Title: Q Magazine's 100 Greatest Singers
Post by: Red1 on March 02, 2007, 10:24:13 AM
In the April 2007 issue of Q magazine they have the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time:

87. Axl Rose - Mad, Bad mouthpiece of Guns N' Roses

An Indiana choirboy turned Los Angeles street lowlife, Axl Rose's complex personality shapes his voice.  At times the Guns N' Roses frontman is a tender romantic, at others a wild-eyed preacher pouring poison in your ear.  His habit of sustaining notes audaciously over the ends of songs suggests a man in love with the act of making noise.  Rose took singing more seriously than might be thought : when Appetite For Destruction reached its first million sales, he sent a bouquet of flowers to his vocal coach.

Key Songs:

Welcome To The Jungle
November Rain
Sweet Child O' Mine
Nightrain
Better*
Think About You
It's So Easy
Patience
You Could Be Mine
Don't Cry
Civil War

*Better isn't really in there  ;D

Yeah no shit....his voice fit the music but he was a TERRIBLE singer....and I like Nirvana. Another magazine to wipe your ass with.......I don't know any other rock singer in the history of time who was invited to sing with more musical legends on stage then Axl Rose. The guy has about 5 or 6 voices and he can truely sing just about anything.

Yeah that list fuckin sucks.

Kurt Cobain is so overrated, and its just cause he died. Fuck that guy.

P.S. Axl has had vocal coaches since the early 90s, maybe even before that.

u can't really argue with the top 4

Sure you can! Aretha Franklin ranks below Elvis in singing ability? And Frank Sinatra is right behind her? Who compiled this list, The Helen Keller Academy for the Deaf and Hopelessly Nostalgic?!

See, that was easy. You just weren't trying hard enough.

Though, in all seriousness, it's pretty terrifying that it's 2007 and yet both Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra are apparently still held in such high esteem.

#87? Axl is overrated. (And that number was obviously picked because AFD was released in 1987, and that makes the magazine look cool)

he should be ranked higher up, but cool read! :)

its so true about the sustaining notes thing tho lol now that i think about it

he is notorious with that shit, especially on the illusions, partly appetite and the twat leak too

edit: not to mention IRS

but i love it ;D

If COBAIN was still alive he wouldn't be on the list..maybe 99th or somethin but his voice sucked.  I can't stand Nirvana, I like the rest of the picks but of couse AXL should have been top 5.  I thought Axl, Mariah Carey, and a few others were the only ones that could reach certain octave ranges?!?!?

Steven Tyler, Micheal Jackson and Axl should've been in the top 10.

I thought Axl, Mariah Carey, and a few others were the only ones that could reach certain octave ranges?!?!?
I don't know about it, but I like his screams and singing voices a lot. I don't know other rock start that could scream like he does in his shows. Welcome to the jungle, knocking on heavens door, live and let die, IRS, Paradise City. By scream I do mean really loud screams. He even could keep drive in the whole 12.20 show, like he did in the past. Oh, yea, and I think that using drive makes harder to reach certain notes.

I don't know any other rock singer in the history of time who was invited to sing with more musical legends on stage then Axl Rose. The guy has about 5 or 6 voices and he can truely sing just about anything.
oh, true, he has about 5 or 6 voices, lol. Most of singers just have 1 (right?). This is a point that makes me consider Axl being in the top 10, 5 or even 3. And he can even reach high notes on all those voices, right? I don't know much about voice though. Is there anyone to confirm me that?  ::)
He uses one voice to madagascar, one to welcome to the jungle, one to sweet child o' mine, one to nightrain, one to november rain, one to Mr. Brownstone... that's what I THINK, at least  ::)

Missing from the top 10:

Freddy Mercury, Axl, Maynard James Keenan, David Lee Roth (don't misjudge his talents as a frontman as overshadowing his vocal range, which is truely impressive and unique)

Axl should be higher than 87, no doubt.

I'd make a case for Glenn Frey of The Eagles to be in the top ten. His voice is incredibly smooth.

Title: Re: Q Magazine's 100 Greatest Singers
Post by: Verasa on March 03, 2007, 10:22:07 AM
any poll that has Kurt Cobain higher than say someone like Christina Aguilerra, who has a 4 1/2 octave range, you can't take seriously. Axl has a wide variety of voices and can get up there but, I don't think he's deserving of top 10

Title: Re: Q Magazine's 100 Greatest Singers
Post by: AxlRose4eva1 on March 03, 2007, 11:02:21 AM
Axl and about 75 of the singers on this list dont even belong in a list title "Greatest Singers."  You kidding me?  Just in rock alone do you really think you could put Axl or Kurt above Mike Patton, Geoff Tate or Tim Christensen when it comes to singing. Like just singing.  Im not talking about frontmen or stage presnce, lyrics or anythign else, but pure singing.  Fact is almost all Opera singers are going to be better than anyone on this list.  Listen to Natalie Dessay and tell me that she couldnt hit any note that these people sing, with ease.  Then even lesser known singers like Beth Hart, who play kinda bluesy rock could blow away any of these people.  This list should obviously be called the most popular singers of the last 50 years, not greatest.

Depending on who you ask, Axl is either great, or sucks. People love or hate his voice.

Now Freddie Mercury? Top 3...And by that I mean top 1.

Kurt? Not bloody likely.

Kurt Cobain was entertaining, but couldn't sing worth a flying fuck

87th?!

HOW?

Lists like that are usually crap. This one proves my point. Who even makes them anyway?

87th. What has the world come to? I guess I wouldn't be so pissed if he hadn't come after Cobain, who as someone has already pointed out, couldn't sing worth a flying fuck. My drunk uncle likes to "sing" all day in his garage and he sounds just like Kurt Cobain, only more hiccuping.

Well, I bet if they had made it like "Top 100 Rock N' Roll Singers" or whatever we'd be much more pleased with the results.

 ??? I'm still in shock though...jeez...

Problem with that is that some people dont like opera.. to one mans ears opera singers have the best voice, but to anothers, guys like Freddie Mercury and Axl Rose have the best voices..

Its all in opinion.. thats yours, i have mine, i choose to hear axl over any opera singer.

To have a list like this without Geoff Tate or Mike Patton is kinda a joke.  What are they basing it off of.  Also for the person who said they dont like Opera, I hate to break it to you but its pretty much the measuring stick that other forms are compared to.  No one has larger ranges or are trained to sing with their head voice the notes that guys like Axl have to belt.  Thats why rock singers and belters voices always are having problems because the belting destroys it.  IF this list is on who can hit the most notes, hold notes longest, stay on key etc... then someone who can sing opera would definitely be at the top.
