Title: Radio Station Asking If They Should Play Songs From CD - Once It's Released!
Post by: neon2002 on February 26, 2007, 09:23:59 AM
Hi all. I live in Toronto which is the biggest city in Canada and the 5th biggest city in North America. The biggest New Rock Station in Toronto 102.1 The Edge ( www.edge.ca ) is debating whether or not they should play New GN'R. I've been trying for years to get this station to play GN'R but to no avail. They usually play more alternative rock but they played Velvet Revolver and have often played old & new Metallica. If we could get them to play new GN'R it could really help GN'R gain some momentum.

This is the article that they have up on their website now:

QUESTION OF THE DAY:
SHOULD WE PLAY GUNS AND ROSES ON THE EDGE?

A new Guns N' Roses song called "Better," described as the first single from the band's long-delayed Chinese Democracy album, briefly surfaced online earlier this week at various web sites. The sites were asked almost immediately by representatives for the group to take it down, although one site, called Hype Machine, was still hosting the song yesterday (Wednesday, February 21st). The voice on the tune is unmistakably that of singer W. Axl Rose, while the music features a heavy dose of electronics and a more pop feel than previous Guns N' Roses tracks.

? A first single from the album has never been officially announced.
? It's less than two weeks until March 6th, when Rose tentatively promised that Chinese Democracy would be released.
? Guns N' Roses will begin a world tour in late April with its first-ever concerts in South Africa.
? It's been 13 years in the making...should we play tunes from this album?
Please help us out, would like like to hear old and new tunes from Guns and Roses or is this a classic rock thing?

Talk to me!

And just to clarify they're NOT asking if they should play Leaked Songs - Only Official songs once Chinese Democracy is released.

If the station doesnt cater to an audience that like GNR and if they are going to approach it like that (questioning whether or not to play it), I think probably most people are going to bash it regardless. ?Also the dj's will probably bash it if they have them. ?If you can stand listening to people complain about it then tell them to play it, at worst itll reach a few open minded people. ?However, I guess I just think people in Canada probably have a lot of preconcieved notions about Axl and regardless of what the first single sounds like they probably already have an opinion on the songs.

I think what a lot of people dont realize is a lot of the music industry is getting people who speak to fans to say that the album is good. The record buying public for the most part are mindless drones. ?Things like this will probably be the biggest hurdle, most of the stations that play GNR now are considered "oldies" stations (at least where im from Columbus, Ohio, bigger cities probably have wider varieties). ?These stations either play the hits from the 80's or 90's or play classic rock or have like the house of hair or other syndicated metal shows. ?The question will be is whether or not these stations that love GNR, play them all the time, will play the new stuff. ?They definitely did not/do not play velvet revolver. ?Im just worried the new GNR will be left out in the cold by radio since they are widely considered an 80's/90's band, and they are making music for and in 2007.

Still i dont think either matters much, not many people still listen to FM radio.

Nobody's begging them to play GNR and it's not a useless thread.

I just sent my comments and told them that most of the shit they do play is crap. With shit bands and music such as 3 days grace, among many others, being played non-stop it'd be nice to hear some real music again.

Here, here... ?

Smarten the fuck up people. ?

We're not begging. This particular station is asking if they should play New GN'R. We all know that the songs that we've heard off of CD are great and the more people that get the chance to hear them the better. (No pun intended)

Love this radio station, play every track that you can get from the new album, I always listen to the Edge when im in Toronto. The more exposure the songs get the more pressure will be put on the management, the label and then in turn the band and the management to release the album

If you're desperate for a follow up, you should care about radio play.

Why wouldn't the Edge play the music?  This is a horribly stupid internet promotion.

Radio is a business.  If the album is a success, and the genre is close to what they usually play, they'll play it.

To even ask the listeners this question is stupid. ?This album will have promotion and set-up just like all albums do before it drops. ?That means that this radio station will be sent a promotional packet along with the single, whatever that song may be. ?At that point, the Program Director of the radio station will decide to add it into the rotation. ?I have worked in the Radio industry, and I can tell you that listener requests do not control the station format. ?It is very controlled, very well programmed in advance, and very influenced by the record labels.

anyway they do play eminem from time to time so who knows what they will do. I mean GnR does have elements of modern music more so than Classic GnR did...and the have members from lots of "alternative" bands....who knows

jsut this station mostly plays billy talent and chilipeppers and killers and my chemical romance and fall out boy and NIN....just they've never really strayed to a hard rock kinda playlist....gnr would be out of place IMO...but i mean the more exposure they get the better i suppose...the average fan of the edge may not like it though :peace:

i don't understand what them playing eminem has anything to do with them not playing gnr.. eminem's good music and so is gnr.. IT'S ALL MUSIC! i say if it sounds good, play it.. if it doesn't, don't.. not listening to certain music because you're limited by "genre" is pretty pathetic in my opinion.

that must be a rarity cu i've never heard them play that stuff...but like i said i dont listent to them often everytime i turn there billy talent is on :hihi: or something similar that makes me wanna poke out my eyes

anyway IMO the more exposure on radio stations the better :peace: although i'm not looking forward to rotations every 20 minutes when the album finally doe s come out :puke:

The music is all pre planned in most cases?  If fans that listen to your station want to hear new GnR they will play it.  Does it not matter how many fans support the band?

yeah but such stations shunning music from certain artists just because the artists don't fit their mold of what genre they should be in is fucking stupid  :hihi:
they call themselves an "alternative" music station... well, here's an alternative to what they USUALLY play and it sounds fucking great! so what's the problem? this is why i fucking hate mainstream media such as the radio  lol

i honestly don't give a shit who plays gnr and who doesn't.. when the album comes out, my car stereo's gonna have a copy of CD playing in it, not the fucking radio, so fuck em lol   : ok:

how many are from this board? Chances are the same fans from here that vote arent gonna listen to this station after the album is out...so then the regular fanbase from 102.1 kicks in then it gets shit reviews. Know what i mean? Every edge listener i know doesnt like GnR....at all...i prolly only know about 10-12 people that listen to that station regularily, but still 0 out of 10 aint very good odds :hihi:

^ maybe if they live in Southwestern ontario but i really doubt someone form England or Sweden or Los Angeles or New york or whatever is gonna turn on a Toronto radio station when they got their own local station to listen to...this album will be played everywhere (at least the first single) :-\

it doesnt really matter to me if the station plays the songs or not...i dont listen to them regularily...and because of that i'm not gonna try to sway their polls by voting. IMO this poll is for the average fan of that station....not a world wide vote... :peace:

Music is subjective, getting into an argument with someone about whose music is bad or good is a waste of time.  No one ever changes their mind.  Emailing a radio station telling them to play GNR because the rest of their music is shit is just going to make it 10x more likely they wont play GNR.  If you wrote something like "love the radio station, love gnr, ive heard leaked tracks and live tracks theyre great, fit in totally" it would actually make a difference.  Yes the programmer gets ultimate say at most stations, but GNR is such a wild card right now I bet a lot of people are going to be confused as to what to do.  If you want to convince people to like GNR tell them you like what they listen to and if you like that youll like GNR too.  I cant listen to Eminem, i dont get why hes popular, but he does something right cause people love him. If I was talking to an Eminem fan id say something like "A lot of the same messages and controversial things eminem talks about, Axl deals with etc..."

Since GNR management has been so out of it (all reports say they have no manager) and Axl's pr has been awful (always the bad guy in the breakup/looks crazy/reports of fat, bald, botoxed etc...), I really believe its going to be upto hardcore fans to sell this album.  That means calling radio stations and telling friends etc... YOull never convince someone to like your music or even give it a shot if youre like "what you like is shit."  As fans we should remain positive and spread this music to others.

Normally I couldnt give a damn about sales, but here any chance of a follow up, any chance of great world tours and bigger concerts.  Also, Axl Rose's entire legacy pretty much rides on this.  He should be considered at least one of the greatest, most influential, groundbreaking front men of all time.  Right now the public generally does not think of Axl like that and if this album bombs (and it will if just fans today buy it) then there will be no follow up, there will be no more tours and we might not see Axl performing again until 2012 for their induction to the hall of fame.

Well I read through most of those replies and most were very positive. The more it gets played the more it'll get heard. That means that it has more of a chance for people to like it. I think every rock station should play the album from start to finish on their stations once its released.

Ok I actually listen to 102.1, and I just sent my comments.

My 2-cents:

The EDGE has always been the biggest fucking trendwhore of a radio station since the 90s. Every trend - Emo, Nu-Metal, etc - has gotten a sick amount of airplay. Why? Because it's new. And I've heard GNR on there ONCE in 15 or so years.

They haven't had a good DJ since George Strombolopolous left to Much Music and now to CBC (the Americans here might remember him as the host of The One on ABC, but nevermind that show, he's actually one of the best music critics/DJs in this country, he was on the FLOOR for GNR in 2002, unlike all the other press monkeys who were up in the press box).

Now GNR is popular with the kids who are going back and discovering the few good albums in their parents CD collection. Great, cuz I actually have hopes for this generation, unlike the late-90s/early 00's which sucked harder then a 2$ Thai whore at quitting time.

So yes, they should play it... that feedback list was surprisingly positive. GNR has put on some killer shows in Canada in the last few years, we pretty much lucked out with what, 9 Canadian shows on the last leg of the tour? The band seems a lot more popular here than in the US... yet in Toronto it's usually only 97.7 (which is actually a southern ontario station and not a toronto station) and 107 that plays them, and then it's usually the old stuff (cept Madagascar has been played on 97.7).

Toronto is a huge market, and 102.1 the edge is a huge promoter of music... i mean.. Ill Scarlett a local band from my hometown of Mississauga has made it pretty big up here because of the radio play stations like the edge provided... all im saying is dont underestimate the power of the radio...

Personally, as long as i like the CD thats all that matters..

:peace:

Last year they said that they were in the Top 10 (in the world) for Radio Staions Listened to Online so you could easily make a case for it being a world wide vote.

Yeah I saw George S. @ that show. I was only a few rows away from him. (I'm not even going to try to spell his last name but he is a cool music guy for sure. Alan Cross is pretty good too)

let the band and their record company do their own promotion. I don't give a shit what radio station plays it, as long as I get to hear it!
