Title: Appetite for Illusions...
Post by: luciano on February 25, 2007, 02:33:36 AM
*****

This seems like an old topic but please note that it does NOT belong in the "If Use Your Illusion was one album (your tracklist)" thread (http://www.heretodaygonetohell.com/board/index.php?topic=24374.0) because this is NOT my list of favorite songs from UYI I & II.

This is my 12-track selection to make an Appetite-like record (Estranged is among my favorites UYI tracks but it doesn't belong in an Appetite-like record. So it is not here).

I followed some "rules" to do this compilation:

1) Every song should sound like they could be on Appetite.

This means:

a) No ballads, "slow" or "soft" songs

Right Next Door to Hell
Dust N' Bones
Live and Let Die
Don't Cry [Original Version]
Perfect Crime
You Ain't the First
Bad Obsession
Back off Bitch
Double Talkin' Jive
November Rain
The Garden

Garden of Eden
Don't Damn Me
Bad Apples
Dead Horse
Coma ?

Civil War
14 Years
Yesterdays
Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Get in the Ring
Shotgun Blues
Breakdown
Pretty Tied Up
Locomotive
So Fine
Estranged

You Could Be Mine
Don't Cry [Alternate Lyrics]
My World

b) All songs must have Axl on lead vocals

Right Next Door to Hell
Dust N' Bones
Live and Let Die
Perfect Crime
Back off Bitch
Double Talkin' Jive *Izzy sings lead vocals here but Axl sings lead vocals too, so it stays!
Garden of Eden
Don't Damn Me
Bad Apples
Dead Horse
Coma ?

Civil War
14 Years
Get in the Ring
Shotgun Blues
Pretty Tied Up
Locomotive
You Could Be Mine
My World

c) Only original GNR songs (i.e. no covers)

Right Next Door to Hell
Live and Let Die
Perfect Crime
Back off Bitch
Double Talkin' Jive
Garden of Eden
Don't Damn Me
Bad Apples
Dead Horse
Coma ?

Civil War
Get in the Ring
Shotgun Blues
Pretty Tied Up
Locomotive
You Could Be Mine
My World

d) No fillers:

Right Next Door to Hell
Perfect Crime
Back off Bitch
Double Talkin' Jive
The Garden
Garden of Eden

Don't Damn Me
Bad Apples
Dead Horse
Coma ?

Civil War
Get in the Ring
Shotgun Blues
Pretty Tied Up
Locomotive
You Could Be Mine
My World

After that, I had these songs left:

Back off Bitch
Double Talkin' Jive
Don't Damn Me
Bad Apples
Dead Horse
Coma ?

Civil War
Get in the Ring
Pretty Tied Up
Locomotive
You Could Be Mine

There are only 11 Appetite-like songs on this list. So I made another rule: ?:hihi:

2) Ain't Going Down needs to be on the album!
The song was recorded during UYI sessions and there is a great studio recording of the song (A quality), so it... fits!

Then I came up with another "rule":

3) The song order must be as similar to Appetite as possible

In order to have that, first I put all the Appetite tracks in this order (from the shortest to the longest):

3:16 - You're Crazy (track #10)
3:21 - It's So Easy (track #02)
3:25 - Anything Goes (track #11)
3:38 - My Michelle (track #07)
3:46 - Mr. Brownstone (track #05)
3:49 - Think About You (track #08)
4:20 - Out Ta Get Me (track #04)
4:26 - Nightrain (track #03)
4:32 - Welcome to the Jungle (track #01)
5:54 - Sweet Child O' Mine (track #9)
6:14 - Rocket Queen (track #12)
6:45 - Paradise City (track #6)

Then I did the same with the Illusion tracks:

3:22 - Double Talkin' Jive
4:18 - Dead Horse
4:28 - Bad Apples
4:46 - Pretty Tied Up
4:56 - Ain't Going Down
5:04 - Back off Bitch
5:19 - Don't Damn Me
5:29 - Get in the Ring
5:48 - You Could Be Mine
7:36 - Civil War
8:42 - Locomotive
10:16 - Coma

How to order the Illusion tracks? Like this: If the shortest track on Appetite is "You're Crazy" (track #10), so the shortest track of the Illusion songs (which is Double Talkin' Jive) will also be track #10 on the Appetite-like record. And doing like this I had the following tracklist:

01. You Could Be Mine 5:48
02. Dead Horse 4:18
03. Get in the Ring 5:29
04. Don't Damn Me 5:19
05. Ain't Going Down 4:56
06. Coma 10:16
07. Pretty Tied Up 4:46
08. Back off Bitch 5:04
09. Civil War 7:36
10. Double Talkin' Jive 3:22
11. Bad Apples 4:28
12. Locomotive 8:42

To make it MORE similar to Appetite, I chose to put the "singles" at the tracks #1, #6 and #9:

01. Back off Bitch 5:04 (This is a "balls-to-the-wall" opener similar to Welcome to the Jungle)
02. Dead Horse 4:18
03. Get in the Ring 5:29
04. Don't Damn Me 5:19
05. Ain't Going Down 4:56
06. Civil War 7:36 (This is an "epic-rocker" similar to Paradise City)
07. Pretty Tied Up 4:46
08. Coma 10:16
09. You Could Be Mine 5:48 (This is a "love-themed" melodic song similar to Sweet Child o' Mine)
10. Double Talkin' Jive 3:22
11. Bad Apples 4:28
12. Locomotive 8:42

To make it even MORE similar to Appetite, I chose to put a fast rocker as track #2:

01. Back off Bitch 5:04
02. Double Talkin' Jive 3:22 (this is a fast-paced track similar to It's so Easy)
03. Get in the Ring 5:29
04. Don't Damn Me 5:19
05. Ain't Going Down 4:56
06. Civil War 7:36
07. Pretty Tied Up 4:46
08. Coma 10:16
09. You Could Be Mine 5:48
10. Dead Horse 4:18
11. Bad Apples 4:28
12. Locomotive 8:42

To make it a little MORE similar to Appetite, I chose to put three "rockers" as track #3, #4 and #5:

01. Back off Bitch 5:04
02. Double Talkin' Jive 3:22
03. Pretty Tied Up 4:46
04. Don't Damn Me 5:19
05. Ain't Going Down 4:56 (these tracks have a similar vibe to "Nightrain", "Outta Get Me" and "Mr. Brownstone")
06. Civil War 7:36
07. Get in the Ring 5:29
08. Coma 10:16
09. You Could Be Mine 5:48
10. Dead Horse 4:18
11. Bad Apples 4:28
12. Locomotive 8:42

I also put the best "long-track" to close the record: Coma.

01. Back off Bitch 5:04
02. Double Talkin' Jive 3:22
03. Pretty Tied Up 4:46
04. Don't Damn Me 5:19
05. Ain't Going Down 4:56
06. Civil War 7:36
07. Get in the Ring 5:29
08. Locomotive 8:42
09. You Could Be Mine 5:48
10. Dead Horse 4:18
11. Bad Apples 4:28
12. Coma 10:16 (this track is just as great as Rocket Queen)

And also made a last minute correction because Locomotive seemed so out of place!? ;D

01. Back off Bitch 5:04
02. Double Talkin' Jive 3:22
03. Pretty Tied Up 4:46
04. Don't Damn Me 5:19
05. Ain't Going Down 4:56
06. Civil War 7:36
07. Get in the Ring 5:29
08. Bad Apples 4:28
09. You Could Be Mine 5:48
10. Locomotive 8:42 (it looks better here, huh?) ?;D
11. Dead Horse 4:18
12. Coma 10:16

And that is it! The final tracklist for the Appetite-like record!

Appetite for Illusions

01. Back off Bitch 5:04
02. Double Talkin' Jive 3:22
03. Pretty Tied Up 4:46
04. Don't Damn Me 5:19
05. Ain't Going Down 4:56
06. Civil War 7:36
07. Get in the Ring 5:29
08. Bad Apples 4:28
09. You Could Be Mine 5:48
10. Locomotive 8:42
11. Dead Horse 4:18
12. Coma 10:16

Hope you like it!

Err... After doing this I realize that no matter how hard you try, you can not duplicate Appetite!?

I can't believe I just read that entire...disturbing exercise. I'm still confused as to how "Civil War" wound up back on the list. If it was all a joke, then  -- if not, then  :nervous:

Damn, those lists are cool, but you've got waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much time on your hands... :hihi:

I can't believe you listed Right Next Door To Hell and Perfect Crime as filler too, cause those are both pretty damn close to AFD style rockers.

Wrong answer.
Axl sings the chorus on Double Talkin' Jive studio version.

You know what?
It is OK to not say anything when you don't know what you are talkin' about.
Try that next time.

I think by crossing off Dust N Bones and 14 Years just because Izzy sang lead, you've shot yourself in the foot.  Izzy sounds very similar to Axl opening it's so easy, and therefore, i think those two songs should be allowed.  Not only that, but they could replace songs like Locomotive, which would clearly NEVER fit on Appetite.  In fact neither locomotive, dead horse and bad apples deserve to be on there.   Appetite was a fantastic fusion of punk and hard rock, and none of those songs fit that description, unlike their orignals (You're Crazy, Anything Goes and Think About You).

Overall though, i gotta agree, can't duplicate appetite as it stands.

Interesting idea...you've put a lot of work into that analysis too!!

The only bit I didnt agree with was your choice of "fillers" as those are very rocky songs to me...and I dont get why no one loves "Shotgun Blues" its cool to me!!

But good list anyways!

"Shotgun Blues" is not one of my favorites either, but I don't hate it!!
