Title: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: Neemo on February 19, 2007, 02:01:28 PM or do you use one at all? maybe your fingers? or a clip from a loaf of bread? a quarter like EVH?
personally i use the grey Jim Dunlop ones....USA Nylon .73mm (I like the dimpled texture helps me hold onto the fucking things :hihi: ) Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: Deez Nuts on February 19, 2007, 09:00:52 PM Don't know any names, but when I first started I used huge flimsy thin ones that were the size of about two thumbs. I wasn't fast enough to use thicker ones, plus the oversized pick helped me hit some notes while strumming that I would have missed with a normal sized.
Then I moved to thin fenders, and now after 4 years, I can't hardly play with anything thinner than a medium. Lately I've been using a "star pick" (has a hole in the middle) that I've gotten to like. I also play alot with my thumb on acoustic. Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: Alan on February 19, 2007, 11:06:41 PM depends on which guitar, i prefer thicker picks for the LP, anything between 1.1m and 1.4m but has to be under 0.8 for acoustics/semi acoustics.

I use heavy no matter what, I have to be able to feel the pick as it hits the string. Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: Genesis on February 20, 2007, 04:19:52 AM Dunlop Tortex 0.71mm mostly. I was thinking of going for thicker (1.4mm) ones later, they're smaller and help pick faster.

I also use a big triangle pick when I play bass, don't know which brand it is though cause it's been wiped off Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: mrlee on February 20, 2007, 08:38:11 AM im a bass player, i like using dunlops, size 2.0mm for bass stuff which has alot of variations, such as guns with duff.
i use dunlops 71 mm for simple driving basslines like ac/dc Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: Johnny Rattlesnake on February 20, 2007, 05:09:30 PM Dunlop Gator Grips!! .71mm or larger. Fresh ones tend not to spin around when I play.
Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: ann2718 on February 20, 2007, 10:45:13 PM I don't yet have a favorite kind of pick; I've gotten a lot of different ones but I still drop them. Any recommendations (for grippier picks)?

Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: MR W,AXL ROSE on February 21, 2007, 06:50:25 AM anyone tried the "Jellyfish" ? what type of sound does it give an is it easy to use.

I've always liked the way they feel and how 'precise' they are. For acoustic something pretty thin and fairly big (in comparison to the jazz pics). Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: Neemo on February 21, 2007, 09:31:14 AM i like the tortex ones too but not as much as the other ones
i've tried so many different ones...the bassones are too chunky :hihi: and a quarter really is hard to use i cant see how eddie does/did that :-\ if i could get a quarter shapedin to the triangle that would be cool :) and i play alot of fingerpicking too...when i picked up bass fora few years it really helped my fingerpicking ability....now i gotta learn to go finger picking to reagular pick seamlessley...my buddy can do it its crazy he curls up his index finger holding the pcik then lets it down when he needs it (if that explains it :-\ ) Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Ive been on the same one for almost a year now. i use the blue ones occasionaly whn i cant find a pruple turtle Same here whenever I can, 1.14 mm, right? I remember reading something that says those were the same size Slash and/or Izzy used. They say thinner ones are good for strumming or for rhythm players, while thicker ones are good for lead playing. 1.14 is right about the median of the two, so it's just a solid all-around pick. Sadly, I only have one pick right now, and it's not a 1.14, but rather a huge-ass Jim Dunlop Stubby; something like 2 or 3 mm. But it works well enough for now. Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: 2112 on February 21, 2007, 04:33:21 PM I use fingerstyle ala Geddy Lee and Billy Sheehan.
But when i sweep, shreed, and play fast arpeggios for fun, I ordinarily use 0,6 mm nylon for best performance. Or sometimes i play mentioned stuff with fingers. Picks are unnecessary to me when it comes to speed. Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: JohnMorrison73 on February 21, 2007, 09:29:04 PM clayton 1.90 rain drops

anyway, i use Dunlop Gator Grips 2.0mm, i just like the feel of them. Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: Verse Chorus Verse on April 09, 2007, 02:54:15 PM Dunlop Tortex .60mms and Dunlop "Harley Davidson" Licensed "Heavy" picks.

Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: Layne Staley's Sunglasses on April 26, 2007, 04:13:21 PM So if you wanna play faster, ya gotta go with a thicker pick?
Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: kever20 on May 01, 2007, 02:36:01 PM Haha... Don't hate me, everyone, but I was on the beach down near Frisco, and I found magnificent shells and seaglass. The shell was actually very triangular, albeit three times the size, and rough on one side while smooth and abalone-rainbow on the other. It plays amazing! There is a bit of metallic composite on the playing side, and it makes the strings buzz and hiss and give it all sorts of cool pitches. The glass is nice too, as it is "unbreakable" due to the rigors of the sea. Makes a unique sound on the strings. Try them... I prefer them over the plastic.
Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: Genesis on May 02, 2007, 06:16:12 AM So if you wanna play faster, ya gotta go with a thicker pick? Yes, you can play faster with a thicker pick. Don't ask me why, but I've always felt they come off the strings quicker than a flexible pick. Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: Oddy on May 02, 2007, 07:49:07 AM you can play faster with thicker picks simply because its a matter of science.
thin picks bend.......so there is a small ammount of time where the pick lags because it is flexing when going a cross the string. thick picks on the other hand are instant since they dont bend. and you can learn to be very precise with them. however.......for good ole accoustic strumming nothing beats those paper like picks. Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: Johnny Rattlesnake on May 02, 2007, 12:44:52 PM I got two from Gilby. One in 1996 and one in 2002.
Both were orange with "Cure Me Or Kill Me" on them. He must have had a shitload made to still be using them. Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: stolat on May 06, 2007, 07:57:14 AM I use my nail on my middle finger, I hold the finger steady with my thumb. As an extension of my hand, it feels more natural. : ok:
Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: manicstreet on May 09, 2007, 09:41:46 AM I use the yellow tortex picks.
When i saw Pearl Jam in 98 Jeff Ament threw a pick and it hit my girlfriend in the head. Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: tiger on May 18, 2007, 03:13:54 PM The yellow Dunlop Tortex .73, why? becuse it's fuckin' great
Title: Re: what kinda guitar pick you use and why? Post by: St_Jimmyuk on May 20, 2007, 06:12:05 PM i mainly use the orange standard dunlop ones (can't remeber the size) as its the one my friend was using when he first got me to play guitar and i like it although my fav is the small purple dunlop although a recently lost it
the best pick i have is a black custom Anthrax one which the band use but i have only ever used it once as the band actually used it and i caught it when thrown out and as its actually got the scrape marks on it from use i don't want to ruin it. its the perfect thickness i think its thin but doesn't feel that thin when using it |
