Title: Guns N' Roses mention in World Magazine
Post by: loretian on February 18, 2007, 12:01:12 AM
I'm guessing not many people here read World magazine, but it's a weekly conservative Christian magazine that usually covers social and political topics.? They also review books and various albums and have a small amount of pop/media type culture coverage.? I do realize that some people might find issue with a conservative Christian magazine writing about Guns N' Roses, but all in all, I think what they write is decent, even if they don't have as much respect for the music as I do (and get some facts wrong).? Keep in mind, this is not a music mag, these reviews are meant for a very different audience that would most likely only be listening to Guns N' Roses on a casual basis.

http://www.worldmag.com/

They reviewed Guns N' Roses Greatest Hits, as well as have a short "Spotlight" article about Axl and Civil War.? The pic of Axl is one from the last (2006) tour.

Review:

Style: Guttersnipe hard rock and heavy metal (circa 1987-1993)

Cautions: None, to the consternation of fans who savor the notorious political incorrectness of the band's non-greatest hits.

Worldview: "The wars go on with brainwashed pride, / for the love of God and our human rights. / And all these things are swept aside / by bloody hands time can't deny" ("Civil War")

Overall quality: A listenable rehabilitation of a band needed one.

Spotlight:
When the Rolling Stones tapped Guns N' Roses to open shows on their Steel Wheels tour in 1989, some critics thought the move a mistake - not because Guns N' Roses (already infamous for public meltdowns) might be too stoned or drunk to perform but because they might upstage the Stones.? They story of why such predictions failed to materalize constitutes one more chapter in the sad history of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll.? It's also a story that Guns N' Roses' Greatest Hits (Geffen) doesn't tell.? Released in 2004 over the band's legal objections, the album collects the group's eight top-40 singles (five of which hit the top five and went gold): covers of songs by Bob Dylan, the Skyliners, and the Stones (the all-too-unironically appropriate "Sympathy for the Devil"); and "Civil War," the social-conscience anthem that Axl Rose composed to counter the bad PR he'd generated with comments that anticipated (and were eventually upstaged by) those of John Rocker.

If it's a negative article that most of us admittedly won't get, why post it? It's a piece of shit.

I didn't find it to be negative.  I didn't think "most of us" wouldn't get it either.  I do find the breakdown of Guns N' Roses in the early 1990's to be sad, and I look forward to the future of Guns N' Roses.

That said, I don't think you'll find many conservative Christian magazines that would review a Guns N' Roses album (or compilation) the way World did, and I also thought that was notable.
