Title: Tommy still gigging with Soul Asylum?
Post by: Bubba St. Rose on February 04, 2007, 01:32:51 AM
Does anyone know if Tommy is still playing live with Soul Asylum? The band is playing a two show gig at a local indian casino here in northern Minnesota on Feb. 16 and Tommy is in the posters. Just wondering if I should check it out.

I don't think Tommy is playing with them but you should still check them out, SA is a great band live.

Either way they are worth seeing, but considering he is friends with Pirner and that is where the Replacements started, there is a chance he will play.

Yeah I know some folks who have seen them in the past few months and Tommy has been at every show.

I've seen them twice and both times Tommy didn't play. If GNR isn't on tour by March atleast I'll get a consolation prize by seeing Tommy with them in orlando.  ;D

Axl already said there's no tour planned.

Not a big deal, some guys can walk and chew gum at the same time.  He played with SA in Summer 06 without missing any GNR shows during their Summer 06 tour in Europe.

I don't think one has anything to do with the other.  And I think the word "currently" is key.

These shows should be fun.  :)

I would not expect a tour to actually start in early 09 if one is not even set up yet.

Also, even if one was, it probably would not be really difficult to work in 2 bands at the same time since it does not appear SA has a handful of shows lined up and not a major tour.

Pirner happy with current Soul Asylum

August 25, 2009

By Gary Graff, Journal Register News Service

It's been three years since its last album and 14 years since its last Top 40 hit, but Dave Pirner is very happy with the state of Soul Asylum these days.

"The whole band is very engaged now," noted Pirner, 45, who co-founded the rock group in 1983 in Minneapolis with guitarist Dan Murphy. "That hasn't always been the case. Now, we end up having arguments about the set list, really yelling at each other. Creative arguments.

"That is an indication, to me, that people in the band really (care). Why that hasn't always been that way, I don't know. But it's very inspiring to know people care that much to argue about it. It's natural and good."

Pirner credits Soul Asylum's current makeup ? he and Murphy joined by former Prince drummer Michael Bland and bassist Tommy Stinson (the Replacements, Guns 'N Roses), who replaced the late Karl Mueller in 2005 ? with this new level of commitment. Now he hopes to put together a follow-up to 2006's "The Silver Lining," with the group slated to come to Pirner's home studio in New Orleans to explore the possibilities.

"I just start writing and start compiling (stuff) and throwing stuff against the wall and see what sticks to the band members," Pirner said. "That's always been a fascinating process, but it's just a little different now.

"The main thing is (Bland). I didn't really want to have a band unless I had a good drummer. When Michael auditioned, it took five minutes and I was like, 'Holy ... let's make a record!' Now I gotta make another one, 'cause I've got a great drummer."

Tommy just played with Soul Asylum here in Detroit last Thursday. I really wanted to go but had other plans I couldn't skip out on so I missed it.

I could care less about Soul Asylum but I wanted to go just to see Tommy like I did with nin earlier this year just to see Robin.

I could care less about Soul Asylum but I wanted to go just to see Tommy like I did with nin earlier this year just to see Robin.

I have to say, I like some of their stuff more than I thought I would.  Another recent quote from Dave Pirner regarding Tommy -- from the Flint press.

Part of that rock 'n' roll attitude is achieved with the help of ex-Replacements/Guns 'N Roses bassist Tommy Stinson.

"He brings a whole lot of attitude," Pirner said. "He brings a lot of rock 'n' roll magic. Whenever I talk about Tommy it sounds corny. But he is just this naturally gifted guy, fella, that just feeds the music. He kind of lives it. It's what he's done his entire life. He's very instinctual and very enthusiastic and very critical and very fun. I love playing with Tommy. Hopefully it will be the best thing that it can be."

Stinson, like Pirner, grew up in the Minneapolis music scene. Stinson, who joined The Replacements at age 12 in 1979, replaced original Soul Asylum bassist Karl Mueller, who was diagnosed with and died from esophageal cancer.

"We certainly knew each other when we were very young," Pirner said of his relationship with Stinson. "We came up together. He's a little younger than me. But when the Replacements and Soul Asylum were out playing together that was a long, long, long time ago. He was too young to get into a bar. We've certainly known each other forever. But you know when you're in bands always on the road, you see each other all the time. It almost feels belated playing with him. But there's other things he's been doing."

What happened to Tommy's website ?

This is what makes Robin's situation more interesting, Tommy tours with SA but theres no worry about his status in the band. ( i know its off topic)
