Monday, November 6, 2006 - Harley-Davidson Press Release

Guns N' Roses has licensed music to Harley-Davidson for a new television commercial, "Black Sheep." The commercial was shot in black and white and shows black sheep of various herds escaping and running wild while the Guns N' Roses hit, "Paradise City" plays in the background. At the end of the commercial, the black sheep end up at a Harley-Davidson motorcycle rally. This marks the first time Guns N' Roses has agreed to license one of their songs for a commercial.

The "Black Sheep" commercial, featuring "Paradise City," will air during Busch Grand National and Nextel Cup Races October 8 through November 19. An alternative version, launching early November, premieres the new, exclusive, unreleased Guns N' Roses track "Better" from their new album, "Chinese Democracy," which will be released later this year.

Well, if Paradise City is on the advert until the 19th.... I guess that makes the release of the album or possibly the single on the 21st all the more likely.

If the album does drop this year it'll be the last tuesday of the year (or maybe the second last so it's out before xmas) and the single should be dropping around the end of November with the commercial.

Chinese Democracy starts Late November / Early December? ?Hopefully. 8)

I believe if the album is to come out this year, people will want it to be out there before christmas. And this is certainly a step to the right direction.

Very good news IMO. ?I bet Harley Davidson had to get permission from GNR to isse that press release (or at least have a locked contract to use Better in November). ?This is welcome news after a less than perfect last few days.

Also, it seems to give credibility to the Nov. 21st rumors for at least something to happen.

i think its? possible for the official premiere/release of this commercial featuring "better" to be in conjunction with a single release of "better" and promotion for the album which is still coming out this year, but in december now. heres to hoping.

Maybe they will not release the single and release the album Nov. 21st?

It's a shame they made two versions of the commercial... the Paradise City one seems much more appropriate and suited to the commercial.  If only one version was made with Better as the music, we couldn't compare.

kind of makes me think the album got delayed a few weeks, so the ad with Better was also delayed the same amount of time - but HD had their own plans to show the commercial at various times and so the PC was shown instead.

My husband say the PC version of the commercial three times on Sunday during the NASCAR race. Having the press release being "official" now gets my hopes up.

I also love the video but people seem to understand it. Hell my mom said it was a very well made commercial and got the point across very well, and hell nothing against my mom but she can be a little slow at times.

It's not like GNR does this often.. and its not some lame cell phone commercial.

People will always find something to complain about with this band though. This is good publicity.

i think its a smart move to draw the casual people in with using PC first.... those people will remember that they love GNR instantly by hearing PC. when the new single hits, they'll give it more of a chance.

I think most people will like "Better", but I think they should play the intro thru the verse and pre-chorus....i didn't like the edit of the song in the commercial when i saw it online a week or ago. the intro, verse....F-CKIN SLAM!!! When Axl first comes in "The hardest part.." is just magic.

Another magical part for me is in the 2nd verse, when the "No one ever told me when....." comes back. Amazing. Id leave the outro out of the commercial. Its cool, but its meant to be heard at the END, not as a main sell of the song.

Whatever...doesn't matter......if they actually DO some heavy promo, Axl and GNR will rule the music world again. And it will all be totally legit.

Will it play on every station I'm assuming or just certain ones?  The press release also says EARLY November...and it's already the 7th?!?! So I'm guessing any day now we'll see the commercial just pop up right?

at this point.....who the hell knows whats going to happen. just enjoy this craziness, day-to-day.

I'm gonna go back and read the press release a little more carefully.  See if it actually mentions stations it will play on....which I'm pretty sure it doesn't.  I'm just hoping ESPN, MTV, VH1, etc...stations that are actually being watched would be nice.

The ad is cool. It will go well with better as well. it may be even better if they make a new film for the ad with better.

Better works better with commercial than PC.

PC doesn't work at all on it...

I also feel that PC is a bit too "uptempo" for the setting of the commercial.  When "Better" was played in the background though, it all seemed to flow alittle more smoothly.

Call me crazy, but wouldn't it have been cool if Axl comes out of a bar in the town with all the "black sheep" gathered around, jumps on a Harley and rolls out of town. Just have Axl wearing some jeans, biker boots, sporting a goatee, shirt sleeves cut off flashing the tats. Axl is kind of the "black sheep" of rock and roll. The commercial stays the same with Axl coming out at the end. ;D

A single is coming soon, you dont need weeks of promotion for that.

it's really quiet about the album right now.

If better isn't going to be a single (I believe it will be BTW), then it may be the basis of a soundtrack promoting CD on TV.  The die-hards know the song, but how many % of joe public will be sure that it's GnR  ???

All things being good,, it will be both a single and a song on a promotional soundtrack

Axl has one of the most distinguishable voices from anybody.. I find it very hard to believe that even the most novice of joe public will not know they're listening to Guns N' Roses..

I just heard a rumor (but don't know how reliable it is...so the mods can feel free to delete this post) that the Better version of the Harley ad should be up and running for the Thanksgiving Football games.

That's only two days after Nov. 21st, which is the date everyone is speculating something will happen.

But the actual press release said 'early November'. 

As for it being 'up and running' by Thanksgiving, what's to get up and running?  The ad's already ready!  Put it on already!

"Should be up and running by" doesn't necessarily mean "will premiere on".

I'm not sure about when it will premiere.  The rumor is that harley has bought ad space during the Thanksgiving football games and will be showing the Better version of the Black Sheep ad....not that that will be the premiere of the ad.

they aired on the net the comercial with BETTER, then changed for PC... but, how they got Better from the label? because they changed to PC so fast that just make me think that the album ( or the single BETTER ) WERE supossed to be released to promote the band, and something happened... 

so, why GNR label will give the NEW song to the comercial without a MKT plan for an single / album ?

And also a little odd that new music will be "introduced" to many before a single or album is actually released through conventional channels.  Unless, of course, the "Better" version hits at same time as the album...

The word "single" is not mentioned on HD site. It is written "new song".

I'm referring to something different. I believe the text I'm looking at is from the first iteration of the web site, before it was changed to Paradise City. The text I'm looking at is still in the web's HTML source, only has been since commented out. It was part of the "Send this to your friend" JavaScript function, which would send an e-mail to an address you entered.

It may be a stretch but I think that the Harley Davidson ad may be shown during the superbowl. I mean think about it. Great hype for the band and album and the first single off the album would be close to being released. I think it could happen. Thoughts?
