I never really paid attention to it. The main thing that caught my attention was that the 2nd-half is redone.

Axl: When we had a show (on the Illusion tour) Izzy came on stage and set his amp. Then when he turned his back and faced the crowd one of the roadies would run and turn the amp down again. We had to do this because Izzy was so fucked up that he would be playing a different song than the rest of us sometimes.

Could be an explanation.

haha that's hilarious!  :hihi:
id always imagined izzy as the more sensible, less-fucked-up than the others, guess not then!

It wouldn't be the explanation.. I mean, why the fuck did they put a version on Live Era with only Slash?

But yeah, there is only one guitar. It's odd. It's the only song (even Estranged had) on this album with only one guitar track. And it's one of the best Izzy's work on rhythm guitar on AFD. Really, I can't listen to this version because of this... It's a shame.

Where's that quote from?  It's weird, cos that would then fit in with what I read here (http://www.gnrsource.com/articles/2006/10-blues.htm);
Specifically
Quote
Izzy was tired of the band, because he wasn't sure if the crowd could hear his guitar parts when they played live. He couldn't hear his guitar parts on the "Use Your Illusion" records either: "On the last record I wasn't around for the mixes, and when they finished them you really don't hear my guitar at all. It was just a big Les Paul through a Marshall sound on most of the songs. Live, it got to the point where I didn't even know if the audience could hear my guitar."

But....wasn't Izzy clean for the Illusion tour?  So does he mean fucked like pissed off or what?

It doesn't suprise me izzy is not on there or was taken out.  look at the sleeves on the UYI albums. Izzy doesn't even play on alot of the songs at all. like Civil War, Shotgun Blues or Locomotive. Not that I approve of him not being on there, But it doesn't surprise me.

Besides a good bit of the songs on "live Era" was re-recorded anyway. As we all know.

Alot of Izzy's stuff was replaced. Alot of the songs have Slash on both lead & rhythm.

thats what I said.... No Izzy   :P

If I recall, Axl said that shit at the show I was at in Boston 2002.. I know he was talking shit about Izzy for no apparent reason.

Its very true. and if u take a listen to old GNR concerts even with gibly Slash usually dominates the band. you can barely if at all hear the rythem playing of izzy and gilby they are so low in the mix its not even funny. u can most notice it in solos when Slash stops playing the chords and goes into lead. You expecting to hear the rythem strong in the mix like on the albums but you can pick up slash's lead and drums and bass but rythem guitar is no wheres to be found.

interesting theory. i never heard that. it may be possible.
I also read that Izzy's only lead on gn'r album is at the begining of "back off bitch". Because slash said he couldn't do it consisantly.

But where was this version of RQ played anyway? www.gnrontour.com says it was Las Vegas, 1.25.92, but I don't believe it's true. I think it was originally taken from a 1991 show, maybe from the later part with Gilby. Don't know about the intro though. Duff used to say that kind of stuff in the late '91 and early '92 so it's hard to say. I also believe that some of the songs on Live Era are collected from two different versions.. + re-recordings. Listen to Mr. Browstone for example.

I heard it was Vegas '92, with a redone Robin Finck guitar on the end.

that's just writing credits, not playing.

That wouldn't suprise me massively.  I remember reading that Slash wasn't happy about working with a rhythm guitarist, so it would make sense that as Izzy started to give less and less of a fuck, and slash more or less assumed the role of 2IC he would muscle out Izzy/Gilby.

But Slash also said he loved to work with Gilby. And I don't know about you guys but I can easily hear Izzy/Gilby playing on bootlegs. But this Rocket Queen version from Live Era is a whole different thing. But I don't know, there's so much other things on the album bothering me :P
