Title: Was Axl ever sued over "Get In The Ring" and the people mentioned?
Post by: W 23 AXL II on January 05, 2007, 12:59:48 AM
And if not, why didn't they ever sue?? Axl mentions people by name, magazines by name.....

Probably because it wasn't worth it.

There were grounds, because he attacked their character. But it was probably because Get In The Ring didn't get as much exposure as other songs, because it was never released as a single.

The issue of whether there were grounds or not; moreover, whether any slights were damaging enough to warrant reparations, is debatable.  The only thing Axl was guilty of was calling out certain journalists for printing, what Axl and the rest of the band perceived, fabrications and lies.  In order for such journalists to win a lawsuit based on slander, they would have to prove that what they printed was indeed fact.  Considering no such lawsuits were made, one could assume that none of said journalists were too confident in proving the validity of what they wrote about Guns N' Roses was 100% accurate.  Furthermore, the fact that Axl says "bands" also gives his lawyers legal outs as they'd simply have to point to instances when any of such journalists misrepresented any band, not just Guns N' Roses.  To win a slander case, you have to prove that your character was unjustly attacked and damaged.  Nothing in Get in The Ring goes beyond anything that would be considered skin deep afflictions.

Cheers,

Andrew

The song was never performed live. They cut in the studio, then layed over an audience sound.

How did they get that "get in the ring" chant then? You cant just let the crowd yell that for no reason..

Yah, this was never performed live, was it?
Genius song though.. makes me laugh each time.
It's how all the artists feel when lies are printed about them.. Axl just had the balls to get it out there.

Can't remember what show, but Gn'R had the crowd chant "get in the ring" until they had enough to put in the beginning of the song.  It was obviously before the UYIs came out.

Okay, that's probably the answer to the best GNR trivia question I've heard in a long time.
GITR's chant...what show?  Saratoga Springs, NY  1991.  Very cool.  To those who were there:

I have the show on video.

Axl tells the crowd that they recorded a new song the night before and that they want the crowd to chant "Get in the Ring" so it can be on the record. Axl thought they didnt get it on tape so they were gonna do it again, but they got it.

Then he goes on to joke a little bit saying something along the lines of "If you didnt chant dont go around telling your friends your on the Guns N' Roses record."

Something like that happened. I havent watched the show in a while, so I dont remember it exactly.

That was a good show, great setlist. Dead Horse was played.
Axl also joked about Poison breaking up that day, saying it was a sad day. But really sarcastically with a huge smile.

used to flash in the lights or in the screens at their shows?
The crowd would chant along easily every time.

I believe the song was recorded in Toronto, and the chanting part was mixed during at a later date.  I always get confused between Get and the Ring and Back off Bitch, as I know Toronto was the only time they performed Back off Bitch and it was in Toronto they recoreded Get in The Ring.

Cheers,

Andrew

Uuuhhh, freedom of speech? Just  because  one  says something negative does not mean one will be sued. Not yet anyway.

It was played a handful of times, but was typically a rare song. Many, many... no.

yes slander and defamation charges are very hard to prove in the US. easier to sue over them in the UK and Europe. so if they wanted to they could try to take them to court there with better chances of success, but i guess they never bothered.

funny fact:

Guccione (a nine year karate student) actually responded in a letter to Axl Rose, saying that he accepted the challenge. However, no fight ever occurred.

(haha..so it wasn't THAT serious ;))

I remember reading in an interview somewhere where Axl explained the song, saying that it wasn't about a physical fight (such as a boxing match). It was a challenge to their critics to "get in the ring" with GNR so to speak, and start their own band, make their own album, and prove that they could do better than them.
