no, theres been no announcement, its a stupid move, Axl wouldn't approve of it, he made that clear in his letter.

well, if march 6 is the target release date, then i'm sure we'll hear something soon as far as a single or whatever

Although releasing Madagascar as a single around MLK day would be cool seeing how his legendary "I Have A Dream" speech is in the song.

It would be very cool, but I don't think it's going down just yet.  I'm hopeful for something within the first 5 weeks of the new year.  If the album is on schedule for early March, mid-January through mid-February is prime single time.  Keep those fingers crossed.

Also, I think Madagascar is a great track and would make a very good single...just not a good FIRST single.  Something harder, followed by Maddy or The Blues as a second single.  If there's one thing we know, it's that GNR can get a LOT of singles off the albums.  The Illusions had around 8, by my count, not to mention songs that GNR is famous for that weren't singles (KOHD...wasn't a single, was it?).  I'd count on four to five good singles from this album. 

Don't worry you will get your chance in the future , the mlk interlude is very powerful.

Are singles even... that much of the musical business model anymore? Especially in harder rock?

MTV doesn't play videos anymore... MTV-TWO doesn't play videos anymore... you go to a record store, the singles section is shrinking and mostly just dance music and some rap... I mean, does it even make sense? While the album is still viable, if you want just the one song, you just download the song.

You can even do that LEGALLY, these days, if you're one of the ten Boy Scouts out there who does it that way.

"Chinese Democracy" is gonna sell or not sell on the strength of how many people still believe in Axl Rose's ability to make a good album... not on a single or a video or over-the-air radio play or anything like that.  It'd be the first GNR album in fifteen years, that'll make its own press once it's actually on its way to stores...

Press, word of mouth, touring and pent-up desire for a new album'll be what sells or doesn't sell the album.

As much as I'd like to drop six bucks at a record shop for a new GNR single, too, for the purposes of that album in this media climate, it'd be largely a vanity thing on the memory of getting the UYI singles back when the single still made sense as a marketing tool that could also turn a buck.

You make some good points.  When I say "single," I don't necessarily mean something you go out and buy, as much as an early song released to radio and/or tv.  I DO think a strong single is a good marketing tool.  It reinforces the belief in Axl's ability to make a good album.  A shitty first single and we all say, "I waited a decade for THIS!" 
 
I wouldn't buy a single, either.  I'll buy the album, so have no need for a single on disc, unless it had a REALLY cool b-side.

To be highly optimistic... I would say that the single should come out no earlier than January 15th, and no later than February 7th.

the single will probably be released either 1 week or 2 weeks before the album is released, to generate hype for the album.

the world is not limited only to intetrnet...
it takes more than a week to make the news go around the world, especially when diferent broadcasting stations need to get the audio/video.
single cant be released only 1-2 weeks before the album.
bands usually release it months in advance...
Depeche mode released their single 3 months before "playing the angel"...

so we should get the single no later than feb.6th if the march 6th date is still standing.

There are Many ways to promote a release, Magazine Interviews, Paid for adverts, Radio Stations playing the forthcoming single. IMO releasing a single to the public 5 weeks before the album is actually released is not a good idea.

Just put it up online, either for free or for a fair prize. One song. Everyone gets to it easily. Who the fuck goes to a record store anymore anyway.

If it's honestly March 6th, 2007...than I would anticipate a single around the last week of January, or by the first week of February at the latest.

I personally think the best move that could be made is to just post a song and then a live performance of the same song on their website.  Then send it out to all the good online mags.  But I would just be happy with a song showin up on their website with an official release date for the album.

As horrendous as the bulk of modern music videos are, a brand new Gn'R music video with all 8 members featured would kick so much ass : ok:

A music video would rock, I can't even imagine what the video will be like. I can't even imagine what the album art and the singles are going to look like, I'm eager to find that out.

A single should typically precede the album anywhere from two weeks to a month or so.  Until the album is finished - as in handed off to the label - I can't see a single being released.  When it is, though, make no mistake - the album is on its way...

digital age or no, why wouldn't it be needed? its a source of promotion for the album.

I think so. ?Hell, the single is more important than the album these days. ?iTunes thrives on single song sales, and it's usually the "single" that has video/radio/satellite support that sells the most. ?As a result, album / CD sales are down, while single songs continue to rise...if anything, it's the single that will bring more people to the whole album.

I agree. A lot of kids and people in general would be attracted to buy the album from a single, and more so a video. Videos makes people excited about a band, so GNR needs one for sure.

Korn years and years ago had an amazing video for a single of their's called "Somebody Someone" where it was the band rocking out in an underground parking garage, while the whole video was filmed from the point of view of a fly buzzing around amongst the band members and their instruments.

As simplistic as that sounds, the closeups of the band shot from the point of view of the fly are really amazing, and the whole video is truly unique.

In any case, I think the first video in support of Chinese' will have the biggest budget, and therefore might be shot outside, on location somewhere, versus in a studio :peace:

Once the single has been released, we are truly a hair's breadth away from the album ;)

That video is exactly how i imagine a new Guns video, in that type of setting. I always imagine hearing the opening riff to better.

And they'll have one, I'm sure, if not a full-fledged DVD release.  God knows they've been doing a tremendous amount of filming since the tour kicked off in NYC...

theres going to be a video without a doubt, Axl said in his letter that filming a video is one of the reasons for cancelling the January dates. I predict a late january/early Febuary date for the single.

Yeah, a single should appear by late February, or we can start to worry again. And, before anyone gets their panties in a knot, I'm not talking about a traditional single. I'm talking about a song of any kind being released to radio.

Judging from Axl's letter, I don't forsee a whole lot of "mystery" or secrecy in regards to the album.  When it's done, there will be a single and the release will be heavily promoted.  No more guessing games (please, dear God...)

I don't think we'll see a single until around mid-February. The album is on a tight schedule, and they'll be pushing to get it out by March, 6. They probably won't be certain that it's actually going to come out until just a few weeks beforehand. There's no way there going to release a single when the album date is not set in stone. Weren't they still trying for a 2006 release as late as late November. Well, they didn't put a single out; so don't expect them to do it this time more than a month before release.

I have to agree with you.  I hope it is not just wishful thinking. :yes:  Once things get started... it will be very exciting.


 

I agree. The whole secrecy thing never made much sense. Why would the record company, whose sunk tons of money in this, let it have a limited-publicity release?

They won't, it'll be heavily marketed, and if you don't see the marketing train start, it means it isn't coming out soon.

I would hope there would be a single, I saw some posts that said the single might not be necessary.  I definitely think it is, no doubt MTV doesn't play many vids anymore but there are other music channels such as Fuse, MTV2 and even VH1[certain blocks] that airs videos still.  Plus the radio stations and Itunes and also satallite radio now.   I would hope to see a single by mid Feb at least and if the release date truly is March 6th, then it would be before mid Feb hopefully.   I would also expect to see GNR everywhere you can imagine.    I think they should do shows on Fuse like Uranium also maybe even do a spot on Leno or Letterman as well as some of the music awards shows this year...they SHOULD be a force to be reckoned with come 2007 and the release of CD and take the music seen by storm be everywhere. :yes:   but it should all start with a single and a video.

Id think its a bit soon for a single...They cancelled there tour dates in early Jan to finish the album..so my guess would be the single out about 2 weeks befor the album is due to help promote the CD.. :peace:
