Title: Toys of the 80's Post by: bazgnr on December 29, 2006, 07:29:31 PM Okay, this thread needed to happen.? There's entirely too much going on in the Transformers Trailer thread, and the spill over needs to happen somewhere.? I'm having a blast re-living some of my childhood in terms of toys (also in awe of Izzy's knowledge of M.A.S.K.), cartoons, etc.? Time to throw out some random topics and see what everyone has to say & talk about.? Other than Transformers, here's bits and pieces that I remember:
G.I. Joe Captain Power Visionaries M.A.S.K. Thundercats Voltron (lion version and vehicle version) C.O.P.S. Robotix Robotech SuperPowers Masters of the Universe Inhumanoids (The evil that lies within!) Anything to add to the list?? What are your 80's favorites in terms of cartoons, action figures, etc.? Title: Re: Toys of the 80's Post by: Lisa on December 29, 2006, 08:53:13 PM I played with boys not toys in the 80's ;D

Title: Re: Toys of the 80's Post by: lennonisgod on December 29, 2006, 10:13:44 PM Hmmmmm... my top toys when I was growing up were G.I. Joe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, He-Man, Star Wars, Transformers and.... I'm forgetting something I think.
Does anyone else remember Muscle Men?? Those little wrestling guys that were kind of like flesh colored and then they started coming in like blue and red. I think they came in a little plastic trash can??? They had a ton of different characters... I loved those fucking things. Marvel action figures started coming out probably two or so years before I was done playing with toys. I had all every Marvel character that there was!! I remember those battles well... Oh shit, the memories!!! http://www.normandcompany.com/LINKS_PAGE/muscle_men.html Check that link out... Title: Re: Toys of the 80's Post by: bazgnr on December 29, 2006, 11:05:04 PM I liked Care Bears.? I didn't see much of the cartoon, but I loved the stuffed animals. Wow. Care Bears. Title: Re: Toys of the 80's Post by: jabba2 on December 30, 2006, 04:24:32 PM I had a big transformer collection. pretty much any toy of the 80's i either had or wanted it. One christmas there was lots of tiny astronaut action figures with magnets on their feet and you could buy spaceships and control centers for them to stay in. Also laser tag, only played with it on christmas day. That was a toy that gave you a workout and had laser range within 10 feet. No thanks. But it sticks out in my memory that we went outside on Christmas playing with it.

I almost had every TMNT toy as well, but never got Krain(?) or Shredder. Teddy Ruxbin and Grubby were definitely my favorite toys. I actually bought two working Teddy and Grubby toys off of Ebay. Damn I miss the 80s and childhood innocence.

I had a few assorted figures here and there from other series/movies, but HE-Man was where it was at for me. Title: Re: Toys of the 80's Post by: bazgnr on December 30, 2006, 10:01:53 PM He-Man was huge for me, too. That and G.I. Joe's. Zartan with his changing colors blew my mind at the time.
And then the girls had Jem and the Holograms... I still have Castle Greyskull stashed somewhere, but not Snake Mountain because my mom gave it away to one of my cousins (because I was 'too old' to play with them anymore, hah, like that'll happen). I'm still bitter about that. The Finnish National Museum is actually looking for people who would donate them Masters of the Universe action figures (for the category "popular toys in the 80s"), but I don't want to just give them away... They're MINE, MINE I tell you!!! They're MINE, MINE I tell you!!! Was Snake Mountain that huge fucking thing that had like the track that went around it, that some little vehicle went around on?? I remember I got this thing for Christmas when I was little and I still have the pictures, but this thing was HUGE!!! It was probably 4 feet wide or something crazy. Which one had the little rubber hand puppet type monster that you could put on your hand and make it come out of a hole? I think the monster was green?? Was that Castle Greyskull?? I still have all of my He-man toys up in the attic. How about Moss Man?? Now that was innovative for it's time!!! EDIT: By the way, my favorite GI Joe toys were Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, Serpentor (Dressed like a snake), Croc Master, Golobulus (red eye patch, bottom half of body was a serpent), Hydro Viper, ROAD PIG (Big fucking dude with white hair\flat top!!!), SUPER TROOPER!!, Destro (Gold Head), Backblast, ALLEY VIPER, Gnawgahyde (bad guy with the warthog)!!!!! GO TO THIS SITE FOR GI JOE TOYS BY YEAR TO BRING BACK SOME MEMORIES!!!!!!! http://joes.propadeutic.com/1989.html I went through 3 or 4 years and picked my favorites from when I was a kid because there is no way I would remember any of their names except probably Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow and Road Pig. I think 1987-1989 had the coolest Joe's from when I still played with them. Really anyone after 1989 that came out I hardly remember at all. Holy SHIT!!! I forgot they had The Fridge as a GI Joe as well!!! WTF!!!??? You load the game file inside the rom emulator, which is basically a program that plays the game. I used to play Pirates Gold on genesis alot. That game sells on ebay for $40 sometimes.

There was a comic book and action figures for that one as well. Two princes battling for power, one turned to crystal, the other to magma/lava of some kind. Can't forget one of my favorites...SuperPowers! I swear I had every single one, except for Cyborg, which I never sent away for. Firestorm, Darkseid, Hawkman...the list goes on. I have some of the comics too - somewhere - they were always better than the cartoon if i remember. Saw a a few episodes of it a while back, so gloriously 80's..... I tended to focus on just a few ranges of toys back then - so have loads of things like mask and transformers but everything else seems to have passed me by ...they just dont make 'em like they used to, a child of the 90's with all their computer game shenanigans will never know our joy :hihi: Title: Re: Toys of the 80's Post by: Izzy on January 03, 2007, 08:59:42 AM I that case he was highly AFA graded, so then 3k is possible, yeah. indeed it was, how it had avoided the ravages of time i can only guess Its always amazing when sealed items from over 20 years turn up on ebay with barely a mark on them, you'd have thought there would be nothing left in that condition.. I think Browning is a far superior model to megatron, wasnt there a third 'gun' transformer....i cant remember Title: Re: Toys of the 80's Post by: pilferk on January 03, 2007, 09:18:39 AM there is also a gold (or is it silver?) version kicking about too, not sure if that would be more or less valuable. But I seem to remember a huge canon type gun that transformed, too. Maybe part of the autobot base? Can't remember.... The first proto pics kick ass. http://tformers.com/ig.php?mode=view&album=6907&pic=CIMG6596.JPG&dispsize=800&start=0 And I still have a lot MISB in nearly C-9,5+ condition. I pictured some earlier in the thread. I still have a nearly C-10 Silverbolt and a Springer. And I recently sold a C-9 Insecticon Kickback from 1984 on eBay. There are still lots of them out there. The thiird gunformer was Shockwave. /lastroots Title: Re: Toys of the 80's Post by: Izzy on January 03, 2007, 02:45:15 PM I'm looking forward to Masterpiece Megatron. In jet mode you'd never even know it was a transformer... Quote The thiird gunformer was Shockwave. I was thinking more of a 'earth form gun', maybe i dreamt it... Title: Re: Toys of the 80's Post by: bazgnr on January 03, 2007, 03:50:39 PM Was Snake Mountain that huge fucking thing that had like the track that went around it, that some little vehicle went around on??? I remember I got this thing for Christmas when I was little and I still have the pictures, but this thing was HUGE!!! It was probably 4 feet wide or something crazy. No I believe that was Eternia, the entire city. As far as I remember, there were three seperate buildings there, and though one of them was snake-like, it wasn't actually Snake Mountain. Snake Mountain was the purple piece of rock where Skeletor lived! It even had a microphone that altered your voice to sound like Skeletor's :D Which one had the little rubber hand puppet type monster that you could put on your hand and make it come out of a hole? I think the monster was green?? Was that Castle Greyskull?? I don't think so... Maybe you're talking about Hordak's place? I think it had some kind of cave. Wasn't there a MoTU toy where you put your hand into a glove that served as the "legs" of a giant crab/lobster creature that the figures sat on? You squeezed a trigger underneath the body and the claws would close? Or am I confusing this with a toy from another line? Title: Re: Toys of the 80's Post by: bazgnr on January 03, 2007, 03:52:23 PM That's it.? I'm officially heading back to my parents house to dig through all my toys and see what I still? have out there. Whereas my brother managed to destroy every toy he was ever given, i was always careful with my toys and so the ones that ebay hasn't claimed from me are all lurking about the place in pretty decent condition. I resisted selling my MASK figures on ebay when i had a purge a few years back - not ready to completely let go of my childhood! Quote I can't believe you KNOW what M.A.S.K. stood for...I still have the comic books as well. I can best that! Venom stands for: Vicious evil network of mayhem I have no idea how i remember that when i cant even remember the one thing i go to the shops to buy.... I have some of the comics too - somewhere - they were always better than the cartoon if i remember. Saw a a few episodes of it a while back, so gloriously 80's..... I tended to focus on just a few ranges of toys back then - so have loads of things like mask and transformers but everything else seems to have passed me by ...they just dont make 'em like they used to, a child of the 90's with all their computer game shenanigans will never know our joy :hihi: You got that right. The hours I spent with all those toys...sheesh. I'm gonna have to see if I can find a question that will stump you. I'm in awe of your insane 80's toy knowledge, and I say that with the utmost respect, of course. :hihi: Title: Re: Toys of the 80's Post by: bazgnr on January 03, 2007, 10:23:12 PM And let's not forget a true 80s staple, one that consumed many an afternoon, and the closest I've ever come to watching what could be considered a soap opera...Robotech!
Ah, Min-Mei. Title: Re: Toys of the 80's Post by: Izzy on January 04, 2007, 08:52:31 AM You got that right.? The hours I spent with all those toys...sheesh.?
