Blah, covers are horrible....None of those hold a candle to the originals.

Covers I can tolerate though are:
Last Kiss - Pearl Jam
LALD - GNR
Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime - Beck
Waterloo Sunset - David Bowie (It's far too overproduced, but it has a nice little different ting to it than the Kink's version.)

Jimi Hendrix - All along the watchtower (Dylan)- has to be the greatest example of the superior cover

GNR - Sympathy for the devil (Stones), really runs the original ragged

Type O neative - Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young) - so so much better

Prince wrote Nothing Compares 2 U but hadnt put it on an album when Sinead did it, so technically he just wrote a song for her to perform, He did perform it later though.

I also heard Limp's Behind Blue Eyes before the original and no He doesnt rap in it at all, he has a little computerized glitch voice spelling out L I M P  instead of the guitar solo.

I just like Limp's version,it speaks to me more and I feel more emotion on it. Im just not a "Who" Fan...........

Some more Covers.

John Frusciante "For Emily Whenver I may Find Her" *SimonandGarfunkel*

Prince "I cant Make you Love me"  (Bonnie Raitt)

Prince "One Of Us"  (Joan Osbourne)  I never liked Joan's version but I love the version Prince does on Emancipation

Bruce Springsteen - Trapped

Jimmy Cliff wrote the original. Springsteen's version is so much better. I thought at first it Springsteen's own song, given how good it actually is.

As someone else mentioned the Johnny Cash version of Hurt is far superior to the original. This is coming from a huge NiN fan as well who loves the original. Even Trent agrees the Cash version is better. Trent once said (and I'm paraphrasing since I can't find the original source, but I know he said it) "It's like losing your girlfriend.. She just isn't yours anymore."

I actually listened to American IV on Saturday night, pretty good album overall.

I think Cash did a good job on the Hurt cover, sure, but I still prefer the original. Those are Trent's words and thoughts on the song, and no one sings them better than the man himself :)

And no, I don't care if Trent thinks Cash's version is better - I still stick by my opinion :P

The Stones version is better.. However the "uh uhs" annoy the hell out of me. The studio version could've been much better. But it's still an awesome song. Not the Stones' best though

There are not many covers that are marked with "ok" in my books, mostly because they slaughter the songs and turn into something it was never meant to be.

Amongst the few covers I acctually like, is the Thin Lizzy version of the Irish folksong Whiskey In The Jar.
Metallica turned it into fail.

I also like the Deep Purple cover of Hallelujah.

Covers are not my style. Done by people who wants to earn money on other peoples art: fail.

Gilby Clarke - Mecedes Benz
Green Day - Shout (they use it in the middle of King For a Day live. Kicks ass) Dont know who has the original, some black gospel chick or something.
Guns N Roses - Whole Lotta Rosie! I am a huge Ac/Dc fan, but still, Axl kicks ass in this song!!!
Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal -Jacko
Bumblefoot - Whats new pussycat? :p Tom Jones, aint it?

Tweeter and the Monkey Man - by the Headstones

I love it much more than the Traveling Wilbury's version.

I also enjoy GnR's version of Knockin' on Heaven's Door better than Dylan's.

Just a few that come to mind:

Aerosmith - Train Kept A' Rollin (originally a Yardbirds song); Come Together

That was a Tiny Bradshaw song. He did it in the early 50's. It was one of his biggest hits, but you're right, the Aerosmith cover kicks ass.

I always thought GnR's version of Jumpin Jack Flash was the absolute sheet.

Foo Fighters - Iron and Stone (The Obsessed)
BLS - I Never Dreamed (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
BLS - Whiter Shade of Pale (Procul Harum)
Sublime - We're Only Gonna Die (Bad Religion)
White Stripes - I Just Don't Know What to do With Myself (by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and popularized by Dusty Springfield)
Clash - I Fought the Law (Sonny Curtis)
Pearl Jam - Love Reign O'er Me (The Who)
Dropkick Murphys - Wild Rover (traditional, popularized by the Clancy Brothers)
Ben Harper - The Drugs Don't Work (The Verve)
Screaming Trees - Working Class Hero (John Lennon)
Velvet Revolver - Surrender (Cheap Trick)
Derek and the Dominos - Little Wing (Jimi Hendrix)

I always loved The Supersuckers version of the 'The Cowboy Song', not as much as the original by Thin Lizzy...
