Title: Acoustic GN'R show wishlist thread (if the played MTV Unplugged, Bridge Benefit etc)
Post by: AxlHBK on December 17, 2006, 11:10:59 PM
Since Korn just recently finished filming an MTV Unplugged show, it would be nice if the series eventually continued with Guns N' Roses. They obviously would have a setlist already available to them since they have played two such shows already. And if they do, they should include 'We Are Sailing', because that is the best thing (vocally) I've heard of Axl since he has been "back".

It would also be an excellent promotion tool for Chinese Democracy. MTV reaches enough new people to make the show worth it.

Not to mention it would be excellent.

Now THAT's a good idea.  And within the realm of possibilities I'd say.

This would be amazing, with the whole band swapping between steel acoustics, 12 strings, maybe even a hollow or a semi-hollow electric.. Pittman and Dizzy adding some keys.. Would sound beautiful.

"Madagascar" acoustic  :o

"There Was A Time" would sound awesome as well.

Imagine the whole band set up across the stage, with the chinese backdrop and the curtains / stage setup playing acoustics.. would have a really nice touch.. but I think such an event would have to wait until a few months following the album's release, just so people can really absorb the songs before they hear it more stripped down

I have to hear IRS acoustic. Apparently it was played at the acoustic shows.

Come to think of it....EVERYTHING would sound AWESOME!

If GNR does one thing as promotion for this album besides a music video, I want THIS!

the fact that Korn is doing one should show you how far the Unplugged albums have fallen.  :hihi:

I'd love to hear this btw.

1 welcome to the jungle
2 sweet child o'mine
3 civil war
4 dont cry
5 november rain
6 dead horse
7 better
8 twat
9 catcher in the rye

I think it's an amazing idea.... but I think it might be even better if they wait until the album has been out for a few months. ?Do the MTV Unplugged thing with a mix of old and new songs and release the show as a CD.

Honestly I think it would be one of the best things for the band to do.

That, actually, is a great idea.  Would give the public an introduction to the new band if they don't know who they are.  Also, would be good promoting for new cd and songs.  Very good idea.  Jarmo tell the band.

Itd probably be more like this realistically:

1. Welcome To The Jungle
2. Mr. Brownstone
3. Better
4) Knockin'
5) IRS
6) Madagascar
7) The Blues
8) Sweet Child O' Mine
9) You're Crazy
10) Used To Love Her
11) Patience

(not really in that order but those are songs I can see them playing)

Come on...

What about "Madagascar" acoustic?

Imagine..

12 string acoustics..
A nice hollow body electric for Richard's leads
The strings and brass / keyboards / synth

They'd have to do a few off side 2 from Lies.

I think late 07 would be perfect for the timing of it should we see CD in March.

I accept people's setlist, but I don't think such an occasion should be used to hear ridiculously stripped down versions of those classics we know so well how they should be heard - loud

Such judgement should wait until after the release of CD, but in the meantime I feel there could be a number of new songs we haven't heard yet that offer a new dynamic to GNR.. and leave the rest of the space for obvious older songs that work in acoustic / stripped down format.. "Welcome to the Jungle" might sound fun acoustic in a small club but in terms of a MTV production..

I hope people understand where I'm coming from..

A setlist would maybe start off along the lines of..

"Madagascar"
"There Was A Time"
"Catcher in the Rye"
"Used to Love Her"
"You're Crazy"
"Live and Let Die"
"Don't Cry"
"The Blues"
"Patience"
"Knocking on Heaven's Door"
"November Rain"
"Civil War"
"Sweet Child of Mine"

(Not in Order)

Yeah... "Sweet Child of Mine" would work acoustic.. I just mean.. songs like "Welcome to the Jungle", "Paradise City", "My Michelle", "It's So Easy", "Mr Brownstone".. those kinds of songs are meant to be loud and in your face with wah wah dripping off your face and your ears ringing from the distortion.. of course they can be played on acoustics but it would just sound ridiculous

GNR should do Unplugged. But they should do it Nirvana style and with a bunch of covers that are better than the original.
They should do a really powerful closer like Where Did You Sleep Last Night. Paradise City might not work.

Ok I understand where you're coming from, but see the thing with Nirvana was, they had alot of melodic songs of course but no matter how poppy some of them may have sounded, they would have been a bit too awkward acoustic. I feel Nirvana picked the best possible songs spanning their catalogue, to interpret acoustically, and yeah there were a few other songs that may have worked (honestly though I can't think of other songs off the top of my head). GNR have a number of songs that would work brilliantly acoustically that maybe they haven't even considered.. and they have sufficient covers in their catalogue that complement their original material, just like the Meat Puppets covers did alongside Nirvana's material. "Knocking on Heaven's Door", "Live and Let Die".. yknow?

I think Better would sound good accoustic (http://www.heretodaygonetohell.com/board/index.php?topic=37834.0). ;)

But I don't think it would be a good thing to promote the new album. They worked very hard to make it sound the way is supposed to sound, I dunno if they would be cool with having this approach officially released. I mean, they playing some secret accoustic gigs is ok, but to really do something for broadcast like this... I don't know, sounds like it's not the better way to promote such a complex album, if what they say about CD is true (wich I think it is).

You make some valid points.  BUT it would be a great promotional tool.  Re-expose themselves to the MTV crowd, whatever that may be these days.

I get where you're coming from, as I've always felt that the production of this album will be one of it's highlights, but I would presume that any sonic differences would be implied, by virtue of it being an unplugged set; the idea being that the songs are isolated and presented in a format that is unique to that occasion.

Yeah, hopefully Axl is reading this so that he goes forward with the idea, and it pushes back CD yet again.

Great idea, but I just have a feeling that it would delay the album again.

They'd do it after CD is released, but if they didnt... it wouldnt delay.... it'd take a few hours of there time.... but deffinetly after CD is released, not before.

I've heard The Blues and Madagascar acoustic already - but NOT by GNR, a brazilian artist Silvano Teixeira made a GNR tribute album ("Brazilian Democracy") with GNR acoustic songs (most of them instrumental), and Mad-at-nascar and Blues are from the "new-era". They sound amazing, especially the blues....

as much as I'd love to have an official release of what they've been playing in the secret acoustic shows, i think i'm with Voodoochild in this one.. i mean, it wouldn't be wise to release CD after such a long time and immediately release an acoustic album, it would kill the momentum CD could build and the most important thing right now is CD, and people have to get used to the way the songs sound, not a good idea to release acoustic versions as well

usually the MTV Acoustic shows are a way for artists/bands to release something when they have nothing goin on, it gets things pumped again, as it reaches a lot of people and then they profit from the release of a CD/DVD convo instead of putting out another LP

I always wanted GnR to do an unplugged show for MTV. I remember hearing about the unplugged CBGB gig with the original band and when I finally got to see it I thought it was amazing even though the camera work wasn't great but it was brilliant. I don't doubt Axl will do alot of things this time that he never got round to doing before and I think such a show would be one of them

As much as I've always loved the idea of GNR Unplugged, I still cannot understand why everyone here says "It would be a great way to promote the album!"
When did fans turn to Public Reltations?
Why not say "That would be an awesome show!"
Who cares about promotion/sales/tickets/publicity? The music is all that matters. Let management and the band worry about the business side of things. Every thread here makes this board look like it's some sort of business project for school...

With that said...
The GNR Unplugged Bootleg that was really popular is EXCELLENT. It's a bunch of songs from the acoustic part of the set in '93, and the CBGB's acoustic set from '87 (or was it 88?)
You Ain't The First was 10x better with Axl on vocals.

It's unlikely they'd do it (release an unplugged CD) to promote Chi Dem.   Having two new CDs on sale at the same time would tend to cannibalize the sales of both discs.

You could argue that this wasn't the case with UYI I and UYI II, however we don't know how well a single UYI disc would have sold had it been the original release.   There are many that think that every track on both discs is a standout, but there are many that like a bunch of songs off each and think that each has a filler track or two.    There WAS a limited UYI release but I think most of us agree it wasn't as good as it could be and of course it was released WAY after the original UYI I and UYI II releases.   IF UYI I and UYI II sold 10m each, would a "combined" disc have sold 15m?   Who knows...  The UYI I and UYI II release is obviously very far from the norm.

Many of the hardcore GNR fans would pick up both Chi Dem and Unplugged the same day without flinching.   But for a more average music shopper it's more likely that they'd pick one of the two discs to buy as opposed to both.

However - doing the unplugged show now and then releasing the unplugged CD and DVD later down the track would make more sense.   It may not directly promote Chi Dem but it would promote the band.

The version of SCOM that Sheryl Crow did for Big Daddy was acoustic. She butchered the vocals, but the acoustics didn't sound too bad. I think GN'R could make it work.

I'd like to see....

1 Sweet Child O' Mine
2 Patience
3 The Blues
4 Dead Horse
5 The Catcher In The Rye
6 Look At Your Game Girl
7 Used To Love Her
8 One In A Million
9 Madagascar
10 Don't Cry
11 I.R.S.
12 Sailing

That would definitely be a memorable set and I think in a closed environment like Unplugged they could get away with performing some of the controversial songs without causing a lot of waves.

Kind of a cool idea, though I can't say I'm thrilled about the idea of WTTJ acoustic.  Just seems wrong.

But the slower, more ballad-esque tracks would easily lend themselves to it, and you could fill in the spaces with acoustic versions of more hard-hitting stuff.

I'd buy it.

I think it'd show the versatility of the entire band to do songs of all different types.

I think breaking apart something like Better or Jungle to the roots of the groove would show just what these guys have to offer.

Nope, there were lots of bands who didn't release their MTV unplugged on CD or DVD.
Pearl Jam's was never released at all, while Nirvana's was only on CD.

The fact that they've played two acoustic shows this year proves that they could actually pull it off.

I guess playing in a concert setting with TV cameras would be a bit different than playing in a night club.  ;)

A set similar to the London one, just with a few additions, would be cool. Mixing old, some covers and new:

Welcome To The Jungle
Mr. Brownstone
You're Crazy [edited from the MTV broadcast  :hihi: ]
New track we haven't head
Used To Love Her
Sailing
Patience
New track we haven't head
Richard & Robin instrumental / Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Sweet Child O' Mine
IRS
Ron, Dizzy & Axl [a cover or new song] / The Blues
November Rain
New track we haven't head
Nightrain
Madagascar
Paradise City

'Sailing' for sure, what a great vocal performance he does on that.
Though I would want to see this released DVD/CD and these can sometimes be major releases (Nirvana anyone?)
ANything Guns would for sure create a major release and I don't want any major release before CD and I imagine sometime after that they will tour and support CD......It would be nice to have it drop after that to tide us over for the next studio album.

Guns played the Bridge School Benefit?? It would be the perfect chance for the world to witness an acoustic Guns show for once with prior announcement.? For those who don't know what the Bridge School Benefit is, it is an annual concert put on by Neil and Peggy Young for the bridge school, a school for children with severe speech and physical disabilities, such as cerebral palsy.? I think it would be a great thing for Guns to play it.? All the bands play an acoustic (well, almost acoustic) set .? It's not like they are too big or too heavy to play the show, Paul McCartney played in 2004, and even weird bands that don't really fit play the show, such as Trent Reznor.? Do you think it's a good idea? and does anyone think that it is somewhat plausible? Your thoughts please...

Would be kinda weird if Axl sang "It's been fourteen years of silence" to a mute kid, now wouldn't it? ... But it's a fantastic idea you got there, and they should play the following four songs.

Patience
The Blues
Knockin' On Heaven's Door
I Used To Love Her

I think it would be an awesome thing to see but can't really picture it happening. Not sure GNR fits in with their vibe. Can you imagine Axl singing "I used to love her but I had to kill her" to children with speech impediments? That would be a bit surreal.

they have many songs they can do acoustic, not just used to love her, they would be great at the benefit show, great publicity

That'd be great. People should realise there's another dimension and sound to Guns and Roses than just "Welcome to the Jungle". It wouldn't just be some random acoustic show in New York city that you read about on the Internet. It would be well publicised.

There are so many songs they could use. "Used to Love Her"? Uh.... no.

Patience
The Blues
November Rain
Knocking on Heavens Door
Madagascar

I think this would be a great idea/opportunity if they were invited to play by Neil.

you could play at least half of their songs on acoustic and they would sound alright.

Itd probably be more like this realistically:

1. Welcome To The Jungle
2. Mr. Brownstone
3. Better
4) Knockin'
5) IRS
6) Madagascar
7) The Blues
8) Sweet Child O' Mine
9) You're Crazy
10) Used To Love Her
11) Patience

(not really in that order but those are songs I can see them playing)

^^for example

Yeah and I forgot November Rain which would be pretty cool. ^

I'm sure there's alot of songs that would kickass, especially ones we havent heard yet, but out of the ones we know, that setlist makes the most sense. : ok:

actually, they do play in front of the kids, they are usually on stage behind the bands, sitting in bleacher style seats.

I don't think Axl screaming "Do you know where the fuck you are?" would work very well either... But still, a fantastic idea, the last acoustic show they did seemed great.

I am trying to pick songs that I have heard GNR play acoustic, or songs that are acoustic tunes.  For example, I'm not sure how SCOM or Better would be acoustic...plus, I am trying to toss in some tunes that aren't played much....Here goes:

Open with either Jungle or something off of CD
Patience
Dust N Bones
Sailing
Mr. Brownstone
November Rain
IRS
You're Crazy
CITR-for some reason I think this would be perfect
Close the show with PC, so we hear GOOD FUCKING NIGHT!!!!!!!!!

i vividly remember IRS, the energy axl put into it was electrifying! he was really manic during this song. the bit "when you first told me you were gone...etc" you know always sounds awesome live as he puts a lot of anger into "thats the truth and heres the worst yet" and that was magnified a million times at that show. plus i think the fact that youre in a tiny room standing right infront of him also helps you really absorb the emotion

If they did an acoustic version of Sweet Child, then I think a violin or cello (since Richard knows how to play the cello) would be a nice fit.
