Title: Lyric-driven music?
Post by: The Estranged MrFlashbax on December 13, 2006, 08:34:23 PM
i'm looking for bands or musicians to listen to who're very lyrically driven.. songs that're written more like poetry or something that has an actual story to tell or something rather than just a catchy hook.. can anyone help me out here?

The Cure. especially their older stuff. Disintegration is my favorite, that whole album is flawless.

already a cure fan  : ok:

i was looking for music that's a bit more intellectual and intelligently made.... and perhaps a little less depressing than the cure

I don't know about you guys but I think Shannon Hoon's lyrics are very interesting, genious, great and poetic too. So check some Blind Melon stuff.

cradle of filth-  but i recommend reading the lyrics as they go, as they will go fast and loud-  this is exactly what you want!

Prince "The Rainbow Children"

This CD is one long ass concept album before concept albums were the in thing to do.

crazy CD that intertwines, love, God, spirituality............ It took me about 20 listens to form an intelligent opinion on what the Cd is about.

It has great Guitar, great lyrics, great overall music.

The band you are looking for is called The Tragically Hip...  They've got the lyrics and the hooks.  Start with Nautical Disaster if you want storytelling, or "38 Years Old", here's a sample:

Twelve men broke loose in '73
From Milhaven maximum security
Twelve pictures lined up across the front page
seems the mounties had a summertime war to wage
The chief told the people they had nothing to fear
The last thing they'd wanna do is hang around here
They mostly came from towns with long French names
But one of the dozen was a hometown shame

Same pattern on the table, same clock on the wall
Been one seat empty 18 years in all
Freezing slow time away from the world
He's 38 years old, never kissed a girl

Bob Dylan is great

Bruce Springsteen too, especially the album Nebraska. Every song is a little story, without a especific chorus

And Animals, by Pink Floyd
