I like Blind Melon a lot.  I think Shannon is a very underrated song writer.  The thing that pisses me off is that they were on VH1's one hit wonder countdown.  It wouldn't have been as bad if they were #1, but they were #99.  I personally don't think they were one hit wonders, maybe they had one huge song, but not only one great song.  I like the album that came out after Shannon Hoon died, Nico.  There are some really cool songs on that cd.  I can't wait for rarites and a live cd to come out.  That will be great.

Hopefully this album gets out soon, I'm still very excited about it.

Well, it MIGHT not be that far away. I've heard that they are indeed working on this, but I don't know how legit the information is.

What I do know, is that there will be a Blind Melon tribute-album released next year =)

naaaaw, Classic Masters was more than enough of a Best Of album, what I wanted now was a rarities/b-side album!
I probably have all the songs on this album, plus all the videos and live versions of No Rain on their previous DVD, Letters from a Porcupine.
Im gonna download that concert for sure though...I'll probably get the other stuff as well! :P ;D

BLIND MELON : 10th Anniversary of Shannon Hoon's Passing Commemorated With New Releases

July 11, 2005
To mark the 10th anniversary of the passing of Blind Melon's lead singer Shannon Hoon, age 28, from a drug overdose on October 21, 1995, the surviving band members and EMI Catalog Marketing will release the band's first ever "Best Of" collection and two never before released live concerts to properly anthologize the band's tragically short but influential musical career.

September 27 will see the releases of:

Tones Of Home: The Best Of Blind Melon
The band's first ever hits collection. It includes 19 studio and live tracks, including the band's #1 smash hit, "No Rain" and the Top 10 single "Galaxie" and their endearing version of "Three Is The Magic Number" from Schoolhouse Rock. A limited edition release will contain a bonus DVD with include a 6 videos including both the video and a live concert performance of "No Rain".

Blind Melon: Live At the Metro 9.27.95
The band's first-ever concert DVD features a full 19-song concert filmed on September 27, 1995 during the band's final tour. It also contains 3 bonus songs from an acoustic performance on Canada's Much Music TV.

Blind Melon: Live At the Palace 10.11.95
12 songs from their 3rd to their last concert and last professionally recorded concert will be made available only as a digital download.

Since Blind Melon's self-titled debut was released in 1992 with its now iconic "bee girl" cover art, the band has sold more than three million albums. Blind Melon personified the Modern Rock format of the early '90s, scoring genre-defining chart hits alongside their contemporaries, Soul Asylum and the Gin Blossoms. The chart-topping single "No Rain" became a phenomenon when coupled with the brilliant music video that launched a thousand Halloween "bee girl" costumes. To this day, the song receives recurrent radio spins, and was an integral music piece on the music-forward TV series, "The OC."

When Kurt Cobain died in 1994, Hoon recognized his own troubles and entered drug rehab, but upon his return to his rock star life, he fell back into his familiar drug use patterns. The follow up, Soup, was released in 1995. After a concert in Houston, TX on October 20, 1995 the band boarded the tour bus for an overnight drive to New Orleans, LA. Upon arriving, the rest of the band checked into their rooms and caught up on sleep, while Hoon opted to wander the city, later returning to his bunk on the bus. There he overdosed and died.

Without Shannon Hoon, the remaining members of Blind Melon decided it would be best to end the band, and all went on to pursue their own interests. In 1996, Capitol issued a CD of Blind Melon studio outtakes and rarities, Nico, and the Grammy?-nominated Letters From a Porcupine home video with live performances, interviews and the band's own home movies (an expanded DVD was issued in 2001).

Ten years later, the surviving members have all found successful lives doing what they love. Brad Smith and Christopher Thorn co-own and operate a recording studio in Los Angeles, Studio Wishbone (www.studiowishbone.com), where they record their own solo music and produce other artists' recordings, including Anna Nalick's Top 20 debut, Wreck Of The Day. Rogers Stevens is the guitarist for the Tender Trio, a new band with former Spacehog frontman Royston Langston, and Glen Graham has retired to North Carolina, where he has immersed himself in painting.

yeah I know, cool stuff.
it annoys me when the people who write the articles write stuff like "the band has sold more than three million albums"...it just sounds so inaccurate and wrong when they have sold at least 5 million copies in USA alone...hell, their first album alone sold well over 4 million, and the following releases has sold a few hundred thousands each, and that's just in America.
they've probably sold 12 million worldwide.
just annoyed me cos it makes them sound smaller than what they are/were, and this sorta stuff happens all the time. with GN'R too.

see, those figures gives you a totally wrong perception.
that's whay I always try to correct them, but it would be a lot easier if the journalists would spend a few minutes and get the facts right themselves!

Blind Melon to me sound a lot like The La's.  Each had a huge hit ("No Rain" by Blind Melon, "There She Goes" by The La's) where they had a lot of good, original elements, and a great personality as a band, but you only know the one song in each case.  I don't know of any other good Blind Melon songs, but if you guys could list your faves that would be really cool.

how about just picking up the Best Of album when it's released, Mattman.
(or if you're gonna be a bitch and download them, just look at the tracklisting for either that one or the Classic Masters album, hehe)

Blind Melon to me sound a lot like The La's.? Each had a huge hit ("No Rain" by Blind Melon, "There She Goes" by The La's) where they had a lot of good, original elements, and a great personality as a band, but you only know the one song in each case.? I don't know of any other good Blind Melon songs, but if you guys could list your faves that would be really cool.

I recommend the first 2 albums, they are both fantastic front to back

specifically my favorite tunes from each are

Blind Melon:
1. Soak the Sin
2. Tones of Home
6. Change
7. No Rain
9. Sleepyhouse
13. Time

Soup:
1. Galaxie
4. Skinned
8. Car Seat (God's Presents)  Listen Listen
11. St. Andrew's Fall
13. Mouthful Of Cavities
14. Lemonade

Nico is ok, but it's all rough cuz it's incomplete tracks that Shannon was working on before he died. It contains a really cool, trippy version of "No Rain".  that, the cover of "The Pusher" (orig by Steppenwolf) and "Life ain't so shitty" are my fav's from it.

Seriously though, Blinfd Melon kicks alot of ass. When they first came out i bought The self titled album and didn't really care for it, but 2 years ago My buddy turned me back on to them and I love them now!!!

Seriously you could probably find all 3 albums used for like $5 each, you won't be dissappointed.

hope that helps dude.

Title: Re: Blind Melon
Post by: Butch Français on September 01, 2005, 05:37:24 PM
the only rough parts in 'Nico' is Shannon's vocals, and I think they sound fantastic!
the band re-recorded the music after he died, so there's nothing rough about it.

I have the Classic Masters and the self-titled. I like them very well. They are from Lafayette, where Axl and Izzy are from. I grew up about 3 hours southeast of where he did. His daughter Nico goes to school there.

I visited his grave on 11-07-04. It was really a great thing to see. His tombstone is beautiful. He also has these words eched on the stone. "So I'll write the words on the face of today, and then they'll paint it."

Great man, troubled man amazing singer.

Really is a shame that he died.  I heard that there is more music that they recorded also, I believe the guitar player was talking about possibly releasing more of it sometime in the future.  Does anyone else remember hearing this?

Title: Re: Blind Melon
Post by: Jim on August 01, 2006, 06:37:04 PM
I've started to get into them recently through their self-titled, what does everyone else think of them?

I had the self-titled and Nico for ages before I got round to buying Soup. All I'll tell you is,

buy it now! Before hearing that album I thought that they were just a great band, but now they're one of my favourites. As much as I loved the self-titled, I have to be in the right mood to listen to the majority of it, there are only a couple of songs, like Holy Man, that transcend mood. But with Soup, I feel like I can put it on any time and, as I've said here before, I think that it's one of the best vocally recorded albums of all time. The last three songs are just like, seriously... wow.

Some of you guys have no idea what you're talking about. Blind Melon wasn't Shannon Hoon's band. Different voice? Well done. Best vocalist ever? Well, no, but certainly one of them. It's their fucking band. Respect? Respect for what? Shannon Hoon? Shannon Hoon in what way? Pissing over his legacy? Hardly.

Why cant people ever come up with new ideas?!

New ideas? What are you talking about? Rehash? Ooh. It's the same musicians!, with the same name! You're on a Guns N' Roses board buddy, and they can't even claim to have the former.

I'm interested in this definately. those guys were gooood musicians.  blind melon's first album reminds me of a very particular time in my life, shannon was a wicked lyricist and performer. much missed.

Cool, the year of the rehash. Just what we need.

Look out for Beatles reunion with Macca, Head Welch, Dave Ellefson, and a drum machine.

Why cant people ever come up with new ideas?!

New ideas? What are you talking about? Rehash? Ooh. It's the same musicians!, with the same name! You're on a Guns N' Roses board buddy, and they can't even claim to have the former.

Go get a clue.

Lol, nice one...

My point was why is it that every band has now decided to reform or whatever minus a vital ingredient of their band. AIC, Blind Melon....to name but two anyway.... Its only 2006 and everyone seems to be on a 90s nostalgia trip. I guess its just a sad indication of the music scene today in the fact that we 're seeing a lot of bands trying to recreate former glories in a time when music, in general, is shit.

For your info, I dont class Axl's band as GNR, for me its an Axl solo project. No way is it GNR. Its just called that cos someone is scared of only selling 10 albums.

This is despicable. Truly Horrible, have some respect for Shannon Hoon!

i guess they figure if INXS and AIC can do it so can they? :-\

is it the same singer from "Unified Theory" (A band formed with the BM guys after shannon died) or is it a new guy? :-\

I hope so, that dude could pull Shannon off.........I liked his singing.......

it's a new guy, but he's got a similar voice to Chris Shinn (Unified Theory).
the new song is great and the video is cool, amazing to see the guys back together!

btw, neither Shinn or Travis can "pull Shannon off", they're not really similar to him except for the voices being in the higher registers.

I'm not sure if it's because of Travis or just because the songs seem better, but I'm liking this WAY more than Unified Theory.

You know there's someone on this board named Dolphin.

Coinsidence that there's someone on a GNR board named Dolphin and then someone else releases an album with the same name as GNR and there's a Dolphin on the front cover?

I think not.

Glen is great IMO. But the main difference in the instrumental sound of the bands were the lack of Stevens on guitar in UT. that's what made the bands soun very different I think. Rog really puts the Blind in Melon : ok:

Letters From a Porcupine is more or less a collection of live footage with little interview clips together. I'm sure you can find all of the muchmusic show too.

Any word on when the new album is going to be out? Those 3 new songs are now like 6 months old right?

Travis Warren. His voice can be heard on the new songs: http://www.blindmelonmach2.com/mp3s/wimpy.php

He's the closest I've ever heard to Shannon, but I don't think that's the point. He's got a good voice, and I think he even wrote Harmful Belly. Listen to all 3, because Make a Difference doesn't hit me like the other 2 do.

im a huge bm fan. have been since 94' and i thought you were right, but travis really is good. he will be true to shannon, but also has his own style. this is very exciting for bm fans. ive been waiting for this for 12 years....there have been several starts and stops for this project. They guys had several solo acts and other bands, but this is the real deal. it has taken a long time, but it will be well worth it....they will do old and new songs....

That's true, he had amazing voice and he was a fuckin' great on stage (judging by bootlegs), but this new guy is great too. Not filling Shannon's shoes but doing amazing job anyway. Don't know how Axl feels about it though. But the comment about bitchin' was just a joke : ok:

i found a zip file with the new blind melon songs

Thank you very much!

Here's the I&I performance I promised. Hope Dime won't delete it for some reason :P
http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=167533

EDIT. ok forget the fuckin' Dime, it's impossible to satisfy the mods there. So it got deleted as I don't know the exact dates and venues for all the bonus material on the dvd (you see, the year is not enough). This shit is fucking annoying.

CheapJon, say another tracker and I'll upload it there..?

Try tradersden.org. Dime really is a bitch about details about the torrents.

From the Chicago and Urbana boots Travis is really tearing up the old stuff. The new songs sound better live than on myspace too.

ST is awesome, soup is not as good but still good in its own right, especially "mouthfull of cavities"

Soup is actually my favourite, definately one of the most underrated albums that I can think of!

hmmm - I'll have to check out the new band although Blind Melon has always been Shannon to me.

I took so much shit for fighting my way to the front at Woodstock '94.  Everyone that I was with gave me crap for fighting so hard for a dude with a white dress and barrettes in his hair.  >:(  Oh, well, I'm damn glad that I did now!

I usually don't post here, but I thought I'd get you guys updated.

Album will be out on April 22nd. It is titled 'For My Friends'.

Tracklist- according to Rogers...

1. for my friends
2. right set of eyes
3. wishing well
4. sometimes
5. tumblin down
6. down on the pharmacy
7. make a difference
8. harmful belly
9. last laugh
10. hypnotized
11. father time
12. so high
13. cheetum street (featuring a duet with Travis' mom, the fabulous Tennessee Tuckness...what a voice!)

Album cover released--
(http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/792/newalbumcoverbmcm9.jpg)

And something to think about. Put that picture next to this one from Shannon on Nico, I think it is.

Could it be meant as a young Travis in the same backseat as Shannon? I don't know, but it's pretty interesting, in my mind.

i have their cd as well, it's so good! so inspiring!

i couldn't even believe they'd be able to replace shannon, but this is such an homage to shannon in the first place, they're doing it with such grace and the songs just sound exactly how'd i'd like 'em to be, even better.

Def one of the best touring bands out there. there's a lot of emotion relating Blind Melon cuz Shannon touched so many of us, and he was such an unique soul, but it's great to see they're out there, doing justice to the past and achieving new ground.

Congrats to the new singer, it must've been hell to deal with the pressure of replacing shannon, but he did it! he's got something goin that actually works very well. i love his voice and he's got soul.

congrats to blind melon, i'll be def buying this record and i hope they get to tour europe.

Shannon would be proud i'm sure.

anyways, i was goin through youtube and came accross a video of Blind Melon playing Changes with Shannon's daughter Nico on lead vocals. i thought it was amazing and very touching. check that out!

and another one of Guns N Roses with Shannon playing don't cry in 1991 on madison square garden, pure freakin magic!!

and on another note, does anyone have their behind the musical special? it was on youtube some time ago, but it got removed and i can't find anywhere... if anyone knows where to get it, please let me know!

RIP Shannon! thank you for the music and inspiration :)

Been awhile since I posted.

I saw Blind Melon in March in Nashville @ the Cannery Ballroom.

It was a awesome awesome show. I was seriously impressed. Of course it's the originals with a new singer obviously.

I don't know the whole set list but they played at least 16 songs maybe 18... not sure.

I got to meet all of the band, and got 2 guitar picks. "Change" was amazing. They did play 4-5 new tunes but the old ones were so much better...

Rock on, and their were about 300-400 people there. Not bad for being out of the light for 12 years.

I had high hopes for this one but the magic just isn't there.  It as a few good songs.  The new singer sounds like a cross between Vince Neil and Shannon.  Maybe they pull it off better live.

Just thought I would say that Blind Melon played at the benefit where Slash was.

They played some new songs. Their album debuted at #168 on the charts. A little low I thought, considering the album is better than 1/4 of the trash in the top 100.

Check out this album guys! Saw them live in NAshville, and they will unbelieveable!

From the brief clips I'd heard of them before, I'd not really liked Shannon Hoon's voice, but listening to the samples of their first album that iTunes gives you, my opinion has improved suddenly. I might check it out properly at some point....

Been listening a lot lately. I can't get over how good Shannon's voice sounds on Soup, the song.

It's sad really, I think he could have developed to be one of the really big ones. I know these things are impossible to speculate on, but he had a gift that's for sure.

I didn't mean that his voice necessarily would develop any more. More in terms of him as an artist, he could have been more known to the world.

There's a Kickstarter campaign out now to raise funds to complete a Shannon Hoon documentary. They will be using material from the 200+ hours of footage shot by Shannon himself between 1990 and 1995. He basically documented the creation and rise of Blind Melon.

Maybe there will be some footage from the Use Your Illusion recording. I know he had his camera with him, there's that video where Axl wishes Shannon's mom a merry christmas.

Soup is simply one of the most underrated albums of all time.

Probably the most underrated of the 90s I would think.
