Title: Sailing Cover
Post by: welshrose on December 01, 2006, 01:18:22 PM
Man alive. I dont think I have ever heard Axl sound as incredible and honest as he is on this cover.

This song hasnt left my iPod since I first got the mp3 back in August.

The slow intro into the climatic finally is nothing short of brilliant, Axl's voice is unreal, I almost get teary when I hear it.

Tell me what you guys think of it!!!

it should be in the appetite for collection area. I am not sure this constitutes as a new unreleased song so I cant offer it myself.

Rod Stewart released the song in 1975 and it is on iTunes. the structure of the song is the exact same.

He's talking about the live version GnR did on July 29th.

(Unless he's talking about the version they did at the secret show a few hours later.

Agreed.  The night I first heard the live version of "Sailing" I must've listened to it a half dozen times.  It blew me away.  I too would love to see that on Chinese Democracy, if it ever comes out.

Post by: Ellroy on December 01, 2006, 03:22:06 PM
Completely agree. It's a great song to begin with but Axl's vocals and Finck in the background really lift it up.

I would love a studio cover of this for a soundtrack or a b-side, some kind of extra.

Even the recording we're all talking about really shows off Axl's vocals and delivery.

my dad is a big rod stewart fan and I grew up listening to him howl along with this song when he was a few drinks in - to be honest, I really didnt like the song.

but, axl gave it so much emotion - it has changed my mind.  still not a song I listen to a lot ( the wembley version I have) - but massive credit to the band for making it sound so cool.

Too bad that one bitch keeps yaking on through the whole thing.? >:( Otherwise - terrific!

I'm pretty sure towards the beginning you can hear some guy say "he's gonna be singing this shit!"
Typical... just like at a real show, there's always some asshole complaining or talking, standing in your way, pushing, singing in your ear, something.
It's funny how things get immortalized in a boot though. The things that stick in my head.

Like "Axl Axl Axl... oh man we got down at the wrong time..." on the first boot of Chinese Democracy.
And how many of us sang along with OK NEVERMIND on the blues.

But this Sailing cover is now on my GNR playlist and the background noise isn't nearly bad enough to distract.

He has truly turned into great singer. If he could master complete vocal control live, he would be one of the best. If he showcases this kind of ability on 'Chinese Democracy' then it will be the best ever Axl vocal effort.

Sailing was a very intense moment at Wembley...and after at the acustic gig..I had the shivers for the emotion..and now while I listen that live version,I feel a lot of emotions and melancholy..I miss last summer,I miss the european tour..I miss the crazy days that I have spent in Milan,Paris..London...unforgettable moments? :'(

Post by: Finck About You on December 04, 2006, 11:29:33 AM
Man this is great, amusing that Finck's solo seems to confuse some girl who says "Uh, hang on". Who talks during songs?! Bloody hell.

And I also fondly remember listening to The Blues RIR3 and thinking "OK never mind" was part of the song. That performance was so great, wish Axl hadn't messed with the intro between that era and now.

Are you talking about "I'm sailing away"? Or come sail away? Which I think is the rock band Chicago and they make fun of it on South Park. Or actually maybe it is Styx, probably is Styx cause the singer sounds the same.

Here's what I've got

I am sailing
I am sailing
home again across the sea.
I am sailing stormy waters
to be near you to be free.
I am flying
I am flying like a bird across the sky
I am flying passing high clouds to be with you to be free.

Can you hear me
can you hear me through the dark night far away.
I am dying forever trying to be with you who can say.
Can you hear me
can you hear me through the dark night far away.
I am dying forever trying to be with you who can say.

We are sailing
we are sailing home again across the sea.
VVe are sailing stormy waters to be near you to be free.

Oh Lord to be near you to be free
Oh Lord to be near you to be free . . .

GN'R covering a bunch of "proper English songs" in London in 2006.

Sway (the Rolling Stones), Sailing (Rod Stewart), Back In The USSR (The Beatles)

Very cool selection. :D

Axl neeeeeeeeeeeeeeds to do a studio recording of Sailing, and just release it as a single.

Actually, just use the wembley version, and fix it in in the studio and release it.

The single would go to no1 in a matter of minutes , all around the world.

a bit hard to do a studio version and use the live version...
Ron doing the Robin solo, or Ashba, or Fortus... to complicated.
Just record it put it on album 2 and release it.

if only as a first single (would be cool!)

Would be cool if Axl sang some of this as an intro before they played "Madagascar" - would transition really nicely I think.

Thanks to welshrose for starting this topic - I had forgotten they had covered this in '06...and almost forgot how amazing it sounded.
