Title: Axl's vocal influences?
Post by: fixintodie on November 25, 2006, 10:10:42 PM
Just curious, can anyone share any quotes from Axl regarding any vocal influences he might have? I don't remember every reading much about it - though whether he just never discussed it, or my memory is bad...well, hopefully we'll find out.

I would guess obvious ones would be Steven Tyler (for the vocal pyrotechnics) and Alice Cooper (for the attitude/sneer).

And I do remember hearing that Axl originally sang The Garden solo, then someone pointed out he sounded just like Alice Cooper on the chorus, and since A.C. is a Gunners fan, he was asked to record the part himself.

Any one got any more?

I'd say he was probably influenced by Bon Scott and Janis Joplin as well.

I remember reading an article years ago that Axl idolized Elton John when he was younger.  So I guess Elton John would be an influence as well.

I think axl took the pianos and melodies from Elton John more than the voice.

Bon Scott/Brian Johnson definetely.  I suspect Robert Plant had a bit of influence too, he did on most rock n roll singing.  That wail...

I think Dan McCafferty from Nazareth had to be something of an influence.

I actually have a book(let) which says that the whole reason Axl started singing the way he did because he did a cover of "Love Hurts" by Nazareth and it stuck. So, concerning his vocals, I'd say you are spot on there.
