Title: Just got back from MSG
Post by: PENNY16161 on November 11, 2006, 02:21:52 AM
Just got home from MSG - INCREDIBLE show!  I was on the floor, next to the railing on the [Robin] side - coolest part is right before GnR came out, a bunch of "VIPs" came and stood on the toher side of the railing (guys from papa roach, scott ian, and Robin's family!)

The crowd was awesome - everyone was into it and loving it, much better than Sunday's show at the Meadowlands which I was at as well.  I'd say the place was sold out, if not about 98% full.  A lot of people knew all of the old songs and the new "leaked" songs, btu surprisingly fewer knew the Blues and Chinese Democracy than they did Better and IRS

Axl seemed to be having an awesome time, running arouond, jumping, smiling (!) - I got nervous everytime soemone would throw something, thinking he'd give us a warning like aat NJ or just storm off, but he picked it up (held and wore a brazil (?) flag in the beginning, spun a girls bra around before putting it on Robin's mic stand, etc)

Nothing new in the set, no comments about a release date, but they absolutely tore the garden apart and people loved every minute of it!

Strange... you give it a great review.

But lots of people who weren't there seem to be disappointed.  I'll believe YOU because you were actually there.

Nothing to the effect about a release ..but it's the mystique called Axl Rose..

I just got back myself.

I thought it was a very good show. The band sounded very tight. I didn't notice any sound issues with GNR, although it looked like Sebastian Bach had some mic problems. The individual solos during the night were much better than at the Hammerstein shows I thought. Also, Frank really keeps the crowd going while set changes are being made. The band jams during set changes also helped to move the show along.

Ron was definitely made the show for me. His playing was outstanding. His solo was the highlight of the night. The fretless work on Nightrain was also unbelievable.

Although not too much change as far as the set list went, I thought it was a good show and very representative of what the new band is all about.

I have to agree with the individual solos were a lot better than what they did at Hammerstein in May.. Not sure but did  Bumblefoot do an Ace Frehley solo as Baz said when he came on stage  for My Michelle?

I didn't know it by hearing it because I'm not a huge Kiss fan, but apparently Ron played Ace's solo from Alive!

Another thing I noticed was how active the band is. They don't stick to their sides of the stage at all. They are constantly running around and jamming on different parts of the stage. There is also a lot more band interaction during the show. This is a big departure from when I saw them in 2002 with Buckethead in Vegas. I think Ron and Richard really add to the band's overall energy. Really cool shit.

I have to agree with Axl's mic at times were low and lost from the guitars which were drowning out Axl's voice at times.

As for the band bein mobile...hell yeah..Got to love Robin crowd surf ..I don't see that many bands do that

Just got back from the show!. What a difference a few days make!. I knew that this show would make up for the NJ sjow......

I got to MSG during the last song of Bachs set. Papa Roach was solid. ...

WHat can I say about GNR? I mean they tore the roof down yet again. NYC and GNR make for an incredible show. The place was packed and ready to party. As expected every old song was sung word for word with great intensity. A good part of the time I couldnt even here Axl because the crowd was so dam loud. This is how a rock show should be. Everyone should experience GNR at MSG. There is nothing that beats it.

Every song was basically a highlight. Better and IRS really stood out tonight. As well as November Rain and Patience. The band was perfect. Played with such passion and energy. And the crowd was into the band. You can tell very easily that this crowd was intot he new band, cheering th enew guys A LOT? more than in 02. Its not even close. ROns solo was great tonight. Robing crowd surfing. Great show. Pittman with the phat white suit.

I love this band. The quiet arrogance, energy, passion, chemistry, and straight in ur face rock is unmatched.

All I can tell you is to make it your business to travel to see this band at MSG. case closed. You will not regret it. trust me

bring on Chinese Democracy!

i just got in from the show, I live in ct and made pretty good time.  the show was awsome, i was right in front.  Axl's stage presence was amazing. robin was the shit!  He came right out to the crowd and stared at the people next to me the whole time he was making the riffs for welcome to the jungle, unbelievable.  And his crowd surf was a little more successful this time than when he tried it when i saw them at the Hammerstein on may 15th.  Just a truley awsome show, wish they could have played madagascar and rocket queen, but i loved the set anyway. Nighttrain was flawless.  Only wish axl could have given us a hint about the album's release

I just got home from the show too! It was amazing. I had section 129 seats...which isn't too close to the stage but I can see the entire sea of people.the place was bumpin through out the whole show. No one was in their seats.
Not a single boo the whole night...everyone loved the solos as did I. Axl and the band was perfect! Thanks for a great night boys!!!

Just got back as well...yeah the crowd was WAY more into it this time around as opposed to NJ...Now GNR kicked just as much ass in jersey but the crowd was lame...not the bands fault...Im from Jersey, and if its not Bon Jovi or Bruce Springsteen, people just dont get it....we are not the brightest of states.....anyway the garden was rockin, and just about the whole crowd went beserk from start to finish....it was very much like the Hammerstein shows as far as atmosphere goes, just on a bigger level...Axl sounded great, the band sounded great as well...I was talking to a bunch of people on the train ride back and they were all just going nuts about the show...not just hardcore fans, but the general type of people who just bought tickets to check out the show were blown away. ?A few women must have been in their late 30's said they couldnt believe how great Axl sounded and how great the new band is...some of the people on the train admitted to being skeptical on the way in to the show, but left the show completely blown away.....It was a great night!!!

I saw something very adorable tonight at the show. A mother and her 2 sons was in my section. The 2 sons are in their preteens-early teens and they were very into the show in the beginning but kinda sat down and watched after the first hour. But everytime I looked over to the mother she was standing and groovin to the music.. she looked completed mesmerized by Axl the entire show. GNR does transcend all age groups.

I noticed the same thing after Oslo...skeptical crowd...left as fans when the show was over.

how does everyone stay amped for the same setlist and old classic tunes these guys weren't on also with no news of CD>.??? 7 classics right off the bat, bach on my michelle.. I don't see the excitiment, it's the same old same old each leg..

Dude! ?Did you actually go to the show? ?If not STFU. ?This is getting old. ?I went to the Worseter show with 5 other casual GNR fans which most likley makes up 80% of the audience. ?They left saying that it was one, if not the best show they have ever been to.

Not everybody sits around on their computers waiting for every little GNR moment. ?The set list is fine the way it is. ?I have been to 4 shows this year, and every shpw exceeds my every expectation. ?

I understand that you have an opinion, and I do respect that, but i think your opinion falls under the dead horse section.

Title: Re: Just got back from MSG
Post by: daviebuckethead on November 11, 2006, 08:09:25 AM
it dont see what difference it makes to the setlist issues.

anyone that plays in a band that plays gigs a lot knows that, you have songs in a certain order to have a certian impact on the crowd. best foot forward if you will.

for example you cant put wttj half way through, its just meant to be the opener. songs are in that order and the solo's come when they do because thats they way the band wants it, and they think hte songs flow better that way.

just because someone checks a setlist on the net everyday and it doesn't change a lot, doesn't give people the right to complain?!

if this was the 80's or very early 90's you would have no idea what sets GnR where playing in some places.

get over it. the people at MSG probably dont check setlists online vetday and had a great time.

Post by: 14 Yrs Of Silence on November 11, 2006, 08:20:37 AM
Everyone has to understand that this band is not going to change up their setlist significantly until CD is in our hands.  I think that getting to hear 4 out of 13 songs each not is not a bad deal.  And I'll guess that when CD arrives we'll eventually hear close to 8 or 9 songs.  Give it time.  GN'R will be back.  Not everyone is following the band around and their playing what the majority of the fans want to hear.  Everyone points out the fact that the new songs don't get nearly the same reaction as the old tunes.  So why the hell would they add even more new songs?

Title: Re: Just got back from MSG
Post by: axlsfury on November 11, 2006, 08:34:07 AM
Its all part of a greater marketing plan Mike.  They need to do this first so that they can move on to newer songs with the hardcore fans and casual fans supporting them.  It's also a way, in my opinion, to make people forget about the old band.  You hear the new bands versions of the old songs, they're fantastic and it makes people say "who needs the old band, this is great".  More buy in equals greater future success.  We may not like it, but we all know the next time GNR comes around to our town with newer material, we'll be there!

AXL'S "YOUTUBE-MYSPACE/MYTUBE-YOURSPACE" WAS FUNNY

RON'S ACE SOLO IS ACTUALLY THE CLOSING JAM OF "SHE"...THE MASTER REFERRED 2 HIIM AS A JOISEY BOY, BUT I THOUGHT HE REPPED STATEN ISLAND?

THE PYRO BOMBS SCARE ME...THEY'RE PRETTY EASY 2 ANTICIPATE, SO I WAS ABLE 2 BRACE MYSELF AND COVER MY EARS, BUT THE BASTARDS SNUCK ONE IN DURING "OUT 2 GET ME"

NOT COUNTING JUNGLE, SINCE IT'S THE OPENER AND ALWAYS A HIGHLITE, "CHINESE DEMOCRACY" WAS PROBABLY MY FAVORITE PERFORMANCE OF THE NIGHT

Was at the show.  They were awesome. Played witha ton of energy, the crowd was into it, the place was packed when GNR came on.  They played all the songs tight, totally awesome.  But I was disappointed with no TWAT, Rocket Quenn, or Civil War, or Madagascar.   No CD updates to everyones surprise.

Did anyone see the girl standing to the right of the stage from our view, she looked hot I didnt know who it was though?

I dont get the whining about the setlist. Jacksonville got the shortest setlist of the tour thus far, yet I had the best time of my life at a concert.

Though I kinda envy you guys that went to MSG. The NYC fans seem to always be that much more excited for GNR.

I don't know why people think Papa Roach sucked. You don't have to like their music, but there is no denying that they have a tight band. For a band with only one guitar, they have a really big sound. The lead singer's voice is also great. I thought the crowd was way into them too.

I'm recovered now - Was there last night -? I thought it was a strong show - I never had problems with Solos and things, but they went to Fink way too early and it killed the momentum - all of the Solos were really cool, but it basically sent people to their seats or for a beer . I thought IRS was hand-down the best performance of the night.

The Crowd was completely alive for the this show and was into it from start to finish

They should play like 10 more MSG gigs : ok:

I was at MSG last night too, at the railing on Robins side. Same spot i was at in 02. (Front Row at 2 GNR concerts!!!!!!) Enjoyed the opening much more this time (opening bands in 02 were eh.....). I never got to see Skid Row back in the day so this was a real treat. Something was off with Sabs mike though, I agree. Wanted to hear In a Darkened Room and Wasted Time but hey they did play Youth gone Wild, 18 and Life, and I Remember You. Also the new slow song they played was awesome too.

Papa Roach left me deaf...i still can't hear very well. This guy was on speed or something. I was never a fan...but have to agree they were doing a great job for what they do.

GNR....AWESOME...I don?t mind the setlist not changing much from 02, or Hammerstein....it's alright i love singing along to all the old stuff...can do it a 1000 more times! Robin was amazing as in '02, loved all the solos...however none topped Buckethead's solo....I am a bit disappointed that he is gone.

Axl was great, this time around looked a lot more comfortable on stage then in 02 or Hammerstein...I think he is almost ready to release the album. I really thought hey were going to Don't Cry after the solo...sux that that they didn't!. My fave was The Blues (Axl sounded particularly good on that one).

Overall an amazing show...worth spending $300 on Ga, Standing on my feet for six hours and listening to bf whine about how everything sux.

Rock on!

I was exactly where you were. Robin side, one row of people back. That was a crazy night.

Bach was really good, I didnt expect him to be that good at all because i hate the my michelle duet. He played like 13 songs then left. then papa roach came on and i didnt really care for them i thought they were very genetic, and there were these "metalheads" around me who were like moshing to papa roach. Who moshes to papa roach?

Around 11 10 the gunners went on and they were fantastic, I was so happy I had the floor. During Mr. Brownstone I nodded to Rich and he looked at me and was like "Fuck yeah", that was so cool. The Blues was like my favorite song of the night. My only complaint was I really couldnt hear axl that well until KOHD (6th song of the night) but Mr. Rose was fantastic. I thought it was better then Hammerstein. A really fun night.

I thought Papa Roach was really good actually.  Great energy.  Seemed really honored to be on the bill too, as they said before they wrapped up their set.  Although a friend of mine thought they were the worst band ever.  So, to each his own I guess.

Oh,man. What a night. Just woke up like 10 minutes ago. Last night was so freaking awesome! Got to the city around 2, went to Stitch to meet up with HTGTH people. Jarmo is AWESOME!!!!!!! Got to meet so many from the board, it was so cool!!!!  Made our way to the Garden at 7. Baz came on at 8. He was ok. I dunno, I guess I just wasn't ready yet, it was too early, lol. Papa Roach was actually pretty decent. Lots of energy. Guns came on at 11:15. HOLY CRAP! The lights go out, and the whole damned arena EXPLODES. The energy was just fantastic. Axl was spot on, the band was awesome. The whole night was so amazing. I'm just in awe. I mean damn. I had an incredible time last night. When the show was over, my husband and I went outside to see if we could spot anyone from the band. I don't remember what time it was when this all happened. Scott Ian from Anthrax came out with Baz. Ian didn't really stop to say hi, but Baz did for a couple of minutes. Then they piled into a van with some other people and took off. We waited some more, and eventually Bumblefoot came out. He's SO AWESOME! He hung around for a good half hour talking to the small group that was there. He was so cool. He shook everyone's hand, signed autographs, took pictures. BBF said he's looking foward to playing some new songs. So that led to the "when is the albom coming out". His first response was "pfffft". We all laughed. Then he went into the "any questions about the album must be directed to GNR management". So someone asked if he's contractulaly (sp?) bound to not answer, and he said "pretty much". So my husband spoke up and said "so your Axl bound". And BBF looked at my hubby, and winked. He was cool. He finally left, and then Frank came out. My husband shook his hand. It was a damned aweome night.

I just woke up too..(didn't get back to PA until 5 in the morning)

That show was just....wow.

I don't even know how to describe it. My seats were a bit farther back than I would have preferred, but still - GN'R brought it tonight, and NYC gave it right back. Like christina_rose said - as soon as the lights went down at 11:15, the crowd LOST it. I mean, they flipped right the fuck out! I'll keep it short and sweet, as all I'm going to be doing is echoing everyone else's comments, but yes, it was amazing, and I'd do it all over again if I could!

Got to meet so many of you at the pre-party, and you all kick ass as well! I'll get my picture developed later today and upload em!

I agree with the NY thing.  i am from Boston and the Boston crowds suck compared to NY.  I wasn't at MSG, but I went to 2 this may.  NY people are true rock fans.  Being from Boston that kills me to say.  But I must admit it.  Boston fans are assholes.

The intro to better  they have robins guitar too low in the mix now. And Chin Dem was to bassy. I actualy like IRS better live than the demo. I dont like the demo anymore, it bores me. I hope the album version is more like the live version

I Just woke up!  All I can say is that was an epic R & R show! Completely and utterly INSANE! I SOMEHOW FOUND MYSELF FRONTROW CENTER AT MSG!  How the fuck does that happen????  It was really hardcore being up there... a lot of pushing, shoving, and ass grabbing the whole time!  I found bruises on my body today. It was sooooo worth it though!  I love that Scott Ian came out and played with Baz! You have to love Baz's enthusiasm.  I have to say it folks: I'm officially a new fan of Papa Roach!  I'm telling you guys, they not only rocked, but they rock it hard!  Please watch them if you get a chance.  GNR brought down the house! Not going to repeat what everyone else is saying... but honestly, I'm still in shock and awe!!!!!!! One funny note: Robin decides to stage dive right in front of me and my girlfriend!  We are both 5'3 and 100 lbs. Our arms were shaking as we were trying to pass him back!  He did this twice to us!  It was so insane!  My friend and I were laughing so hard.  I look at her and said, "I'm sorry, am I hallucinating or is there a guitar player on our heads?"

The show rocked so hard I don't think it could ever be topped! :peace:

Here's my little review of last night's show:

Without a doubt, the best show of the tour.

The crowd was amazing. There was electicity in the air before the band came on. You could tell everybody was looking forward to the show and that they were there to have a good time.

It was so great, that I was afraid something would happen and it would all go wrong. But fortunately nothing went wrong and everybody there got to see a band who was having a great time on stage. Ron played a Kiss solo which Sebastian obviously noticed and he commented on it before My Michelle.

I believe Dizzy played Angie as his solo and Axl sang part of My Way before Paradise City.

I think we're in for an interesting tour from now on. It's like they put in a higher gear or something, and I suspect that the shows after this will be very cool. The same thing happened in Europe this past summer.

For people who were reading updates online and complaining about the show, you weren't there. You can't see the excitement on people's faces by reading updaes on a board. I'm sorry, but you just had to be there to get it.

Thanks to everybody who turned up at Stitch. Nice meeting you all!

I think that electricity is always there before GN'R comes on. ?The waiting in line, the days building up to the show, sitting through opening acts, it all builds you up to somethin big-Axl and the new GN'R. ?Which has been putting on a great show thus far.....

True, but this was in New York City at a sold out MSG.

It's a special place to play and see a concert.

As in past shows, he came down across the whole front row and let everyone touch his guitar, and I touched it with one hand and gave him the rocker sign ?:peace: with the other, and he winked at me and gave me the rocker sign back ?:peace: and said "yeah!" ?He and Robin truly play with their heart and soul! ?The show was soooo amazing!!!!! ?;D

Freakin' awesome show last night! ?Amazing band, amazing crowd! ?

Kudos to Axl for putting up such a great show as he obviously has a cold right now (see how many times he used a kleenex). ?

Robin starting WTTJ right at the edge of the stage in front of us.... Funny piece from Axl too when he said something about ?You tube - my space // My tube your space. He was looking where Baz was standing shaking hands and stuff right after My Michelle.

Also, for those on the right side of the stage, there are a couple of times when Axl came our way and picked up something from the floor, just behind the security guard. I couldn't tell what it was but it made him smile the first time and laugh the second. Anyone knows?

I thought Robin went crowd surfing with his guitar pretty far, or at least further than usual. Thought he wouldn't make it back but he did.

Axl picked up a black bra during one of the last songs and hang  it up on Robin's mike.

GNR @ MSG..... as he said, they'll be back and I can't wait for it

Good show - had trouble hearing Axl most of the time either b/c the crowd was so loud (which is kinda cool) or b/c I just had SHIT seats (section 311).  Most of it was due to the seats I think.  I think those on the floor / lower sections prob heard everything a lot better.

still a good show though - but nothing super spectacular, just a good show.  :peace:

Awesome Show, although I had a couple of qualms.

It seemed to be a lot more normal of a crowd than Continental, which was much more druggie based (I did see many people breaking the smoking rule though). I sat in Section 96 which gave me a very good view.

Bach was much better then I expected. I didn't expect much though. I was getting really into it at the end. I loved seeing Scott Ian

Papa Roach, I spent some of the time walking around. They did sound really good their last couple of songs.

GNR was excellent. The sound was a little off in the beginning, but I think some of that was due to all of the fans singing along! I actually heard a sizable group singing along to IRS and Better. IRS was probably the best performance I've ever seen of the song! Despite this, I left very disapointed that I did not hear any more new songs or perhaps even Madagascar. IT IS THE MECCA OF ENTERTAINMENT AND YOU SHOULD BRING YOUR BIG GUNS!

To the contrary of what many think, I thought all the guitar solos were overboard, I would have much rather heard a new song or an Illusion song instead of 3 minutes longer then the solos had to be.

All in all though, I loved the experience and seeing all my fellow gunners. Keep the Faith!

there were boxes of tissues stashed at various places on the stage, and yeah, he would go around and grab one to blow his nose. probably has a cold.

the guitar solos are necessary so axl can take breaks between songs. anyone that sings in a band knows that after 30 to 40 minutes, you need some sort of break to recoup.

also, i noticed people asking about the dedications to someone named micky and joey. mickey rourke, who axl has called his biggest fan, had a half brother named joey who died of lung cancer in oct. 2004.

Just got back from the Big Apple....I'll throw my two cents in.

I thought the night was doomed right off the bat.......not 2 minutes into Baz's first song and he had someone kicked out for something. ?Then he had a few minor sound problems, but pulled it out. ?I really enjoyed the one new song that sounded a bit like "I Remember You." ?Baz kicked ass though.

Papa Roach was okay...I forgot about a lot of those songs like "Broken Home." ?They had the coolest backdrop going for them though...the skeleton with the crown of thorns and wings.

Then came GNR...and before 11:30 too! Totally kickass show...sound was on point all night. ?Robin's blues solo he did with Frank really kicked ass and he nailed SCOM. ?The crowd was really into the solos tonight.....I think the Blues is really the only song that really didn't get much crowd reaction. ?As said before there was a decent group of people singing especially along to Better. ?IRS live blew me away. ?It was soooooo much harder than the demo and Axl's vocals were amazing. ?I couldn't have been happier with the night. ?Kudos to Robin for putting on an amazing show...He was the highlight of the night for me. ?Thanks to Red1 for hooking me up with a kickass seat (dead center, right in front of the mixing boards behind the GA section, got a perfect view of everything), thanks to all the naked girls at the steakhouse cabaret who made 3 AM in NYC interesting, and thanks to New Fuckin' York!

PS....Retox was garbage....nothing going on there and it's located like in an impound lot. ?

yes, mickey and joey were the names, he said "mickey this one is for joey" right before knocking on heavens door, then at the end of the show he said "mickey, this show is dedicated to joey".

i explained who mickey and joey are about six comments above.

Damn what a night. ?Somehow, I ended up front row, on the Bubmblefoot/Robin side of the stage. ? I've read the reviews so far and agree, it was KICKASS. ?

In regards to the Myspace thing that Axl said. ?Bach mentions Youtube and Myspace in his set, refering to his crotch as his "Tube". ?Axl said "I would much prefer to watch MyTube in HerSpace" ?Think about it ;) :hihi:

This is the sixth time I've seen this band THIS YEAR. ?I'm so not tired of the set list lol. ?I can anticipate what's gonna come on and get revved up for it. ?And alot of it is a surprise because...well...I kinda lose my mind at a GNR show and forget the order :hihi:

This time I was able to keep my head a bit more and was able to see alot more. ?For instance, while Axl was introducing Richard Fortus, I could see Robin on his side of the stage without his guitar, dancing to the jam. ?He looked like string puppet, with his legs going all wobbly and spinning around....damn that guy is high ?I LOVE IT!

I've also noticed that after his solo, Robin takes off his guitar and lays it down on stage carefully...he puts it to bed :) how cute lol

Frank is a madman and SSSSOOOO into it. ?He's basically one of us rabid fans who can play with his favorite band. ?During the final bow, or right before it, he came to my side of the stage and knelt, kissed the stage and pounded it with his hand inutter joy ;D ?During Robins solo, he's sitting at his drums, watching Robin with complete fascination and leaning over to watch him, it's awesome to watch lol

I'll remember more and post more later. ?The landlord decided TODAY was a good day to have roofers outside my window all day. ?I may have to hit the man.

Something to the effect of "We love you all, thank you, we can't wait to come back play for all of you again. Thank you very much, goodnight."

The girl was probably Sacha, Axl's girlfriend.

IRS blew me away aswell in Paris. Too bad 99% of the arena didn't know that song and just sat down (but it was very late by the time IRS was played in the set).

THIS SONG IS GENIOUS.

The Live version trully is a masterpiece. Almost as good as Welcome To The Jungle, really. One of the best Rock song I have ever heard over the last decade, if not the best (with some Oasis songs).

great to read the reviews and glad you all enjoyed the show.

the thing that makes me happy is a lot of people saying that their highlight of the show was a new song. either chinese democracy or irs or better, and people say that they regret not hearing madagascar. so, i guess the new songs will become the crowd favourites once the album is out. and that sounds great

Probably Baz and his drinking/partying crew. That was just one of the little things he said. ?I think he also called Ron a "Joi-sey Boy" (Making fun of New Jersey's accent) when he introduced him. ?

Yeah, all of his little speeches were word for word the same as Worcester on Wednesday. ?I guess it's his way of introducing his songs? ?

I felt bad for him, the place was only about 1/4 full when he was on stage. ?He said that Broadway shows were louder then MSG and said we couldn't even be as loud as 80 yr old women :hihi:

What about how Baz said the exact same thing word for word as he did at the Jersey show about how he stopped drinking on show "Super Group" and fuck uncle Ted, can't a guy have a few glasses of wine with dinner!"

I loved hearing that shit in Jersey, but shocked he said the exact same thing in nyc.? I'm a huge Baz fan, but change up the smack, dude!

yep and he said the same thing in hartford ct on wed when he played here...

The place was getting really full towards the end of his set, though.  Yeah, maybe he doesn't realize we travel around and go to more than one show.  He still rocks in my book! ,

I knew I'd remember more things!!

At the end of one song (can't remember which one at the moment) Axl held a scream for something like a full minute.  It was amazing!

Axl held quite a few looooong notes last night, and after each one, the crowd went crazy. i think you're thinking of Patience....?

the one he held during IRS, going into the solo, was sick. IRS over-all was just crazy, but that note really got the crowd screaming.

its a testament to just how HUGE guns n roses, and axl rose specifically, are. the crowd sang along to like 90% of the songs, and i mean they (we) were LOUD. everywhere you turned, people were dancing, rocking out....GNR and NYC jusy mesh very well.

I didn't "just get back, but I sure as hell did "just recover".

Before I start with how the concert affected me, I'll say that I am a 20-plus year veteran of attending rock concerts.  i've seen everybody from Ozzy to Van Halen to Ted Nugent to Alice Cooper to Rush to ACDC, etc.  This was 7th time going to see GNR.

This was the best all around show I've ever been to.

Highlgihts:
- Best crowd I have ever been a part of.  That was the most singing I myself ever did and it was because the crowd sang entusiastically to every GNR classic.

- IRS and Chinese Democracy sounded tighter than any version I've heard including the IRS leak and any soundboard version of CD.  They absolutely nailed those songs.  I'm now even more psyched to hear the final versions.

- The video footage above the band on the screens was wild.  Especially during CD.

- I have wanted to see GNR replace LALD & KOHD in the setlist for awhile now.  After last night LALD can stay.  That was the best live performance of LALD that I witnessed.  And KOHD is such a "crowd involving" song that it can stay as well as far as I'm concerned.

- WTTJ, ISO & Mr. B were fucking amazing.  The best opening I've witnessed.

- Used To Love Her was amazing.  Everytime I saw it in the setlist, I thought "eh, boring".  NOW, I hope they play it every show I go to.

- Axl's voice was incredible.  He held notes like never before.

- The solos were much needed for me.  I needed to sit the fuck down once in awhile and stop singing.  Well, except for Ron's Don't Cry.  I LOVED how everyone sang over his solo.  If it weren't for the solos I would have faded out by My Michelle and would have had nothing left for Patience, Nightrain and the encore.

- All solos were amazing.  Richard was most impressive.  I don't remember him doing much of a solo at the first Hammerstein show.  He's in my top 5 now.

Nothing negative will come out of me regarding this band.  The best rock show on the planet.

Just to remain objective, I thought Sweet Child O' Mine was a little off.  But that's it.

Does anyone know what Robin was playing during his first solo where Frank played drums over his playing?  It sounded familiar to me.

I was there last night as well.  Axl sounded, for the most part, great.  The new songs are kick ass live and are going to be instant classics once released.  The solos definitley lost some of the crowd for a bit.  THe band was tight as hell.  They need to cut out some of these solos, it really does halt the momentum.  Regardless, Axl and the boys put on a really great show and anyone that was not blown away is either dillusional or unable to let go of the past.  I was in section 339 and loved all of it.

Great show. Second time this week seeing them and I already want to go to another show. Please come back around here. I wont really say much about it since mostly everything has been said already. But one of my favorite things was when Axl commented on Sebastian talking about Youtube and Myspace.

He goes" Sebastian I heard you talking about Youtube and Myspace earlier, and all I want to say is I want to stick my tube in her space."

It was so funny. I love Axl's jokes. I swear he could be a comedien if he wanted to.

This was a showcase gig and rather than choosing the path of announcements/new songs etc that some people (including me) predicted, Axl chose the better route of playing a show that was tight as hell. Hammerstein 4 was a kind of, fuck it, here's Izzy and we're going to play all night show - and it was great, but MSG was the gig to show the world that GNR is still among the very best live acts ever. The energy level never dropped, the solos were way better than in May, it didn't really feel like Axl was taking long breaks and it flowed beautifully. Truly a great show, and I'm in awe to have witnessed it.

Lots of highlights, but I just want to give a shout out to Ron Thal. Great guitar player and great guy from all accounts, how cool was it to see him soak up the applause from a packed MSG (and the kudos from Seb Bach) after getting the whole crowd to sing Don't Cry.

YEAH, THERE WAS A GUY BAWLING HIS EYES OUT IN THE BATHROOM DURING DIZZY'S PIANO SOLO...AND A GUY ARGUING LIKE CRAZY WITH HIS GF 4 HALF THE NIGHT, I THINK THEY MISSED MOST OF THE SHOW CAUSE THEY WERE FIGHTING SO MUCH

My own mini-review:

Fucking great show. I was hoping for some setlist suprises (as we always are) but seeing as how this is my first GNR show ever it didnt bother me too much. A couple of points (a good chunk of NR and another song) Axl was being drowned out, but otherwise sound was great.

I was in GA, came in at about 10:05-10:10, by the end of the show I was no more then 5 rows back, dead center. It was great whenever I heard someone else doing some die hard stuff too, like singing to the new songs, saying "Ok Nevermind!" during The Blues, "Bullshit!" during Patience, etc. I found myself digging the solos, and as someone else said they were in a way a welcome break, especially if your job you have to go to the next day requires the use of your voice. If anyone is wondering I was the tall guy in black with the short guy who was doing a lot of hippyish dancing. I was yelling a lot about how I worshipped Axl as Christ, and would kill people for him. This kind of passion is only stirred in me by a select few artists brahs...

Other things of note: Saw someone towards the back of GA get hit by a piece of pyro shrapnel, he seemed ok though. There was some kind of fight to my right, and it looked like somebody got KTFO as they were lying on the floor for a good little while after what seemed to be a short scuffle. A mosh pit broke out at the beginning of Paradise City but security broke it up.

My friend doesnt even own a GNR cd or "even care about GNR" before the show, but said this was one of the best shows he has ever been to (and he's been to a TON of shows), so I made another convert.

In closing: Great conert, great one of a kind experience. Thanks to everyone that was there for making it such a cool experience.

I just read this review somewhere else, its long but check it out!!!

>>>>>>>>>>

Well last night has got to rank as one of the most surreal, exhilarating, and frustrating nights of my life. My old concert going partner George cruised up from Philly and we hit the road for MSG. I just couldn't believe I was actually on my way to a Guns n' Roses concert. It didn't seem real. This was a chapter of my life that I thought had been concluded long ago. No matter how much I love The Rolling Stones, no matter how much you think I love The Black Crowes, nothing can compare to the absolute mad dog fanatical love I had for Guns n' Roses in the early 1990's. If you put a gun to my head and ask me for my favorite band ever, Gn'R would be the only honest response. I didn't even get in on the ground floor. When Appetite came out in 1987 I was 13 and had just gotten into music seriously for the first time. I was in a pretentious "it has to be from the 60's or it sucks" phase, and all I pretty much listened to was Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones. I remember sleeping over at a friend's house and watching Headbanger's Ball on MTV. Everyone was so pumped for the Gn'R videos and I couldn't have cared less. I lumped them in with all the other hair/metal bands and didn't notice anything that made them stand apart. Flash forward to early 1991 and I'm lying on my couch one night when the video for Patience comes on. I suddenly realized this band wasn't too different from The Stones. I just fell in love with the song. I got the Gn'R Lies cd from my girlfriend whose parents wouldn't let her keep her copy cause of the flap and I played songs 4-8 till I had them memorized. I must have listened to Patience and Used To Love Her 100 times a day. Eventually I discovered the greatness of the live tracks as well, especially their blistering, putting Aerosmith to shame cover of Mama Kin. I soon ran out and bought Appetite and memorized that disc as well. I'd walk around all day with Rocket Queen going through my head. That summer You Could Be Mine was all over the radio and I was holding my breath for the new Illusion records. Gn'R may have had fans as crazy as me (and clearly Summer Romance here qualifies) but they sure as shit didn't have any crazier. I ate, slept and drank that band. On September 17, 1991 (a date which will never leave my brain) I had my mom pick me up for lunch so I could go to CD World to buy Use Your Illusion I and II. I don't think I listened to anything else for six months. They were everything I hoped for and more. As I type this the boxes (remember when cds came in boxes?) are 2 feet away from me under my stereo record player. I even bought them on tape for my car, and I also bought them on vinyl. Oh how I love my vinyl copies of Use Your Illusion. (By the way, both I and II are double records in and of themselves.) When my friend called that November to tell me his dad had scored MSG tickets for December 11th I almost died from the extreme joy. The concert that night is still bar none the best I have ever seen. The following summer I set a land speed world record when I made it from my friend's upstairs bedroom to my car on the street in 4.5 seconds after reading in the paper that the local ticketmaster outlet was giving away wristbands for a second Gn'R/Metallica show at Giants Stadium. Both those shows were great and I continued to follow Gn'R until it was apparent they existed only in theory, and that Axl had gone from half crazy to totally fucking nuts. I eventually gave up on them and by the late 90's The Crowes and Stones were my two bands. I got slightly excited when the live album came out and they started playing some shows, but it was tempered by the fact that Axl was the only one left and the new album still had not been released. Then in December 2002 they fucked me by not showing up in Philly. It just seemed over for me and Gn'R, until George called two days ago with a ticket and I found myself on the way to the show last night. Surreal is the only word.

Continued.......
>>>>>>>

George and I went to Stout's, where I met several Gassers before the 1/18 MSG Stones show, and had a Guinness and a burger before heading to out seats. Let me tell you, Gn'R can still bring out the hot chicks like no other band. We sat down just in time for Papa Roach. (We missed Sebastian Bach as the first opener.) I don't know shit about Papa Roach, but they were a hard rocking band and for an opening act they were surprisingly tolerable. We were in the third level on the side of the stage and the sound and the view were both great. Papa Roach's set flew by and the roadies got the stage ready for Gn'R. Soon Robin Finck came out (looking suspiciously like Slash) and played the opening chords to WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE.
Axl hit the stage and the show was under way. Just seeing him in the flesh again was a trip. I soon realized though that the sound, which had been perfect when Papa Roach was playing, had taken a horrifying turn for the worse. Axl's vocals were fading in and out, something that would be a problem for most of the evening. The drums were very low in the mix, and sometimes even the guitars would sound low, although on the whole the guitar sound was great. These sound problems really detracted from our ability to enjoy what was clearly a great show. Axl was in fine vocal form, and all three guitar players were phenomenal. Dizzy Reed, the only other (semi) original Gunner left, was also great on keyboards. The sound was certainly decent enough for us to hear the songs, but it could have been so much better. Axl's voice would come through clear on one song and be very low the next. Sometimes this problem would occur within the same song, or same line even!
They ran through three Appetite tunes to start, playing IT'S SO EASY and MR. BROWNSTONE in spots 2 and 3. The fourth song was Live AND LET DIE. Never understood why they recorded this, never understood why they played it live, never understood how it became a hit, still don't understand why they continue to play it. Next up was a Robin Finck guitar solo. Let me tell you, that motherfucker can play! His solo wasn't boring for a second and I really enjoyed it. When it was over he began Sweet Child O' Mine and of course the crowd went apeshit. The band was in fine form and Axl hit all the notes. I won't argue with people who say the band shouldn't be called Gn'R, but whatever you call them they're fucking great. Next up was their kick ass cover of KNOCKIN' ON HEAVEN'S DOOR, a real highlight. A great mellow vibe and the crowd participation is always fun. YOU COULD BE MINE followed and it fucking rocked. Too bad Axl's vocals continued to be a problem. I don't know if any other part of MSG had this problem, but we sure did.
Next up was Dizzy Reed's piano solo, which was basically an instrumental version of ANGIE! It was absolutely gorgeous, he could have played for an hour and I would have been happy. The crowd even got into it and started singing the words. It was great to hear this song on a real piano. I sure wish it sounded this good when The Stones played it. The piano came through loud and clear and it was just a magical moment. I love how Gn'R and The Crowes always manage to give me Stones treats. Next up were two new songs that are destined to be classics if the fucking album ever gets released, THE BLUES and BETTER. They were just amazing songs. The Blues is a slower, power ballad (in a good way) type of tune, and Better was a more of a rocker. They fit in perfectly with the older material and are proof positive that Axl was the real creative force behind the band. (I haven't heard a single new song that hasn't been amazing, unlike the bulk of every other Gunner's solo material. Yes, even Izzy's.) Richard Fortus' guitar solo was also very cool and then the band played a blistering version of OUT TO GET ME. Finally Axl sat behind the piano and we got a beautiful rendition of NOVEMBER RAIN. The sound, including his vocal, was perfect on this one and it really took me back in time. I'm bummed the way they seem to favor the Appetite material over the Illusion stuff, but at least we got this one. One of the highlights. Next up was Bumblefoot?s guitar solo, which may have been my favorite piece of music of the night. It was simply an instrumental of DON?T CRY, but he made it sound incredibly heartbreaking. I can?t even say I missed the vocal cause this guy was saying it all with his guitar. Yet another moment that could have gone on forever as far as I was concerned. It was breathtaking musicianship and the embodiment of why anyone loves music. Never thought some dude named Bumblefoot could give me chills.
Sebastian Bach came out for MY MICHELLE and he and Axl traded lines. All of a sudden Axl?s vocal was totally clear and Bach?s was fading in and out. Axl would sing one line with total clarity and next one by Bach would be inaudible. Strange and very frustrating. At least Axl had a good mic at this point. Another classic new song, IRS, was next. A balls to the wall rocker and I loved it. God damn when will this record come out?!? After that was another highlight for me, my original favorite Gn?R tune PATIENCE. Axl can still whistle with the best of them, and his vocal came through perfect. The whole audience was singing with him and it just brought back so many memories. That song alone was worth the price of admission. They wrapped it up with a kick ass NIGHTRAIN and left the stage. The encore had two songs. CHINESE DEMOCRACY was yet another great new tune, and PARADISE CITY sounded as good as it ever did. Axl said a long goodbye and the show was over.
Closing thoughts: 1. This band is on fire and is lacking nothing in terms of ability. All three guitar players are phenoms and all delivered when soloing. Axl is in top form and seemed to really enjoy himself. I was amazed at how normal and at ease he seemed. I hope he can maintain this frame of mind and give us a second act to his career. I never would have thought it possible, but hopefully the guy will go on making records and performing live for a long time to come. Hey, if Brian Wilson can do it, anyone can. 2.The sound was sub par and someone should be fired. It was clearly a great show but it was hard to enjoy as much as it should have been. 3. It was pure joy seeing Axl again and hearing the old (and new) tunes. Got to recapture a bit of my youth. 4. It wasn?t, I have to admit, Guns n? Roses. I really don?t care what they call it (What?s in a name? Although it is more fun to say you?re going to a Gn?R show than an Axl Rose show) and my experience would have been the same, but George had never seen Guns n? Roses before and I could tell by the look on his face that afterwards he still felt the same. That?s all the proof I need. He had fun, but I could tell the Gn?R monkey was still on his back. Not until a reunion of the whole band will he be able to say he saw them. That doesn?t mean the band wasn?t great, it just wasn?t Guns n? Roses. 5. Chinese Democracy will be a masterpiece and all those who doubted Axl will be forced to admit he was the man behind the curtain.

Well i am still speechless about this show after some hassles with tickets we got GA we entered as bach was playin & gradualy got towards the front during the sets. In the end i was 2nd row just behind sexkitten who was rockin out so hard. Axl was amazin you could see him smiling during the songs because of the crowd. Robins crowd surf was on top of me and i played bumbles guitar on Paradise.

I thought they all were on ball.  Everytime they did alittle band jam, I thought it would turn into a new unheard song.  I thought the band played tight as hell.

The security was like slim to none, I opened my bag but I don't even think the guy looked in.  I had my camera stuck in the back of my pants which was kind of uncomfortable but they certainly weren't looking back there.  Now I have to get the pics developed because I have no freakin' clue what is on there.  I was a tad trashed!

Yea, that was the beginning of the end for me.  I know before I left Stitch for the show I did a little interview with the Talking Metal guys who were really cool, I know I have a pic of me and them on my camera.  I shall have to get these pics developed tomorrow to see what other fun stuff is on there! :hihi:

You folks that came from overseas, well, I hope you enjoyed your visit to our city-it was very nice to meet you all!  Come back again soon!

Jarmo posted that Axl played "my way"?? Is that the song by Frank Sinatra?? " the end is here"-" I did it my way"...

Anybody know?

lol Yeah, he sang that right before Paradise City.  Something like I feel like the end is near.  The band didn't play it, Axl just sang a little lyric from it.

It was an awesome show.

I was with my girlfriend, sitting in section 89, and I saw two people wearing HTGTH shirts on the floor, and I kept pointing them out to her, saying "those are my internet buddies!  That's my site!"   :hihi:

I think she thought I was slightly insane.

Jarmo is in the second picture, third person from the left with the cute curly hair, nice smile and glasses.  Very nice gent, had the pleasure of meeting him myself this year at Rio!!

Glad everyone had a great time at the show.  Next time I hope to meet more of you.

Still cool as hell to be in the same room as Axl Rose even if I can't con myself into thinking that that was GNR that I saw the other night.  It just isn't (for me) but we still had a good time anyway.

Don't hate me for saying this becasue I am well aware of the opinions on this board, but after the show the entire bar I was at was saying the same thing and I feel this way too.  Was wondering if any of you do as well:

"Imagine the electricity in MSG if it was the real GNR. Just imagine. The place wouldn't even be standing anymore."

Its funny to think Jarmo, Younggunner and I were all in the same building.

It was a really good show.  Its hard to compare to the May 12th one, but the band sounded good.  The highlight, for me, might have been Ron Thals "Dont Cry" solo.  Watching a full Madison Square Garden sing along to the entire song was pretty special.  "Live & Let Die" was great.  So was "You Could Be Mine."  Maybe its due to his current low-profile, but I missed Slash a bit, particularly during these songs (and "November Rain").  Dont construe this as whining or reunion wishing, just a simple feeling I got during a handful of songs, a feeling I didnt get at the May 12th show.  The band did a great job as usual.  Fortus was just virtually flawless and the other guys were great.  Axl also did a great job as usual.

Madison Square Garden attracts a more mainstream crowd, as opposed to a small venue like the Hammerstein which drew a large number of fans through message board presales, so while a lot of the Hammerstein fans sang along to the new songs, the MSG fans werent that into them and the momentum stalled a bit.  Thats obviously just a symptom of no album, and is just one more reason to not include more unheard songs until the albums out.  But Im very happy to see this band performing well on a successful tour with an album on the way.

one of these days we have to meet Booker. Its good to see you have a little more of a positive vibe over the past yr or so. GLad your enjoying the band and what they have to offer....

im also glad the days of long, quote filled arguments are long gone lol

Im sure the new album will spark some debate though.... ;)

Im glad theres a reason to be positive, which wasnt really the case for awhile.

The album sparking debate is a safe bet.

It seems unreal being back at the office after three fantastic days in NY. God, I love that city!

With all the reviews on this thread I have nothing more to add. Great show. Madison Square Garden, Guns N' Roses, second row on the pit... it doesn't get better than that.

It was nice meeting some of you guys at Stitch? : ok:
