Title: So Fine Discussion
Post by: CAFC Nick on November 05, 2006, 09:48:00 AM
I heard this song the entire way through for the first time the other day. It was the live version on Kerrangs 10 most awesome GN'R vids.

I actually quite liked it. I listened to the UYI version and thought this was actually a pretty decent song.

I started this topic because I noticed a lot of people bash this song and say its rubbish. Just wondering what everyone's view on this song is?

The guitar work also reminds me of the Fall to Pieces opening.

It has my favourite Guns N' Roses solo!! It's simple yet so full of emotion..like classical music! What live vid was it? was it from the tokyo DVD?

actually i think it's a very good song, i can't understand why most people seem to dislike it ???

"It's a story of a man
Who works as hard as he can
Just to be a man who stands on his own
But the book always burns
As the story takes it turn
An leaves a broken man"

I love it.
Its one of my favorite illusion songs.
I dont see why people think of it as a filler.
I find it an avesom intro to the estranged.

also I've always loved duff songs, and his vocals on this one are great!

but than again, I dont like "coma", what seems to be a sin in GNR fans world...

It's better when Axl sings it... Not to insult anyway, but I think Duff is a horrible singer...

It's a good song.  I like it.  Although there aren't many GNR songs I can say I don't like.   Silkworms and Rhyiad I'm not too fond of.

I agree, I love Duff when he sings the background vocals, and plays his base, but I'll have to agree, he doesn't do it for me when it comes to his singing. :(  So I definately take the video of it on the Illusions dvd, over the recording for the album, when Duff is singing.

Yeah, Duff shouldn't be allowed to sing. He always sounds drunk...just let him play his bass. I really just don't like his singing on the song.

It's a song, smartass.

But yeah So Fine is ok. It starts out a love song but it's dedicated to Johnny Thunders. Seems odd. It seems like two different songs stuck together really. The lyrical contect is totally different in both. I always assumed it was a song Axl wrote combined with a song Duff wrote. Like they just put the two together. But apparently Duff wrote all of it. Strange arrangement. Nothing great by GnR's standard, but it's probably one for the girls to like.

I'm not a fan - Duff's thing for Johnny Thunders was just odd (dedicating two songs to him?), and the lyrics and vocals were really quite bad.

Good song.  I think I probably like the live versions a little better with both Axl and Duff singing. Plus, it's dedicated to Johnny Thunders and Johnny is a legend.  It doesn't really seem odd to me why Duff dedicated it to Johnny, like the person above states. It may be a dedication but it's more for the reason being that 'So Fine' is a Johnny Thunders type of song. I'm sure his music was a huge inspiration behind the writing of 'So Fine.' Johnny Thunders died in April of 1991 and that could be another reason for the dedication.

I've never understood why so many are anti-So Fine. I certaintly don't think it's one of the top-classics, but it's a great little small ballad, that really is underrated. For GN'R, it's a lower-ranked song. Yet for any other band, So Fine would be a top-release single.

I love Duff's vocals on it (even tho he can't sing, lol). But having Axl also join him, it almost gives it a rock legitimacy, but with Duff's vocals, it almost sounds like a punk love song. The song is very smooth, and has very relaxing guitar work.

It's good song, and a nice lead-in to Estranged on UYI II.

I know what he means. I mean the demo is awesome, and is much more cut down and almost Nirvana-sounding.

But I still don't think the epic & overproduced one that made the album isn't a disappointment by any means. Both the original & alternate both kicked ass!

What I think I like about this song the most is the guitar work at the beginning accompanied by piano.

The guitar riff is so relaxing and its a nice intracate piece of song-writing. I find this side to rock 'n' roll much more appealing than the boring power chords in songs nowadays.

I used to really love the song.  It is still good on occasion when I am in the mood.  Duff  doesn't have a great voice by most standards but I always liked it.  It's good for some things like on the Neurotic Outsiders I thought he sounded awesome.  Anyway, it's a good song and it is kinda sad when you watch the UYI Dvds and you see the interaction between Axl and Duff during teh "My friends always come through for me part".

There's definately some homo erotic subtones to his appreciation for J.Thunders :hihi:

And it's not just that, look at some of the vests and shit he wore during the Illusion tour. Totally gay. And we all know about Adlers past activities. Even Axl hasn't had a steady woman for 10 years.

The pieces are coming together now, and I don't like it

So Fine is a good tune, but it's one of those songs that lack the Guns N' Roses feel, and that hurts it. Alot better live than on record, but still a little simplistic melody and structure wise. Borderlines pop at times.

When it comes to Duffs singing, I don't have any problem with it. It's rock n' roll, not Mariah Carey.

Yes..but...They hardly saw eachother on the road back then...Maybe they were friends to the point that they respected eachother..But the thing in the Tokyo-vid is just a way for the fans to scream..The illusion-tour wasn?t Axl best..When it came to please the fans  ;)..I don?t think Duff liked that as the others didn?t

When Axl started distancing himself away from the band in the early-90's, I definitely won't disagree that had a large effect in how they felt with each other as band mates. It seemed after 1990, that Axl no longer did interviews or anything public related to Guns N' Roses.

Anytime there were interviews or documentaries, it was primarily in the UYI-era, always represented by Slash, Duff, Gilby & Matt. Other than the 1992 VMA's, I can't remember them being on-screen with each other on anything other than the videos themselves and the live shows.

its actually one of my fav GnR songs. Love Duff's parts, you dont need to have a perfect voice to be a good singer...Duffs voice sounds great & you can feel the emotion flowing through him? ::)
