In my recent viewing of Mygnr.com, i know i dont like it either, somebody posted this i thought it was interesting, so i thought i would relay it for discussion here.? :smoking:

I WENT INTO SUNRISE RECORDS JUST TO ASK IF THERE WERE GONNA GET IT AND THE GIRL AT THE COUNTER SAID YES THE ALBUM WILL BE IN OUR STORE DECEMBER 5TH

SO I PUT MY NAME DOWN FOR MY COPY. lol




she even said that this date is for sure because there are gonna be setting up all the ads for it around the store and everything so this sounds promising.

I take with a grain of salt as well, but the poster has been a member there a long time. I really dont think the release date will come from somebody just walking in the record store and asking for it, but you never know.  :smoking:

I think it will be either November 28th, or December 5th.
Before: too much competition (U2, Jay-Z, Oasis etc...)
After: too late, the market and the sales will decrease.

Dec 5th sounds cool...that leaves a few weeks prior for a single to do it's stuff... was starting to think there would be no single.......I hope the packaging is cool...maybe free dvd  :peace:

there IS an obvious competition. Both GNR and Jay Z are big names, and its possible teens and others would be interested in both. Yes I know, GNR "rockers" liking rap, its the new thing, like what's cool. December 5th is cool.

A chap posted in my guestbook stating that his local Music Zone in Wigan has confirmed that Chinese Democracy will be released on November 13th - but that aint a Tuesday :-\ and this is music zone we're talking about :-\, looks like loads of dates are going to come up in the next few weeks. Thanks to Scotty D for this info.

I belive the dec 5th makes sense only because that gives roughly a month for promotion. With everything thats going on, those things being released to early, if the band wants to do a month of promotion, a dec 5th date makes sense. Was there another thread regarding release dates?? I really couldn't find, if so, feel free to merge it with that one. ?:smoking:

yea, i've always had a feeling it would be 28 november, just cause it's right after thanksgiving and gives time for promition, etc. ? and then people can talk it up at thanksgiving to all the relatives, tell them they want it for xmas, etc.

I hope I get at least two weeks prior notice, for two reasons

1. I wanna build up to the release, some foreplay if you like
2. So I can book a day off to play the album with my mates and get hammered

not that i would agree with this. ?But what if they did scattered releases just to create a buzz. It would kill the charting of the album, but i would be lots of fun finding the album

The competition is not just in record sales. It's in the media and press too. If they came out at the same time, there would be a big competition within the media to see who gets more coverage, etc. Think bigger picture.

I was just about to mention different release dates, but that would be retarded. If like Utah got CD before me in Indiana, I would piss myself. I know it won't happen cause of all the leaking that would happen, no1 would have to buy it anywhere else haha

Yeah it would be dumb, but I was just think along the lines of the hype xbox got when everyone wanted it but couldnt get it.  Maybe Walmart has a few copies on such and such date, Best buy on another....aint gonna happen, but it would be fun to be the one ot get a copy 1st...

Eminem is only on like on song of that album. Its not an "Eminem" album, he just produced it. Its just a bunch of up and coming rappers he signed to his label, wont really be any competition there.

I called Best Buy (a large store here) and asked when Chinese Decmocracy was going to be in the store.  The guy started laughing.  He did however check the computer to see if they had a "street date" for the CD and he said that they showed nothing yet.  He will however buy the CD when it comes.

I'm from Victoria, B.C., Canada and I just phoned up my local HMV and they had nothing in their computer for CD. The assclown asked me if Chinese Democracy was a movie. How can you work at a music store and not know Chinese Democracy?

I really hope that December 5th is not the date.  I'll be in South Africa then and will miss out.  Does anyone know how releases are handled?  Will CD be released on the same date in other countries as it is in the United States, or am I going to have to wait until I get back?  I only ask because I am going to be there for most of the winter and REALLY don't want to miss out and have to wait until I return to the states.

if you will be gone when it does come out you should just have someone get it and mail it out to you. im gonna be doing that for at least one of my friends!

december 5th would be perfect......

The problem is I'm only going to be gone for about a month, from Thanksgiving to Christmas basically.  I think if someone mailed it to me I'd get it sooner if I waited until I got back.  I also don't count on having any reliable internet connection to buy a digital copy of the album to hold me over until I get back.

my man merck said that they may not even announce a release date, "you may just walk into your local record store and find it there."  take that as you will, but fuck me freddy everyone fall for this and go to the stores.

This will be the last GN'R album. That would be financial & career suicide to be a band of this stature and have an album like this, and simply put it in stores with no promotion.

That's never gonna happen. Why would they opt to INTENTIONALLY make less money on this? Makes no sense, unless the album isn't that successful, and you make more money off of it, because you saved money on publicity/promo.

Hopefully early November.  December 5 wouldn't be bad at all though, would still hit #1.

AFD had no promotion, and look how much money that made. A lot of times you can make more money by laying low and building up steam rather than having a big advertising campaign that gets you big first week sales and then nothing after that. Titanic is another example of how you can make more by spreading out the sales and keeping it around longer.

AFD was also a flop initially.

AFD was one of those albums that started slow, and gradually got better and better.

But it wasn't because they CHOSE no promotion, it's because NO ONE would promote them. They were considered sleazy. Hell, David Geffen had to ask MTV as a personal favor to him, if they'd play the WTTJ video, and they did, and even when they played it the first time, it was like 5am in the morning, when they figured no one was watching.

Titanic? I don't get that analogy. Titanic was a huge smash when it was first released, and stayed on top to become the most successful film of all time.

I don't see why a band whould CHOOSE to make less money. This isn't 1987, this isn't GN'R trying to kickstart a career. They are already an established franchise of a band. Publicity does nothing but milk the cash cow that's already dripping.

A bunch of publicity makes it fizzle out fast. If you sell two million copies the first week people are talking about it for a week and that's it sales dry up after a couple weeks and it disappears. If you have no promotion and sell 500k a week, you keep people talking about and end up with a bunch of free promotion.

I wasn't talking about the Titanic DVD, I was talking about the movie. If I remember right that started off slow and continued at a mediocre pace for a long time. Star Wars and Spiderman 2 both had HUGE opening weekends and then fell off a cliff despite excellent reviews.

Actually I'm pretty sure spiderman had a few phenomenal weekends. I'm pretty sure its second and third weeks were the best second and third weeks of a movie ever...or at least its up there. I don't feel like checking box office mojo right now.

I know what you were talking about. Titanic cost $200mil to make. It's opening weekend it made $28mil. That's about what films were opening at in 1997, not to mention the fact at that time Leo DiCaprio was a relative no-name, who most only remembered from 'Growing Pains'. It put him back on the map. At the time, the bigger stars in the film had mediocre to small roles.

As for CD, i'm not saying this isn't a cool idea. I think it's very unique to just drop it in stores, if that's what they're gonna do. Very mysterious, and very Axl.

But i'm just interested to watch how it plays out financially. If it's a masterpiece, sales will reflect that, and the album will be big. But personally i'm wondering if the hype is just that... hype.

Personally people were hating back before the Illusions came out, and both of those albums contained the best GNR songs ever done, surpassing songs on AFD. Of course, i'm speaking of Coma & Estranged.

Who knows, maybe CD will do the same...

I say we wait until next week to see if the single rumor is true.  If it is, then the album will be here in a months time.
