Here Today... Gone To Hell!

Personally, I'd be content if GN'R didn't produce any music videos to promote Chinese Democracy. Gone are the days of exciting 'heavy rotation' or setting VCRs to catch your favourites. Everything is available online anyway and while that may be a great way to generate a buzz, it's also a great way to kill it. Take for example that Blue October song 'Hate Me'. It's a touching song and as someone 'recovering', it hit home. However, when I saw the video I couldn't have been more disappointed. The singer was doing ridiculous blinking things with his eyes and the imagery at the end doesn't relate at all to the lyrics (and not in an interesting, abstract, disassociated way). Sometimes the imagery created in your own mind when hearing a song is far more engaging, creative and moving than what a director or marketing genius would like you to see.

I'm not saying that GN'R would produce a lousy video, but as someone who loves this new music and wants to see it succeed, I really think it would be better to let the music stand on its own.

I agree completely - I'm a huge fan of the old GNR videos, but seeing as how I don't watch MTV anymore, and they don't play much in the way of actual music videos, it seems like it would be kind of pointless.

Yes they should if they have a good concept to create and they do something fresh.

also, besides TV, it could be a huge promotional tool on the internets!

They need videos if they want to be successful. Just because you don't watch MTV anymore doesn't matter millions do watch music channels and it's a great way to promote, a cool video alone can make a song much bigger than it would otherwise have been (see Tribute by Tenacious D). All that's needed is some great live footage and perhaps a bit of imagery linked to the song lyrics as long as it isn't cheesy or just plain weird (see Since I Don't Have You) then a video for the singles can do nothing but good.

I see no problem with it all.

Axl has been ambitious in the past with videos, and I look forward to seeing what ideas he has now. :beer:

I dig the way Beck handled the videos for The Information. I know there isnt a chance in hell of GNR doing something similar...but it would be awesome.

They should, off course. The question is when. If it's gonna be a video that takes more than 1 day to shot, I just don't see it happening. There's no time.

To be truthful, I'm not necessarily sure I could picture Axl, et al. in a video at this point, unless it were live, that is.

When did Axl actually say that. They are corny by the way. Best video GNR ever did BAR NONE was for The Garden of EDEN.

Nah, in order to be succesfull, they need quality music and a big tour to promote it. Pearl Jam is a perfect example.

Color me corny then, because I think November Rain's video is perfection.   :peace:

Of course they should make videos. GNR had some of the best videos of all time... They should continue with that.

I think the number one reason to do videos now would be to make the new guys familiar faces.

Most likely, because the tide has changed, it'll get play on VH1 more than MTV. VH1 has new videos air every single night of the week on 'Noctural State', which starts around 3am. They don't air any rap, so most likely GNR will see video-play there.

MTV2 will probably put it in the rock rotation, but VH1 at 3am in the morning has more viewers than MTV2 at primetime.

I actually like their "overblown" videos like estranged and NR, but I think they should just make a video of them playing live with a few other tidbits put in.

and to say they don't need a video is pretty stupid. how do you want people to know that there's a bunch of new guys in the band? how do you want to promote the new songs? you say you hate it when people expect to see slash and duff at a show but yet you don't want this guys to make a video? :hihi:

Axl should take a page out of Tool's music video playbook and not actually appear in the video. Let the music and images do the talking.

Agree. Do videos (Del James is still arround, he must have writte some good stories :yes:) Take some great director, do something stylish and it will help give a face to everybody in the band (I'm thinking about people who didn't follow GN'R as close as we've done)

Plus, they can put the videos on gunsnroses.com for everybody to see.

I would like to see say Better as a video, with live footage used for most of the video.

They should do a video for Better and have the video run an emotional story line, in the vein of November Rain, but different. Axl and company always made good videos for the most part, no reason to stop now

estranged video - in my opinion - it was the best video in the music history...

They have to make at least one video. Everyone should see that GNR still rocks even with the new band members.

I love the majority of GnRs videos.. particularly the epics live Estranged, November rain, and also the ones which just show the band playing, SCOM and Jungle etc.

BUT...

Its not the 80s/90s anymore and I think those types of videos are dated.

The only type I think they could pull off would be Concert footage, rehearsal footage, otherwise I wouldnt like to see them "acting" in the videos. too cheesy.

It would be good to see proper video's featuring the band. Throwing together live footage sucks a little.
At a guess i am thinking we might start to see videos that cost a ton of money to make, don't feature the band and consist of animations or footage shot of locations  :peace:

Seriously, they should make a video, theres enough live footage from the European tour to use.

Maybe if they threw footage from that funny movie with David Spade and Chris Farley where they go and try to promote the election.  That just might work.

i don't watch videos, so i could care less if they make any or not. I'd just like to have an official live dvd from this tour.

I hope they make a video comparable to "November Rain"!  Considering this album has already cost a shat load of money and has tons riding on it, I will bet my left nut that they will make at least 2 videos for it...

Anyway, I think it would be a good idea to get some (any) sort of promotional video out there to establish the new players. I'm sure there's something coming down the pipeline as we type.

They could make a new performance-based video without any dolphins etc  :hihi:. Just use clips from the Euro tour and put em together and you've got yourself a video.

If the videos aren't aired enough, I'm not sure it's worth making 'em!

There are other channels on tv that play videos other than MTV (I know MTV doesn't play shit, but MTV 2 plays the shit out of videos) these days. GN'R will make videos for this album, just like almost every other band that puts out an album does. I think it would be a REALLY WASTED OPPURTUNITY if they didn't.  The new single should have a video and I hope the vid will be out weeks before the album. It's good promotion and they need to promote this album in everyway possible. I can't wait to have some modern videos of GN'R, insted of watching 15 to almost 20 year old videos. I love the old videos, but it's time to have something new in that department. Axl has always come up with great concepts for his videos and NOW wouldn't be any different. If Better were to be the first video, the video to that song would kick so much fucking ass. I could see them making a really dark and melancholy video for that song. Something to give the public I nice FRESH and long awaited kick in the fucking ass to wake them up and let them know what's to come.

in short i think they should because they would get some airplay late at night on vh1 and god forbid mtv. mtv2 and fuse would put it in for the rock countdowns. Yahoo! would make it available online as well as youtube. so basically it will help, keyword help, reach a younger audience. Im 14 and i know how much time people around my age spend on youtube so its definately not something to cross off the list

I would love to see an video or two from the new album but only if it is made right. I'm sure if they do make a video it won't be shit. Just sucks how time has changed and they don't play rock videos on MTV or VH1 all day any more. 

This is a dumb question.  Of course they should make videos!  Axl is a video concept genius and I'm very much looking forward to the new videos.
