Title: What if..Chinese Democracy was sold at the concert
Post by: grog mug on October 20, 2006, 01:12:09 AM
I was just thinking.  Merck said you might see the album on the shelves with NO PROMOTION.  Does this mean it could be available at the concerts?  I can see them selling the album for $50.00 a piece.  Something good to think about...can't wait to hear about the opening night!!

That would be kick ass, and Guns are my favorite band, but $50 for an album?? Hell Fucking No. Nobody outside of us message board freaks would pay that.

Why would they sell the album for more than what it would be sold for in a retail setting?

Haha just a thought.  I know they will not sell it for more then $20.00 at most.  I just think this is something Axl would do.  Set up a stand with no label and put the album on it...let the people at the shows figure out what it is.

No he didn't.  The band is about to go on tour specifically to promote the CD.

People would be leaving the show to throw the CD on in the car! :hihi:

Good point.  At first I thought what a cool idea...let the people going to the show the first crack at the CD.  But...mass crowds trying to get the CD at the arena, then running out to hear it!

ANYTHING is a possibility.  This is just something else to think about.  The tour starts on a tuesday, just think, the album in stores AND you can buy it at the show the same day.

It's a fucking great idea to sell albums at shows but charging $50 would be the biggest rip off ever.

Yeah, if they're charging 50 bucks, we better get 30 tracks.... 25 would be fine by me.  : ok:

Mysteron - sorry for all the questions, but do you know if there's any validity to the idea that there may be no given release date for the album before it hits stores?  Was that just sarcasm not fully represented?

Mysteron -
It would have been sarcasm

What if everyone at the show could head down to Virgin Megastore (in NYC for example) and use their tix stub to get a free copy of the CD?  that'd be unreal (and never happen of course hehe  :hihi: )

I honestly think it'll hit stores, but with little to no promotion backing it up.  You might see a few copies at the show that come in a special package that you can only open with a secret code.  Everything is so damn secret.

But 50 bucks for the CD ? You gotta be kidding :peace:

I could very much see that happening except for the price tag.

I believe they'd just sell it for $10 - $15.

Thats funny. I just thought about that too. Everyone attending from the boards would be buying like 10 copies each just to send out to the rest of us!

I think they'd sell about 10,000 albums a night, 50,000 a week. Awful idea ???

Without fanfare and publicity...I think that would be quite a unique move to do something like that..And since the tour does kick off on a Tuesday , I do wonder about October 24th being the start of the 2006-2007 US tour...

If November 21st isn't happening..there's always the day after Christmas, the 26th of December..a heck of a way to end the year with the release of the new album (probably a guarantee it'll be #1 on Billboard at the start of 2007)

Merck did say it might come out without notice.  I mean there is little promotion I guess you could say, but not nearly enough.  That's why the idea of releasing the album at the shows would not surprise me.

sell it at the shows this week and then release it proper a little later? that might make a little sense but it'd piss me off ... i guess its sort of like a movie opening in limited release before given the national treatment.

i wrote that believing there's a way you can make a cd without allowing the music to get downloaded/spread. then there's 20,000 or so cds in circulation, a bunch of media types with copies, the fans with copies, everyone talking about how grand it is, but unable to replicate it properly. its not my theory of what will happen. to me it made a 'little sense' of a way to build hype and get something out without any warning. its the only way to get something out without warning, right?

Actually, I think a great idea would be to give away a short, 3 song disc at the opening night concert. Maybe with 2 released tracks (Better, IRS) and then 1 more song (myb even a good B-side that's not going to be on the final album).

That way, fans would listen, rave about it online & to friends, coworkers, and fellow students (Listen in dorms etc) and that would get word of mouth going fast..

As would uploading!! Even though they're finished tracks it'd really be nothing new, except for the 3rd song, but get alot of hype.

Also, wouldn't cost thee label much because most ppl who get it at the show would still buy the whole album, it would probably increase the percent of ppl at the show that will buy the album.. All for a relatively low fee.

same sort of idea as putting a couple new tracks on their myspace or something.

One of my buddies went to see Prince when he was touring for "Musicology", and he said that when he got to the arena everyone who bought floor seats had a copy of the cd waiting in their seat for them. GnR should do something kick-ass like that.

If there were floor seats that would be a great idea. Maybe a huge pile of CD's in the middle of the general admission floor...............

Hand them out either at the door or as you enter the GA area.

If they are to sell the CD at the show, I think they should sell it after the band start playing so you don't have to worry about getting the case and disc bashed during the show - and make sure the sales get counted in any chart runs.

I wonder if, once the album is out, the band will do a Pearl Jam style live release of each show? It seems fairly clear there are - or were at one recent point - plans for a "ChineseDemocracyTour" DVD  that presumably will be out after the album.

It would make more sense to sell it after the show is completely over as people are exiting.  Not that any of this is really going to happen IMO but if it was sold during the show there would be mass chaos no matter if the band had already come on or not.

tons of people leave before the show finishes, because GNR tend to come on when most bands are finisihing, i.e. 10.40pm, so the least you can do is sell copies to people who leave 'early'
