is power metal with symphonic elements.. and not as raw as pure power metal....

If anyone has the 'Gothic' album by Paradise Lost, would you say it's doom metal? Cos that's my feeling about it. Classic record too.

Doom metal almost always has clean singing, so a GnR/Axl doom song would almost certainly suck. I'd love to hear a bluesy GnR, covering Janis Joplin, though. One can dream.  :P

Are you guys hiding something from me?  :P I don't even look for GnR related stuff anymore, since I think rumors are stupid, and I will only care when CD is in the stores. If Axl does the "Perfect Crime" voice very slowly, maybe it could make for some good doom metal, but it would most likely be sludge rock.

It is generally said that Paradise Lost were Doom Metal in their early days, that including "Gothic". On the other hand it's hats down to them for improving the gothic metal genre. all in all, they're still mentioned in doom-metal lists. As for Nightwish...they have nothing to do with doom metal [my advice is, for anyone intertested, to check-out www.doom-metal.com you'll see no mention of Nightwish there].

If you like Hellhammer, you would like Mortuary In Darkness. :) It's by a band called Coffins. It's not really doom metal, more of a death/doom combination, with some old school tones thrown in.

start with the roots.....the song "black sabbath".

i'm just guessing that metal influences on this album could come primarily from black sabbath. the background guitars of "I.R.S." sound a little like the guitars in this song.

yeah, the best idea is to start with 'the beginnings'...i suggest some candlemass for starters...anyway it depends on what kind of doom you want to hear [traditional, death/doom, funeral-doom etc...] kinda gives ya headaches with all these categories. i say listen to some of each and see which you prefer...and only then go deeper into underground bands

There's some Saint Vitus for you. It's textbook doom metal. It's slow, bluesy, a little psychedelic, and 70's sounding. I find that doom metal is very influential on many "true" metal bands (their sound is very hard to describe) like Slough Feg, Manilla Road, and Brocas Helm. I find that both doom metal and "true" metal are very underrated in the metal community, which heavily favors death, thrash, power, and especially black metal today.

There's some really slow stoner doom for you there. That's as slow as I tolerate, since bands like Sunn O)) just seem like gimmicks to me. I prefer traditional doom, not too much stoner stuff.
