Title: E-mail Total Guitar regarding new GN'R feature
Post by: AxlReznor on October 15, 2006, 08:44:07 AM
Now I'm sure everybody here would like to see Robin, Richard and Ron featured in a cover feature for Total Guitar.  But the truth is, no magazine will put them on the cover at the moment, because they think the public isn't interested.  I was thinking, maybe if enough people requested just such a feature, they may give in to popular demand.
Only sensible e-mails please... no "u fukcin retards better put GNR on the cover cos the RULE!!!!!!!!!11111!!11 yo fucking suck r u gay crack smokers! put them on the cover!", because that would do more harm than good.  Both to the request, and to the overall reputation of fans of this band.
If we want this band to be promoted properly, we're gonna have to do some of the work ourselves, unfortunately... and a start is by helping the bandmembers become recognised when seperate from Axl.  It might not work... but it's worth a try.

Here's what I wrote...

Hi,

I've been a casual reader of Total Guitar for a couple of years now.  I've brought issues when I've seen that there is a feature with a guitarist who I am particularly interested.  I was just wondering whether you were going to have a feature on current Guns N' Roses guitarists Robin Finck, Richard Fortus and Ron Thal, as I am extremely anxious to find out more about them and hear what they have to say and am kind of annoyed at the lack of media coverage of the current tour.  It seems that most magazines are only interested in Axl, but I can tell you that I - and many others I know - am interested in the other members of this band, too, and thought that if any magazine was likely to write a fair feature that emphasised the other members, it would be the magazine that was created to put focus on the guitarists when everyone else seemed to be only interested in singers.

Hoping to see these great musicians gracing your magazine in the near future,

Anthony

A good idea, but don't Total Guitar always put someone on the cover who has a song on the free CD? i.e. a song that has a backing track and is tablatured inside the magazine? If that's their policy maybe when the new guys have a hit single or a popular album cut that people want to learn how to play, I'm sure it'll just be a matter of time before the three R's make the cover.  :peace:

they'll probably be featured after CD comes out.

Unless people let them know they want them on there, they won't be on there without Axl.? And Axl won't want to do it.

Anyway... if the album is coming out sometime soon, they'll be wanting to get their exclusive done round about now so it can be printed at around the same time.  So the more people who let them know that we're interested in other members besides Axl, the more chance of it taking place there is.

They should put Bucket, Richard, and Robin on the cover. They could talk about laying down their guitar parts on Chinese Democracy. Ron's not on the album so he's just Gilby Clarke 2006.

I'm pretty sure if they'll be doing any interviews, it'll be with the current players.

Then the cover and interview should just be with Richard and Robin.

You can e-mail them as much as you want, the truth is you will not decide who is on the cover? :P
It's like me e-mailing Merck about telling Axl to return with just 2 guitar players. I will never do that, because I know it would be useless to ask it, I don't have the power to decide what Axl should or shouldn't do for Guns N' Roses.
I'm just a fan. You are just fans. and that's it.

Plus, no disrespect to Bumblefoot, but he hasn't the same status in the band that the 2 RF.? It's not his fault, it's just the record was already finished by the time he was hired. Same for Buckethead, although it's not for the same reasons (He is not part of the band anymore - and it's been a while now).
Maybe bbf will in 2 or 3 years (if he is still in the band). Only time will tell. But as we speak now there is no reason Total Guitar makes him publicity on a record he didn't play one single note. It would be ackward. if they want to make a cover on their magazine about him, ok fine, I would be happy for him, but not about Chinese Democracy.

Wrong... the current thinking now is that they don't want them on the cover because there isn't enough public interest.? If we can convince them that there is public interest, the more likely it is it will happen.
Magazines aren't bands... magazines give in to popular demand, because what they're interested in is if they will sell enough copies.

To write these e-mails is to assume the new GNR guitarists want the cover and cant get it, of which theres no evidence.  When the time is right, and if theye interested, GNRs promotion team will contact these magazines and make the deals - thats how it works.

i think most guitar magazines will have the three GNR amigos (Finck, Thal and Fortus) on the cover when Chi Dem is finally released...

Sure it would be cool if the gn'r guitarists would be on the cover etc., but i think that it is their choise not the mags... As soon as CD is out they'll be on every fuckijn' guitar mag fram japan to the u.s. guaranteed. i think some alot of music mags might be interested already, but i think robin richard and ron have been restricted to not say so much just quite yet... same goes for tommy, brain and the rest...

soon is the word tho! :o

There is evidence.  There's just no evidence that's been made public. ;)

Nah, not with GNR.  The media begs, whines, pleads and harasses, and eventually somebody at the label may respond to the 'majors', but just consumer/music press.  They may get around to responding to  specialty mags eventually.  (With most platinum bands, the media approaches the label, the label picks the ones they want,  unless the label is throwing a ton of money into the pot and and they hire an contract publicist for that purpose).

However, GNR is certainly not on the media radar anymore aside from the diehards like MTV (I assume) and the the tabloid interest generated by fights with Tommy Hilfiger.  I'm surprised how little they care.  It's a far cry from just a few years ago when everybody was clamoring for news.  A couple of years after the failed US tour, it just evaporated.  Axl (the high profile guy) doesn't even rate a mention on the GQ cover for an in depth story.

As for Total Guitar, yes, the editors, who probably like the rest of the real world never venture on this board, really wouldn't know what was up with the band.   People here don't realize how little of this info is front and center in the aforementioned real world.   The common response is, 'GN'R?  They're still around?' with a puzzled look.   The mag certainly wouldn't automatically expect their readership to care.   The really do need the nudge.

And sending letters to media, pubishers, radio, promoters, retailers, etc, and even the label always works wonders (especially if a) it doesn't look like somebody organized the interest by posting the address on a fan board, or b) it's obvious it's from a fan board, but it's a strong (overwhelming, even) response.   (Any media types feel free to correct me if I'm wrong re: the latter).

Sending letters to management does nothing.

Oh wait, that's not true...   it annoys them!  ;D

having spoke to someone working in the media field, i was told:

the emails would need to continue, rather than just being a load sent over 1-2 days
