Title: The Greatest RPG's Post by: AtariLegend on October 14, 2006, 04:30:31 PM There probably another thread like this, so since I didn't find one, I thought why not post one.
So anyone want to recommend any classic or not well known about RPG's for any format. I would say Neverwinter Nights is a classic that any PC gamer should own. Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: Guns N RockMusic on October 14, 2006, 06:19:28 PM Does Ocarina of Time count as an RPG?
Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: AtariLegend on October 14, 2006, 06:20:25 PM Yes, great mention
Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: lcg on October 14, 2006, 06:31:31 PM Does Ocarina of Time count as an RPG? Nice. And also Majora's Mask :)Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: T_Roxie on October 14, 2006, 06:32:53 PM Neverwinter nights was a bit lame, i thought. Planscape: Torment, Baulder's Gate (all of them) and morrowind/oblivion are pretty good. Fallout as well, bit dated tho.
Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: Origen on October 14, 2006, 06:46:44 PM Zelda ocarina of time is not strictly a RPG it's a fantasty/action adventurer.
A RPG and the greatest one is Final Fantasy Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: Gunner80 on October 14, 2006, 07:02:46 PM My favorite so far is "Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the cursed king" - 112 hours of fun.
Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: Megaguns on October 14, 2006, 07:14:37 PM I remember an RPG called Landstalker on the sega genesis years ago. It was way ahead of its time, I love the splinter cell games on xbox (if you class them as RPGs)
Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: -Jack- on October 14, 2006, 08:38:47 PM The original dragon warrior... great shit.
7 is cool too. Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: AtariLegend on October 14, 2006, 08:42:26 PM Am I the only Dungeons + Dragons Video games fan alive?
Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: Dirty Little Thing on October 16, 2006, 12:24:47 AM My current favorites are
Oblivion and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic : ok: Honorable Mention: Chrono Trigger Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: Sin Cut on October 16, 2006, 04:15:33 AM Fallout 2 and the Baldurs Gate series.
Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: Sober_times on October 16, 2006, 04:35:07 AM Chrono Trigger is the best all time, I loved it, Kept playing it over and over and still do. Though Chrono Cross (its Sequel) was not nearly as good.
I Also Love: The Phantasy Star Series(Sega Master System and Genesis), Shining Force Series (Both Genisis and Saturn), Y's The Vansihed Omens (original for Sega Master System, Though maybe more of a action/adventure like Zelda), Y's III (Genisis) Oblivion(Xbox 360), DaggerFall (PC), Beyond Oasis (Genisis), Legend Of Oasis (Saturn), Grandia (Saturn Version), Grandia II (Dreamcast Version), Skies Of Arcadia (Dreamcast), Shenmue and Shenmue II (Dreamcast and Xbox, Though I call them RPG, some call them more action/adventure), Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic(Xbox), All of The Zelda Series except Majora's Mask, Super Mario RPG (SNES, I dont know why but I really liked this simple, easy game), Miracle Warriors(Sega Master System). Thats all I can think of Off the top of my Head and I love all of them for a variety of reasons. Final Fantasy Didnt make my list, cuz I am one of few that thinks the series sucks. I dont know why but I just never got into it. Same with the D&D games. :smoking: Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: pilferk on October 17, 2006, 10:03:22 AM Best Console RPG ever: ChronoTrigger
Best RPG ever: Ultima IV Just MHO. Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: Neemo on October 17, 2006, 10:40:07 AM Final Fantasy 1
Legend of Zelda: OCarina of Time Diablo II Baldur's Gate (Orig PC) Neverwinter Nights Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: Evolution on October 17, 2006, 11:16:11 AM Final Fantasy 7!
Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: pilferk on October 17, 2006, 11:49:43 AM Final Fantasy 7! Oh god....to quote X-play "FF7 was emo before emo was even emo". Sorry, for me FF7 is the single most overrated RPG in history.? It was OK to good, with slick presentation and a moderately interesting plot line.? It was also so linear and, at times, mind numbingly boring, that I can't believe I sunk 70+ hours into it.? ?The best thing, IMHO, about the game happens about 1/2 way through it.....and then...eh...Chronotrigger was SOOOO much better....Hell, so was Earthbound. IMHO, FFX was much better too, though even that game isnt perfect, either.? I'll take Tidus over Cloud any day of the week.? Oblivion (and I know I'm going to be called sacrelidgeous by the JRPG faithful) was a better RPG (not necessarily a better GAME, just a better RPG) than just about every FF game ever released.? The Dragon Quest games kick sand in the face of most of the FF games... Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: Evolution on October 17, 2006, 12:15:14 PM At the time though, for me anyway it was cutting edge stuff.
You can't beat a Chocobo Race, and Materia. Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: AtariLegend on October 17, 2006, 01:17:39 PM I hate nothing more than people who play Oblivion, love it, and don't know that Morrowind exists.
Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: Jim on October 17, 2006, 01:48:46 PM I hate nothing more than people who play Oblivion, love it, and don't know that Morrowind exists. Hmm, though the same could be said about people who don't acknowledge that Morrowind was the third Elder Scrolls game... I wanted to play Morrowind again at some point, but after playing Oblivion I think that would just be too difficult to get into. The solo quests on Morrowind were appaling for their part, and having to walk back and forth from the camp with that wise ol' woman was one of the most tedious things in history. Oblivion is far and away the best game, period, that I have ever played. But I'm not really a game player. Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: pilferk on October 17, 2006, 01:59:10 PM I hate nothing more than people who play Oblivion, love it, and don't know that Morrowind exists. Have it, played it, love it.? Actually, I have 2 versions..the PC version and the Xbox GOTY version.? Actually, I own, and have played, every single Elder Scrolls title starting with Arena (even the god awful FPS-style Battlespire).? They've all been stellar (well, all the RPG's)...even the bug ridden Daggerfall was excellent once they repaired all the wonkineess. I like Oblivion more than Morrowind because the main and central plot picks up a bit quicker, but the expansiveness and free range game play are fundamentally the same.? Oh, and Oblivion looks prettier, too. :)? But seriously, I like the game mechanics in Oblivion a little bit more, too.? The insta-travel and the horse make such a HUGE difference in playability.? If only they would release the Construction Set on 360, or allow the 360 to play PC created content, it would be perfect.? Because it doesn't I had to go out and get the PC version too....because some of the user created content (just like in Morrowind) is awesome. Oh, and you know what I hate? People who "hate" something based on a faulty assumption.... Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: pilferk on October 17, 2006, 02:08:46 PM Oblivion is far and away the best game, period, that I have ever played. But I'm not really a game player. One of my top 10, I think, now. My #1 would have to be Ultima IV. #2 would probably be Half Life 2. #3 would probably be Chronotrigger.? The original Zelda and Super Metroid would probably round out my top 5. I think Oblivion would be #6 or #7 (I'd have to think long and hard about how it compares to Catlevania:Symphony of the Night). Still pretty high up on the list of someone who IS a pretty long time and prolific game player. OK, just for fun.here's the rest: 6) Oblivion 7) C:SOTN 8) Tetris 9) Super Mario 64 10) Age of Empires II 11) Everquest (the original, after release, prior to the massive changes and transformation into Evercamp) 11b) World of Warcraft (in it's current state) 12) Starcraft 13) Gold Box Dungeons and Dragons Collection (I'm cheating, I know...but it's my list) 14) Kid Icarus 15) Elite 16) Resident Evil 4 17) Civilization (and all it's revamps and updates aka sequels) 18) Goldeneye 007 19) Ocarina of Time 20) Star Wars: Tie Fighter That was remarkably tough.....Strider and Bionic Commando, two of my all time favorites, didn't even make it in... Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: Sober_times on October 17, 2006, 05:50:05 PM Morrowind was basically Daggerfall with a graphical improvement. New story maybe, but same basic game mechanics, it didn't change all that much and I was not hugely impressed. However Oblivion is much more polished in all facets of the game, its what Morrowind should have been.? :smoking:
Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: AtariLegend on October 17, 2006, 06:26:53 PM Morrowind was a great game, inspite of the fact that every 25 hours I would come across a quest with bug that nothing could be done about, and thus after spending 3 months are somthing like that playing it, I would have to start it all over again from the start.
This was the same on both X-box and PC. Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: Sober_times on October 17, 2006, 08:18:06 PM Morrowind was a great game, inspite of the fact that every 25 hours I would come across a quest with bug that nothing could be done about, and thus after spending 3 months are somthing like that playing it, I would have to start it all over again from the start. This was the same on both X-box and PC. I dont think it was all that great because it was vastly similar to game made several years before, Elder Scrolls II:Daggerfall. Some of the Fighters Guild and other Guild Missions as well were exactly the same. The game was essentially Daggerfall with a graphical improvement. Though for those who had never played Daggerfall, for those looking for a lessy buggy, graphically improved version of it, i can see them loving it. :smoking: Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: pilferk on October 18, 2006, 09:15:29 AM Morrowind was a great game, inspite of the fact that every 25 hours I would come across a quest with bug that nothing could be done about, and thus after spending 3 months are somthing like that playing it, I would have to start it all over again from the start. This was the same on both X-box and PC. PC version was eventually patched to fix those issues. The original X-box version was, to some extent, almost unplayable because of those bugs, and the "unreadable disk" error problems. The GOTY edition on Xbox did a lot of those issues, but not all of them. The dreaded DDE errors, though, were much less frequent and, if you didn't have a Thompson drive in your Xbox, they were pretty much non-existent. Title: Re: The Greatest RPG's Post by: axlrosehunny on October 18, 2006, 01:32:07 PM Knights of the old republic is a kickass game. Both of them!
I always liked Romace of the three kingdoms |
