Title: Most underrated GnR song?
Post by: cotis on June 13, 2006, 03:34:26 PM
In your guys, or gals, opinions, what is the GNR song that is not talked about enough, not liked enough, and not as well known as others?

I'll start it off...

Most Underrated GnR Song:
1.) The Garden

Easily!

Its one of, maybe THE best songs on the illusions albums, how could they never play this live and yet they played shotgun blues..

Shotgun Blues was never played live and in my opinion, GNR's most underrated song is Locomotive.

to me the garden is fucking amazing, but for me it's because of the great guitar work, that song rocks solo wise..

coma

My band is currently learning Coma for precisely that reason!

Title: Re: Most underrated GnR song?
Post by: russtcb on June 17, 2006, 08:22:39 AM
From all of the albums i have heard in my life, coma is one of the most outstanding song! I never got it why they didnt release a video... i suppose slash and co would have problems like he had commented for estranged...
Its a masterpiece of the masterpieces in my opinion!

It really seems that Coma could've benefited from an "Estranged"-like video. I think by the time they got to the final singles for that album that everyone was sick of everyone else in the band so I think thats why they never even tried.

I know UYI had a ton of singles as it was, but I really think songs like "Coma" and "Breakdown" would've helped open the door even further to those albums to more fans. It's a shame they never got play.

agree with you mike
one in a million is an under rated classic
may not have been politically correct, but i think
thats for evry 1 to listen 2 an decide for themselves
about what the band were saying in the lyrics.
great tune, axels vocals spot on !!!

I don't think Coma could've been released as a single, even if radio stations were okay with its length. ?Remember, this was the early 90s. ?Radio singles still had to be 'radio friendly' (i.e. - no hardcore swearing). ?It wasn't until years later that they started mixing out the swear words (a la all rap songs on MTV these days). ?If it had been a song like Since I Don't Have You, where the word is pretty much isolated from the flow of the song, maybe, but there are some important FUCKs and GODDAMNs in Coma. ?I don't think Axl would've caved to editing them out anyway, especially after what they did to the radio edit of Sweet Child. ?My two cents. ?:peace:

I was just listening to Get In The Ring, and I've always liked it, but now I love it. Don't know what happened but it's just a great song with great attitude. But the most underrated is definitely Coma.

Title: Re: Most underrated GnR song?

Estranged, Coma, Breakdown and Locomotive

These songs are easily the best on the illusions, alongside Civil War, You Could Be mine and maybe another one

But only us, hardcores know them

Listening to Locomotive right know... Man if that piano ending isn't amazing, I don't know what is!

Title: Re: Most underrated GnR song?
Post by: Eclipsed107 on October 06, 2006, 01:42:12 AM
I don't think I'd call Coma or Estranged underated.  I guess Estranged was underated by the casual radio listeners, and most of them haven't even heard Coma...

.. but if you poll Gn'R fans I'm sure Coma and Estranged would both make the top 10 in favorite songs.

Title: Re: Most underrated GnR song?

Rhiad

Rhiad And the Bedouins is a great song, ruined by the shitty voice that Axl used to have in 2002, but I think that Rhiad is the stronger new track on the guitar performance. London 2002 version was incredible, amazing.

Axl needs to try this song live again, with his current voice. That song is killer, but was ruined in the past by Axl

Darn it, I was just about to say "Back Off Bitch." It's a great rock song, I love the line "Emotions ripped, gone on a binge." Other than that song, Don't Damn Me, Locomotive and Coma of course. Also 14 Years and Civil War... Pretty much most of UYI 1 & 2 are underrated in the public eye. My english teacher told me recently (after I let him hear a couple of the new demos) that he "thought that GN'R should've just given up after Appetite For Destruction and never released Use Your Illusion, but these new songs really rock. I'm interested in seeing what the new album will sound like."

COMA for sure. under rated because not too much airplay, not played and a lot of shows (cause it's hard to play) and not known to the average GNR listener. Yet COMA is my favorite GNR song.

well ,
from AFD it s "Think about  You"! what a great song, with an unbelievable ending.....

from UYI I it s "Dont Damn Me"

from UYI II it s "Breakdown" .... the best lyrics !

from Spaghetti it s "Hairt of the Dog" ....

from the unreleased songs it s "Crash Diet"!

Rhaid for sure.? ? Oh My God didn't get the credit it deserved either.? ? ?

Yeah, OH MY GOD is a good hardcore song....if they tweaked it (which apparently they have already)....it WILL get the credit it deserves....the drum mix in the backround is WAY too sloppy and they need more spacing in between the verses so it is easier to perform live....right now, it is almost impossible to perform and still be able to keep your voice....

Hear me out! but I think maybe Sweet Child O Mine.
Because it's been so overplayed I know myself and a lot of others kinda gloss over it, "oh there's sweet child again, put on rocket queen/yesterdays/CITR" sit down and pretend you've never heared it and really listen. it's a damn good song, yeah it's kinda poppy (as far as GnR go anyway) but it's good and catchy, got a good solo, the "where do we go now" break. It got really popular because, well, because it's good!

The Garden

overall I'd probably say Dead Horse is the most underrated.

I like what some one did with the most underrated from each album so I will throw that in there too.

AFD- Rocket Queen
Lies- One in a Million
UYI 1- Dead Horse
UYI 2- Locomotive (glad so many others like the song too)
TSI- Ain't It Fun
Live Era- Used to Love Her
Chinese Democracy from what we have heard....- There Was a Time.  I could easily see this song being like Estranged, getting respect but not nearly enough respect.

I like that too so I deleted my previous answer and am re-answering here.

AFD: "Rocket Queen"

Lies: "You're Crazy" (I'm not saying "One in a Million" because I don't think that song is so much underrated as it is misunderstood.)

UYI I: "Don't Damn Me"

UYI II: "Locomotive"

UNDERRATED
AFD - My Michelle, IMO it's one of their best songs, but it gets overshadowed by so many other songs on AFD.
LIES - Mama Kin, IMO it rivals the Aerosmith version and is probably their best cover. : ok:
UYI1 - Don't Damn Me, IMO it's their best song
UYI2 - So Fine, a lot of people seem to hate this song, but IMO it's great.  Espechally the version from the UYI tour videos.
TSI -  Human Being, an awesome, awesome, fantastic cover - great song.
NEW - TWAT, IMO one of the best songs every associated with the Gn'R name, I find it amazing that there are people on this board who do not love it....

OVERRATED
AFD - Paradise City, I never saw what everone sees in it, sure it's a good song, but I could never understand why it's such a big hit.
LIES - I honestly don't think there's an overrated song on this album, every song is fantastic. : ok:
UYI1 - Dead Horse, I never really got into this song..
UYI2 - Knockin' On Heaven's Door - Not a great cover IMO, Live Era version is amazing, but the UYI version is cheesy.
TSI - I honestly don't think there's anything overrated on this album either, every song is good and none of the songs are rated very high...
NEW - Catcher In the Rye, I just don't see what makes people like this song so much.  It's a good tune, but it's not nearly as good as TWAT, Madagascar or The Blues IMO (I'm only compairing it to slower songs..)

Good choice!? ?: ok:? I agree that "Mama Kin" is probably GNR's best cover.

But I'm sticking with "You're Crazy" because it is so good but I never, ever hear anyone talk about it.? (However, I have not been on these message boards very long...? ?;))

I like how the Lies version of "You're Crazy" showcases the band's blues and classic rock influences without losing any of it's hard-rockin' edge, just some electricity? ;).? It's slower and funkier than the AFD version, which I think makes it fun to dance to (or just sit back and nod your head to?).? And Axl's vocals simply shine on it.? I don't know if I could choose it, or any one song, on Lies as "best" though -- they're all great!

Pretty Tied Up...(I fuckin' love that song)...as well as Locomotive and Double Talkin' Jive...

Estranged and Coma are complete masterpieces...and Nov. Rain, but its so overplayed, its easy to forget and "miss" the beauty of the lyrics and the arrangment...its great to NOT listen to it for a few months....then listen and "hear" again what a amazing song it is...

Whoever said KOHD, Patience and Paradise are overrated...I AGREE. I've always thought Paradise was way too long. Chop the thing in half and it would def. improve it.

AylaRose

OH and another underrated is Move To The City! Great song...

One in a Million or Coma.

One in a Million is overated, as is the whole Lies album. And Coma, while having moments of greatness, goes on for too long and would have worked out for the better if it had been cut back by afew minutes. It takes too long to get going, and the only good bits are Slash towards the end. Infact, the Slahs work near the end of the track is the one thing that makes Coma good. A version without all the medical bleeps, and female over dubs would have worked out great.

breakdown

Couldn't agree more. I used to hate that song, then one day it just started growing on me. I feel like a jackass for not seeing how great it was sooner.

I have no idea how you can say Don't Damn Me. That song sounds so half baked to me. It has all the GnR attitude behind it, although their attitude has gone to waste on a half baked song. Thats just my take on Don't Damn Me  :peace:

COMA ????????? Are you mental..Coma is a piece of art...GNR could never do that song Live..still can?t..Because it?s something you only can create in the studio..Everyone who underates Coma are retarded..

I?m not callin you retarded but wherever you got the idea that Coma is underated from...Ignore it !

"Coma is a piece of art...GNR could never do that song Live"

I think I'm a 100% positive it was on the Jap version of Live Era or something.

I always wondered if Ax?s Pentecostal background introduced him to the story of Coma (there are several, one referenced below if you are interested). Considering his interest in other classic pieces I suppose its possible.

That was Hot?Thanks for the link?

Crash Diet! Obviously because it was never released, except for Asphalt Ballet's (pretty cool) cover on their Pigs album, I reckon Crash Diet is a damn cool song. And it would have been great to hear a produced version of the song, although the soloing on the demo is crazy!

I did not mean that GNR could NOT do it..I meant they couldn?t do it right..they did their best..but that wasn?t good enough

But still GNR is the only band who can ever try to do the song..but..that?s a piece of art that you can never create LIVE

Don't Damn Me
Breakdown
Locomotive
14 Years
Coma

you could make a big long list of songs from the illusions that are under rated but 'don't damn me' is probably the best rocker type song on them and 'locomotive' is so good that i'm stunned it qualifies as underrated. for me, though, 'oh my god' is the great underrated, underloved, under cared for gem of all gems. how that song was booed off the radio i'll never know. all three songs are lyrically complex and oh my god and locomotive are pretty structurally complex, too. axl sings the hell out of don't damn me. it's my favorite axl vocal along with estranged and rocket queen.
