Title: what should the albums opening track be???
Post by: smugolo on October 05, 2006, 09:35:08 AM
out of the songs we've heard so far i think 'chinese democracy' would be a great choice.

a slow build up with the minute-long introduction, then the awesome riff kicks in! it'd be cool to have the title track as the opening track.

Yeah definately CD. Such an intro would kill the momentum of the album if anywhere else.

should and will be CD.

from what we;ve heard so far, chinese democracy. the intro would need to be longer tho, kinda like how robin does sometimes live.

At Donnington, the Chinese Democracy intro made the hill rumble! I would love to hear the recorded version of the new guitar lick.

It should be a raw, unchecked, 5-second audio clip of Axl simply saying:  "Thank you all for sticking around."

Then Prostitute explodes and off we go.

Anyone think that a really soft melody intro would be cool? ?Just the guys playing, no vocals from Axl. ?Then break into Chinese Democracy. ?It would throw people off. ?Waiting to hear from Axl for so long and not even have him singing on the first track. ?

i was just listening to CD from Madrid, Spain and thinking that it should be the opening track. the intro to the song is amazing. i think it would be a great way to kick off the album.

Theres no way of telling what the opening track is we have only heard 7 of the thirteen tracks so it could be and other of the 6 . BUt CD would be cool  : ok:

What about a cover of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing"?

Title: Re: what should the albums opening track be???
Post by: kunzerd on October 05, 2006, 10:20:35 AM
i agree that CD should be the opening track. actually ill bet that it is, but i havent heard these current bootleg versions yet.

last time i heard it was at hammerstein. it started out with a couple second synth intro, then the drums kicked in, then the guitar played the opening riff a couple times, then the whole band jumped in. if that is how they still play it than i agree, that should be the album version.

No No and No and besides do you even know what Prostitute sounds like, do you know that its gonna be on the album??? or anything other than the fact it was mentioned as a rumour in RS about 7 years ago.....
on topic definatly for me it would be "chinese Democracy" as the opener but I wouldnt have the thing Robin has been doing recently, I would have the intro as it was played previously,  just Robins riff then the band all kick in, thats gotta be the one ?8)

to be honest that would suck, a 15 year wait for new material then only half the album are new songs, the band would never live it down!

Then the title of this thread should be changed to "out of the leaks/live songs we've heard, which one should be the opening track?"

I say Prostitute hoping the rumors of it being a badass, heavy song are true as I don't agree with any of the current tracks being the solid opener except maybe Better.  But I'd still rather it be a tune we've not heard yet.

a bonus disc with AFD material would be fine. As for CD it'self, i don't want to hear any old tunes on there, and that includes new cover songs.

Not a strong opener IMO.

no it won't..

would not be surprized if Chinese Democracy wasn't on the album..
would not surprize me if the Chinese Democracy the album was called something else..
someone said the other day that Dizzy said the album cover art has changed from the b&w photo of the bikes..

It does say on GN'R's website that "Guns N' Roses announce the first leg of their 'Chinese Democracy' Tour."  If I had to guess, I'd say the CD name is still intact.

I'll agree in CITR, awesome song.

But the CD tune I heard in 2001 would make for a horrible opener.  I hope it's gone through some serious changes since then.

CITR is the WORST opener for a GN'R album. It's very mellow, and people that aren't die-hard like us will pick it up and say summet like "GN'R and Axl have gone soft, I expected a rocker" you know what I mean?

Title: Re: what should the albums opening track be???
Post by: Lord Kayoss on October 05, 2006, 02:06:13 PM
I was just agreeing that CITR is an awesome song, one of Axl's best.  I'm not in any way in the line of thinking it's a great opener.

A good closer though, for sure.

Silkworms.  Listen motherfuckers to this first song that should be heard.

I honestly don't think that any of these songs have that 'opening track' feel to them, but if I had to pick one of the new songs I'd go with mostly everyone else and pick Chinese Democracy.

But that track IMO would need more altercations to it to sound like an opening song (even though it's already a good song).

If I had to guess I think it'll have an intro before the first song anyway, so this whole topic could be pointless.

From the songs we've heard, it definitely has to be "Chinese Democracy"

Based on that killer ambient intro, and then ripping into the opening chords, the song would be perfect.. It's a killer riff, it's simple, it's a catchy melody, and it's not musically complicated or anything like that..It's easy to grasp, it doesnt need repeated listens to take it all on like "Madagascar" might.. just my own opinion

"Better" would be a good 2nd or 3rd track

Acording to the band, there are more than three dozen songs.  what are the chances that what we have heard so far will all be on the same album?  There are probably so many other great songs that can open the album.  Chinese Democracy would be killer though, Ive always thought that the opening riff is one of the coolest riffs Ive ever heard. : ok: :peace:

Title: Re: what should the albums opening track be???

Indeed, Better is more of a track 3 or beyond kinda song - The beginning track either needs to sound massive or fast n' aggressive.

Something like Rhiad would totally fit the bill, but I'm sure there's something we haven't heard yet that'd work even better as the intro.

Good point. I think it will be either CD/IRS or something of that caliber that we havent heard yet. No way in hell is Better, CITR, or anything of that magnitude going to open the album. YOu cant give too much of the album away on the opening track, so it will most definitely be one of the "average" songs from the album. They wont open the album with a "big gun".

initially, i agreed with the majority here that "chinese democracy" would be the best opener, but after listening again through the projected CD songs we have in their various forms with this specific question in mind, i now firmly believe that "better" should (and will) be the opener. of the songs we've heard so far, this is the "welcome to the jungle" of them, a catchy rocker that establishes the new band as a force to be reckoned with. opening with one of the others would position the album closer with the illusions records, which from the live set list, is obviously NOT axl's intent. as far as which songs will and won't be on CD, i think the live sets should give you a pretty good idea. it would be pretty silly of them to be playing something live that isn't going to be on the first record. so i think we can count on "better," "the blues," "chinese democracy," "IRS," "madagascar" and "there was a time" being on CD. as far as "catcher" and any others go, it's anyone's guess. i kinda hope they let sleeping dogs lie on "oh my god" and "silkworms," but wouldn't mind hearing a finished version of "rhiad."

I'd have to say I.R.S.

It's a nice 4-minute rocker with a simple catchy melody and riff. It leads you in with a rockin' tune and in a lot of ways eases you into some of the more complex material. 'Better' is awesome but has a lot of parts. When I think of taking the cd home and putting it in my player and pressing 'play' I can totally picture that first acoustic bit opening the album, then I.R.S. rocking your face off. Then that solo...it's a good tune to lead off with.

I'm still hoping that CITR shows up on CD - Preferably as track 2. Imagine going from something incredible as the opening track, only to go into an ethereal, dreamy-sounding track like CITR, and then into a whacked out hybrid song like Better.

The variety on this record is going to be simply terrific, and hopefully it's well-sequenced to give the songs a decent flow.

Title: Re: what should the albums opening track be???

i think it would be cool with chinese democracy as the opening track, with that same one-minute-long pitman-intro as they play live before finck start the riff.. my other favourite band hardcore superstar had that kinda intro on their latest album not the same intro but about a minute long intro before the fisrt song, then the last song of the album ended the same way as the first song started

Title: Re: what should the albums opening track be???
Post by: HoldenCaulfield on October 06, 2006, 03:00:55 PM
I'd bet good money it's gonna be 'Chinese Democracy', especially with how the new intro builds up. It's a kick-ass introduction to the band and the rest of the album to shortly follow it. It really should open the new shows as well. It ROCKS live. You can feel the building shaking...

definitely CD from what we've heard so far..All previous GNR albums have had killer intro's so this one has a lot to live up to...it needs to be in the style of the old band with a modern twist imo...."Better" i think is a bit too far from the sound of the old band to be an opener in my opinion...cos all i know is wen i first heard the intro to that song my first opinion was..."this sounds shit"! but it grew on me : ok:

Title: Re: what should the albums opening track be???
Post by: nesquick on October 06, 2006, 03:31:02 PM
First impression is really important indeed. That's why "better" should not be the 1st single. The intro is weak. the first time I heard the intro I was like "WTF is that? it sounds like shit", and I'm not a fan of that song because of that 1st impression. it ternished the song for me and left me a bad taste. I still don't like the intro and probably never will.?It's also too "modern" and can destabilize lots of old fans...?

1st impression = almost everything

The 1st song should be very old-GN'R influence, that's what people like the most.

Ya know, I kinda agree. ?That intro to IRS would make a perfect opening riff, then it explodes into that great riff.. it could be the opening track..

Nesquick, First impression does mean everything to a shallow, narrow minded individual. : ok:

First impression is really important indeed. That's why "better" should NOT be the 1st single. The intro is really weak. the first time I heard the intro I was like "WTF is that? it sounds like shit", and I'm not a fan of that song because of that 1st impression. it ternished the song for me and left me a bad taste. I still don't like the intro and probably never will.

1st impression = almost everything

I think that the intro to Better is awesome, and the rest of the song is even better. ?The heavy part, oh man... and the slower solo... wow. ?What a fantastic song. :)

oh shut up rat face. Leave me alone. Go away and live your life. you really start to annoy me now with your stupid comments everytime I post.
If you don't agree, fine, but don't start looking for troubles and provocate, using irony everytime I say something. Are you that annoyed i blocked you by PM? yeah you're on my "black list" because I don't want you to PM me anymore, When i don't like someone I exclude him for a long long time, so don't start to bring shit on the topics because I blocked you on PM. Go away.

Yep, wholly great structure. the intro has an effect like a music box. It seems as if it evokes something from the depths of our consciousness.
Yet, I don't see it as the intro to the whole album.
They have a very piece that introduces us to the world of Chinese democracy.

Yea, that's what I'm saying too.  Better has an awesome intro, but not an awesome intro for an album.

The opening track should be something we haven't heard yet

It should be a raw, unchecked, 5-second audio clip of Axl simply saying:  "Thank you all for sticking around."

Then Prostitute explodes and off we go.

i would cry if axl decided to do that, but i know he wont.

chinese democracy would be cool for the opening track. Aerosmith did that a few with thier albums having the album tilte the same as the opening track. They did for Toys In The Attic and Draw The Line.

Coming from someone who is really hoping that very few of the songs we've heard actually make it to this album,
if I had to pick one I would go with Maddy

It would be a shame to open the album with "better"..."better" is one of the finest Guns and Roses song EVER!!! it would be like opening Use Your Illusion I with November Rain, it just doesn't flow. Save Better for the middle of the album.
