Title: Ryan Adams
Post by: Danny Top Hat on September 24, 2006, 12:05:43 PM
Is anyone here a fan?  I've heard scattered tracks over the years - never a full album.  I've been listening to him a lot on the hype machine lately and i'm going to see him play live tonight at Rock City. :peace:

I can't fucking wait.  Everything i've heard from him so far sounds like it's from the same vein as Neil Young, which is just cool!  I'll post with a review when I get the chance.

He's awesome.

I think he's one of those artists who try everything. So you end up liking some of it and not other parts.

I've got all his albums and i still think Gold is the best. Its the ultimate chillout album for me and has some really good songs onit.

He's the sort of artist who greatest hits are gonna be awesome but some songs do suck.

I've also heard that he stays current as far as playing live goes i.e. plays alot off his latest albums. Which can suck so you'll have to let me know what songs he plays.

Enjoy mate  : ok:

He's great.  I've seen him live four times now and he's always worth it.  Changes up arrangements live somewhat like Dylan.  Incredible catalog, both solo and with alt. country outfit Whiskeytown.  Check out Heartbreaker, Love is Hell & Cold Roses.  I'm glad he isn't MTV-popular (though he did flirt with that briefly); that tends to ruin a lot of artists.  His cult status is much better, far fewer posers in the room at his shows.

Gold is an awesome record.

He lost me a little with Rock n Roll - where I swear some of the songs were blatant rip off's. One song sounded exactly like an Oasis song and another a Strokes song. Apparantly he knocked it out in a couple of weeks though because the label rejected Love is Hell.

He could possibly get himself on the road to great things but is a bit erratic at the moment. Def uber talented though

After Gold, Rock n Roll and Demolition what next? Thinking about getting love is hell. Is 29 anygood?

Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights and 29 which were the 2005 trio were all really good.  They're alt. country, but Cold Roses is a little more rock-ish than the others.  They each have some standout tracks.  29 is the weakest of the three I think.

Rock N Roll does have some recycled tunes on it, but it's a decent record for the most part.  Some of the songs on there are decent rockers.

Heartbreaker is great, a classic album all around.

Gold is also a cool record...I love the first couple songs.

Demolition, I thought was the poppy-ist of the group, but it was okay, right up there with Love Is Hell.

Get Whiskeytown's Pneumonia album though.......some of his best writing was on that album.  Bar Lights is probably my fav. Ryan song there is.

He just recently produced some stuff on Willie Nelson's new album too.

If anyone can compete with Axl for being an asshole, this guy can....he's bi-polar and then some.  Very mean to his band and demands utter perfection from them.  He ripped his female bassist a new ass when she missed one note at a concert..."I wrote the song, I should fucking know how it goes".  But it makes for the music I guess.  I recommend getting his Austin City Limits performance.

29 is a great album, more country sounding.  Cold Roses is awesome too!!

you also should definitely get Heartbreaker and Whiskeytown's Stranger's Almanac.

those are my favorites!!!

I haven't listened to Ryan Adams for a few years now but the guy is an amazing singer\songwriter.  He even inspired Noel Gallagher to start performing a new version of Wonderwall with Oasis, which is my second favorite band, so it's cool to me. I can't remember the last Ryan Adams album I had but it was definitely an amazing album. I'm going to have to go hunt down 'Gold' since so many of you are giving it high praise.  I'll tell ya what I think of it in this thread sometime real soon.  I might go get it today, fuck it.  I'm in the mood for some Ryan Adams.

I remember reading an article in Rolling Stone ( I think) about somebody at his concert yelling, "play Summer of '69". Ryan pulled like $35 out of his pocket and gave it to the guy and told him to go home. Or something like that.  :hihi:

I'm sure he gets hassled a lot for sharing that namesake.

Love Is Hell is a great album.

That was the point.  "You want some Rock n Roll? Here's some Rock n Roll!"  I thought the record was a great conscious stab at the popular kinda rock of the time, a musical snapshot if you will.  And frankly, it's a better record than the Strokes could ever pull off.  "So Alive" & "Anybody Wanna Take Me Home?" are incredible.
