Title: Scent of a Woman (1992) Post by: HamsterDemocracy on September 20, 2006, 12:53:12 AM Has anyone seen this? Al Pacino won his first Best Actor Oscar for his work in the film. I actually did not like it at all the first time I saw it (I thought parts of it were okay), but it has truly grown on me with time. Chris O'Donnell delivers a really good performance - shame how his career went down the gutter. Pacino's a bit over-the-top but he is good. I like the small scenes like the one where they go to his family's for Thanksgiving or flirt with the girl at the restaurant. The part that ruins it for me is the ending, which is way too typical and corny. Pacino's speech is just unbelievable (in a bad way). Apart from that, a really nice, tender, and well-done story.

After reading the new book "In Conversation" (Pacino interviews from the past 25 yrs.) it seems Pacino is affected a lot by criticism, and I think after he won the Oscar for his role in this film he just started acting over-the-top in all his roles. If you compare Pacino now to the subtle, thoughtful Pacino from Serpico, it's hard to imagine it's even the same actor. Still brilliant, of course, but I don't think he's given a really memorable performance in a while. I dont know what he did before that, but this was the first movie that I took notice of him in. He is slowly but surely, in my opinion, becoming one of the best film actors around right now.
