He just had issues with self-confidence. He was guaranteed to win the election and only tapped the Democratic National Convention because he still wanted to know what they were saying/doing/planning. He was in a way like Howard Hughes and Axl in the sense that I think he was kind of reclusive, he was by far the most conflicted president we've ever had and definitely one of the most intriguing.
Apart from Watergate he did great stuff in foreign relations. I mean the man gets a bad rap all the time because of Watergate but if you look past that, he really was a great president in terms of what he actually did. Bush seems to severly lack in that area.
