Title: Christmas Democracy? (Rolling Stone speculates)
Post by: bazgnr on September 08, 2006, 08:27:29 PM
From the "Smoking Section" of the new Rolling Stone:

"Axl Rose celebrated on the West Side at Bungalow 8 with Sebastian Bach, Paris Hilton, Diddy, and Fergie.? Rose introduced The Killers, who closed the show, and whom he'd met the week before in Los Angeles and dug so much that he agreed to come out to the VMAs.

Backstage, Axl told us that Guns 'n Roses are currently scheduling U.S. tour dates (all right!) and that the long-delayed Chinese Democracy will be out this year.? So, Axl, is it a Christmas present? 'I can't say these things,' he said, smiling.? We'll sip some Blue Label for good luck and pray that happens..."

Personally, I'm glad for the positive spin - the RS writer is clearly excited about a U.S. G'nR tour, as well as anxious for the album to come out...

Looks like Rolling Stone is puckering up for Uncle Axl!! Hopefully they'll give Chinese Democracy a 5 star review.

So, Axl, is it a Christmas present? 'I can't say these things,' he said, smiling.  We'll sip some Blue Label for good luck and pray that happens..."

Its weird he almost makes it sound like it (album release) is out of his control

Which is probably a good thing  : ok:

I just think that lessons have been learned as far as announcing release dates, tour info., etc., before things are finalized, even if the intentions are good ones.  I don't know if many fans could handle another "it's happening...wait, no it isn't" experience at this point.

To me, "I can't say these things" just means "Not this time...I'm keeping quiet for now."  The smile is more telling than the words, perhaps.

I dunno I'm pretty used to that by now!

He could say something like 'the albums done, its all in the hands of the record company now' without giving away the date and most fans would be cool with that

I agree.  Even hearing "the album is done" would be great news.  Too many times over the years, though, it seems like we've gotten teased with (unofficial) misinformation from various sources, and it's been a frustrating experience for fans.  Remember the GnR Behind the Music that said November of '04?

But I'm used to it now as well.  I just think that Axl is being cautious to ensure that no bad information comes from him, which is simply a smart move.  Until the release date is announced, better to say nothing, I guess.

He's gonna look a right prick either way if it doesn't come out this year.

I don't mean that to be nasty, but the difference this year is that he has said it 2-3 times

My guess is he just wants to keep the guessing element right until the last minute

RS has always been positive about GNR.  However, if there is no album this year after all the hype, the touring, Axl saying this year ... I think we'll get our answer to when the album is coming out.

Oh I completely agree. If for some reason it should not ship by the end of the year, there's no amount of excuses Axl could throw out there that would make up for it.
