Title: Axl and Andrew Dice Clay
Post by: themovieaddict.com on August 29, 2006, 12:36:55 AM
Were they friends?

Clay was a controversial comedian back in the day. He was a sexist racist on-stage (it was a "character" or so he claimed) and was famous mostly for his crude nursery rhymes. He was basically a flavor of the month and faded into obscurity towards the mid-'90s. People today often look back and claim he was one of the worst comedians ever - I think it was Carlin who said he never told actual jokes - but if you have an immature sense of humor he's kind of funny.

I noticed in his (only) starring film, THE ADVENTURES OF FORD FAIRLANE (directed by Renny Harlin), a girl runs up to him at a party (in the movie) and mentions how she just got back from a "Guns N' Roses video wrap party."

After seeing this photo I was wondering if they were friends or if it was just kind of a passing thing?

Andrew Dice Clayu was and still is hilarious...he's SOOOO funny....one of the best ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so much so, that axl rose im sure loved him as well....he was tough to listen to if u were a nun or something, but otherwise, Dice was hysterical and im sure Axl recognized that talent...

dont let ANYONE tell u differently, Dice is one of the best ever, VERY FUNNY!! I can see Axl laughing hysterically at this guy, it would make sense.  and Ford Fairlane was stupid, but again, hysterical...and yes, i've heard Dice metnion Guns n Roses before.

Dice opened at the Rose Bowl on the GNR/Metallica tour but I don't think Axl was friends with him.

Howard Stern interviews Dice in 1990 and Dice said he hangs with Axl...........Dice is absolutely brilliant..Nobody considers him the worst comic unless they are morons

Funny. When I saw The Metallica GNR show at the Rose bowl. Andrew Dice Clay was actually one of the opening acts. Was really funny too. He came on after Metallica, did his act, and introduced GNR. I can't remember what he said exactly anymore. Something like "And now, for you Rock N Roll motherfuckers. The Baddest motherfuckers.. Guns N Fucking Roses! Oh!"

Oh holtzmn73 beat me to it. Eh anyway...

A lot of respected comedians hated him in his heyday and continue to hate him.

His comedy relied upon racial stereotypes, extreme sexism, and targeting women in the audience and talking about how big their hooters were. Then he came up with jokes like "Hicky dickory dock the girl sucked on my cock."

I own all his albums and think he's funny as far as immature humor goes, but he wasn't a brilliant comedian by any means.

oh please....Dice was brilliant....just watch him on CNN on youtube, many years later, when he curses on live television....he's hysterical....he's great at his industry, and to me...he is brilliant!

It's not brilliant when you go on a live, national show and start cursing and throwing a fuss for no reason. He looked like an asshole. The guy asked him if he had run a gym a few years ago and Dice completely over-reacted. It was part of his "character" - he was on a TV sitcom for a year where he played a normal, loving father and he was completely different then.

My favorite part in that whole exchange is when the CNN guy is just sitting there looking destroyed at the very end of the thing. He's DYING for them to fade to commerical and Dice has already stormed off long ago.

Right before they finally fade out you hear Dice from like 50 feet away yell "ASSHOLE GUY". It kills me every single time I see it.

I just saw Dice at the Improv in Hollywood, FL. Still funny. Yes he can be crude, but I love his shows where  he just improvs on the spot and messes with the crowd. Anyone can create a routine and spit it out night after night. I prefer someone who can think on their feet and still be funny.

That was a great one. That was where I really started to appreciate him beyond the Mother Goose ryhmes.

I was disappointed that I sat right infront of him at the Improv and didnt get fucked with once. I was hoping to have a bit of a back and forth with him :hihi:

Funny, crude, obnoxious.  Back in the day could sell out MSG.  He is still in Vegas last time I was there and makes 7 figures a year.   Not bad for a comedian who kinda lost his audience by the mid 90's.

Chalk me up as one of the Dice fans.

I don't THINK (at least, I've never heard) that Dice and Axl were friends.

Oh, and I love "The Day the Laughter Died", but, as good as it is, I still gravitate back to "The Dice Man Come-eth".

The guy WAS and Is one of the funniest comedians ever!  He made me laugh more back in the day than anyone else.  I have seen him live in Vegas and on HBO and to this day i still crack up at his stuff.

Axl couldn't go wrong with him introducing them!

Axl and Sam Kinison were kinda tight.  Kinison was Clay's competitor and used to bad-mouth him on stage from time to time.  I can imagine Sam giving Axl his opinion of Clay and clouding his judgment about him, but who knows.

Seeing as that's a promotional event for Dice and Axl had nothing to do with that album or the label (Def American) - I would have to say that Axl came in support as a friend.  Plus I have NEVER seen Dice light anybody else's smoke - exept the kid in Ford Failaine's smoke - which of course was a joke.

Or maybe Axl needed to hire "Mr. Rock N' Roll Detective" to get to the bottom of who was fucking with his rider.

Dice performing on MTV, got him Banned for LIFE!  I saw this live and was laughing my ass off!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLhx2K2rHBk

Also, some Axl Rose mentions from one of his albums, VERY appropriate to today, don't you think?

"People are driving me out of my mind with my fucking stupid rhymes that I hate to do. Don't get me wrong, when I first did them, it was creative. I'll tell you the way it is. A comic creates a bit, like a musician comes up with a song. If Axl Rose always only did 'Welcome To The Jungle,' and that's all he ever did, wouldn't you get fucking bored with it? So I came up with the poems, people really dug it, I did a few concert tours and I did the fucking poems. Now everywhere I go, people say, 'Do the poems.' No! I hate the fucking poems. You have no fucking idea how I feel about those fucking poems. I wish I never came up with the fucking poems. People come up to me in the mall, at the car wash, in the fucking supermarket, 'You know that poem you do, Little Miss Muffet?' 'No, I don't know it. I've done it fifty thousand fucking times in under four years, how the fuck don't I know it?' And then the guy looks at me like, 'Oh, you wanna have an attitude about it.'"

Hey, you know those nursery rhymes Dice invented? The real reason he got sick of performing them and said he wished he'd never come up with them is because he DIDN'T come up with them!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=G-uYw7hY5gc

 ;)

Anyway, back on topic - which album does he mention Axl on? I own all his albums but don't recall hearing that. Care to tell me which track it is?

i saw dice at msg when he filmed his "dice rules" movie. he was fucking great back then. now i think he's a washed up hack. for many years he was good friends with howard stern and then stern stopped having him on his show. so dice jumped on opie and anthony's back. then OA got fired and went to xm satelite radio so now dice is back on sterns show. seems like dice leeches onto others fame and tries to get some press off them.
