uh no.  I am not even going to begin to explain to you how it works.  But that is NOT how he would sound if he were singing right to your face. There is some compression and other things that are going on here.

Donnington was a big chance for the band to stamp the preconceptions out. They showed a lot of balls taking on that festival and they were rewarded with an array of technical errors and a brutal crowd.

Yet they still won the fuckers over in the end. A landmark GNR show.

yeah, but donnington is important to axl... so axl was gettin at the sound guys for fucking up and stuff and making a complete fuck up of his/tha bands most important show.

I work with sound ,basically in a nut shell his voice hits a pa effects ?box before it hits the speakers in a arena or coleisumn.This is uncompressed vocal sound .Like how you talk in the morning on a phone just after you wake up.

I remember, probably in the Pittsburgh '02 soundboards, when Axl screws up near the end of Rocket Queen. The band covers up for him nicely, playing the 'Here I am' -part twice, so that he can get back on track. Afterwards, he rants a bit, saying: "I just had a fuck-up with Mr Tom Mayhue, doing his job well there!"

So it's most likely water under the bridge, a heat of the moment kind of thing. Tom should know how to handle these things by now.  ;D

This Tom is starting to sound quite a guy... maybe he's more Guns n Roses than Pitman  : ok:

It was also the first big show in front a UK audience, a precursor to the UK gigs in July. Even when looking at the big picture, I'd rank Download right up there with RIR5 and Rock Am Ring. So I'd say Axl had a good reason to be worried.

Notice the 'asshole' comment before Better, then take a look at the video. Axl's standing still for the whole song, he was major-league pissed right about then.

These things always make the voices sound so BAD....do like the little privant rant Axl has going.  Reminds me of seeing him backstage during the show crushing everything in site because his mic went out on Oh My God.  Great Memory.

Reminds me of the time I was backstage and Axl came storming out of his dressing room and walked straight up to me and said, "Are you the sound guy?"

Look, there's a wild alligator in my dressing room drying to eat my bits n' pieces if you catch my drift, and I don't need no motherfuckin' alligator trying to run off with my dick before a performance! "It's trying to eat my special place!"

He locked me in his dressing room and wouldn't open the door. Merck came over and said, "Axl, let the nice man out."

Im not so sure its cool to hear him pissed off, but his rants rock all the same!. Im just glad the show went on .

    (on a side note its kinda funny cause last night at work I went on a huge rant, someone took my dvd of Rock Am ring outta the dvd player in the back dining room at my restuarant, I went balsitic , on everyone and thier mother.lol cussing up a storm, yellng at the manager and others,no one would fess up! , turned out it was my manager, dumb ass! Well I dont think hell fuck with my GNR DVDs anymore!. )

Then I come home to hear Axl ranting at people who work for him , funny stuff!

At that stage Axl had walked off stage, Ron strolled over to one of the bakcing mics and joined in with Tommy/Dizzy etc who were singing the backing parts (it's them you can here quieter in the background).  For some reason the mic Ron was using is really loud in Axl's mix, I'm sure it wasn't that high at the Festival.  For the record, I think he sounds good!

Axl is always having issues with mic packs. There either falling off or he is tampering with the switches. Maybe it is about time for some company to design a new Axl proof mic pack.

I just listened to the entire concert and Axl says some pretty funny shit in between songs......At the end of - I Used to love her - he yells "what a fuckin' mess!!" And the end of the solo before PC he says to someone "get me plane tickets to New York, NOW!!" I think it's pretty funny....

it's both funny and dramatic. Dramatic because sometimes Axl acts like a 12 years old children. "give me this, nah give me that! if I don't get it I go home!"... hey, life is not so easy Axl. When shit happens, act like an adult not like a children. anyway, it was probably a bad day and a bad crowd who knows? I've always said pure metal-heads crowd like this one is not right for GN'R. crowds are different and people are different. Things happen way better when the crowd is more a basic Rock crowd like Rock in Rio or Rock am Ring, more Rock and less Metal. generally Metal festivals have more extreme crowds and all i can say is that GN'R ain't into that pure metal scene. Never was and never will be.

That had nothing to do with it....the band sounded like total shit at times because of obvious sound problems.....that's all......I understand what you are saying but I don't think Donnington applies. They knew GNR was there and they stayed to watch them. They played and Axl sang MUCH better as the tour progressed. Thank God.

GNR seems to have more sound problems than many other performers.  People need to be held accountable if they are not doing their job right.  Axl was pissed, but he probably had a right to be.  If the sound guys aren't getting the job done right get new ones.

There's a hell of a lot of conversations going on in the background at various stages - at the end of SCOM for example, but someone would have to use headphones, crank it up a little, etc to make it out. I'll bet there's some fascinating tslk going on. I might have a closer listen.

Listening to this monitor mix you can definitely hear that his vocal chords have taken strain from all the hard singing back in the day. When he says "Good for you buddy" it's really high-pitched and doesn't sound too much like Axl. Ditto for when he says "Stupid idiot" during the YCBM rant. He actually sounds younger.  ???

Well....he is unlucky......aren't we all.....I believe, and always have, that he wants to save his vocals and his voice for the show....he wants to keep his voice as fresh as possible so it will last for 2+ hours of screaming your lungs out. He does vocal exercises to warm up and then he goes on. He has a very unorthadox voice.....so he has his reasons......I am not stating a fact, only an opinion that might only be worth dog shit.......have a beautiful day.

This is what Axl hears in his ears. Thats why his voice is so much louder than everything else. This is not a soundboard or what the audience is hearing.

Just about every rock singer is using mixes now....it brings a more powerful sound and can help you out a little when your voice is in bad shape so the show won't suffer as much.....Scott Wyland does it as well...

O RLY. I don't know what it's like France, who knows, maybe the metal fans over there act really horribly, but at least in my country they're always the ones who are on their best behavior, and truly there for the music. Take for example Tuska Open Air, Finland's biggest metal festival. During eight years of existence, never had any troubles; no fights or any other crimes committed whatsoever. It's the cleanest festival in the country, whereas the more generic festivals (dedicated to pop and rock music) always create some work for the police.

It sorta is....it's really not that black and white.....way too much for me to write exactly what is going on there....it also depends on the song they're playing.....
