Title: Sweet Child... wtf!
Post by: Queen of Everything on August 27, 2006, 05:10:15 PM
Ok I have heard two live versions of Sweet Child over the last few weeks, and for some reason the Intro sounds totally wacked?!  The first band's rhythm was too loud but also the lead sounded totally off key or something??

Then I saw the second band do it, and this was a professional touring band, and they sounded equally as weird?

I was wondering (because Im horrid with guitars) why did they sound so off key?  Was it something to do with wah wah??   ???

Thankssss!!  ;D

maybe they were not tuned down 1/2 step and playing in standard tuning...

Thats most likely it. All the GnR Tabliature books I have all say to tune down a 1/2 step

tuned down a half step will help, but lots of people dont realize some other things are very important. if i was going to play the intro of sweet child to a live audience, id make sure of a few things...

first off, a gibson les paul....use the top (rhythm, or AKA neck) pick-up...keep the volume knob at 10. keep the tone knob at about 5...this is crucial!!!!

next, turn your amp's gain/distortion up to about 7...u dont want too much, u want clarity, but creamy gain as well.

Bass at about 6

Mids at about 5

Highs at about 8

Presence at about 5 or so...

next....if its live....make sure u use lots of reverb.....the intro riff, by itself, is very naked and empty....the notes need weight. so use reverb, id say at about 6. thats alot, but its ok for the intro.

also, IF u want, you CAN add some delay into the mix, b/c as i said, the riff by itself sits alittle empty and might sound "weird" as the original poster said....so, if u are playing this live, adding alittle bit of delay, with hardly any delay repeats....just the first delay....tap it out to match the BPM, which are 120 i think for SCOM. add alittle bit of delay to smooth the sound out, but turn it off after the intro....but keep the delay light.....but again, add that reverb to let the notes sit better...

Chorus is used on the verses....and im not sure if its Slash or Izzy using the chorus.

NO CHORUS on the intro, leads, solo's...just the verses, one guitar....im thinking its Izzy's....dont forget though, there is slash, izy and an acoustic as well....there might even be a 4th guitar in the verses.

I play half step down and it sounds pretty good. Izzy makes the chorus I think. And...I really won't play Sweet Child O'Mine live...my opinion...

ive played SCOM out live about 100 times or more...it works, as long as number one: u have a great singer that can hold his own, then the guitarist (me) needs to know about Slash's tone, and then of course, be able to pull off the lead parts. i play the two leads after the chorus' just like slash, i play the begining of the solo note for note, the run up on the A chord is always tricky, so i improv that, then its back to note for note, until the end of the solo. robin does his own thing at the end of the solo, and i kinda do the same, my own thing....
