Title: Von- The joke band that changed the world Post by: Walk on August 13, 2006, 07:24:26 PM Let me get this out of the way first. Von does NOT stand for Victory, Orgasm, Nazi. That rumor started because Varg Vikernes, the man behind Burzum, couldn't pronounce the name well over the phone due to his strong accent, so he used those three words to help spell out the band's name. This band's music might have been "terrible", even by black metal standards, but it was unique and extremely influential for its time.
In all likelihood, the band was created to make fun of Bathory, Venom, Sodom, and other "first wave" black metal bands. The vocals are indecipherable, every song has the same pounding drumbeat, repetitive riffs, and cheap production. However, all of this makes some really, pure evil music that would encourage so many others to go on to create more complex works of the art. For a band formed in 1986, Von were very, very ahead of their time. Of course, even in the age of the internet, very little is known about this band, except that they were extremely important to the development of 2nd wave black metal. The single disc Satanic Blood Angel has all of their recorded tracks, as well as many live tracks. I'd recommend hearing it so you'll know where so many black metal bands were inspired.
