Guns N' Roses singer visits cancer charity
Surprise visit to the Teenage Cancer Trust
Guns n' Roses singer Axl Rose has made a surprise visit to the Teenage Cancer Trust Ward at the University College Hospital in London.

The singer had just completed Guns N' Roses' controversial European tour, culminating with a final date at Wembley Arena a week last Sunday (July 30).

Simon Davies the CEO of the Teenage Cancer Trust Ward said: "We were so touched that Axl wanted to visit the Teenage Cancer Trust ward in London.

"Axl spent time speaking with each of the patients individually asking about their diagnosis and treatment, and what they enjoyed doing when they were not in hospital. Speaking with patients after Axl's visit, I got a real sense of just how excited they were to have met him and how much it lifted their spirits."

The Teenage Cancer Trustis known for its strong links with rock music. Each year The Who singer Roger Daltrey produces a week of shows at the Royal Albert Hall, which this year featured Bloc Party and Razorlight.

Did I miss something?? What the hell was controversial about it?? Does the media still have their panties in a bunch over Axl getting sick and having to leave the stage on the last night of a widely successful tour?

Very cool thing for Axl to do. ?: ok:

And it gives me the opportunity to suggest something very cool we can all do to help out beautiful kids like those and others like them - BECOME A BLOOD DONOR!!! (or better yet a platelets donor)? It's fast, safe and painless.? Donating whole blood takes less than a half hour start to finish.? Donating platelets takes about an hour and a half to two hours.?? It really does help save lives.? ??

I do just love to see this kind of thing! Especially when a lot of celebrities go and visit a hospital and they then plaster the pics all over Hello or OK magazine or something like that! This makes it look like a real publicity stunt rather than what Axl has done here which seemed to be done on the quiet and away from the tabloids eye which shows that he really wanted to do this for the patients! Fair play on you Mr Rose you are the man! Plain and Simple!! Mike

this is awesome, i was just comenting with mandygnr yesterday how Axl didn't seem approachable since he's always flying his jet to all these elitist parties and all that. but this still shows the man knows when to have fun and knows when to be a man of the people sort to speak. very cool for him to take his free time and do something that can actually make a huge difference on the lifes of cancer patients...

This sounds beautiful but i have to say a press release for such a move is /was not needed. It destroys the actual result of it, i really critisize footballers or other artists who are ok with press releases being made for their "surprise visits".

Title: Re: Axl visit Cancer patients in London after tour
Post by: mlewis on August 11, 2006, 12:46:53 PM
There is no press release for this that I've seen, just some in the press have picked it up a few days later, probably from a bulletin from UCH itself; hospitals often send out these kind of things to supporters as part of their own PR.

That made my day.  It's awesome to see him with those kids.  Those kids are pretty fucking young and to have cancer at that age (or any age for that matter) is really, really hard.  They all look happy though and that's all that really matters.  I've lost so many family members and good friends to cancer, young and old, so this really makes me respect Axl even more.  Axl, you are the fuckin' man...

Not to get too maudlin here, but I lost my sister to cancer in April of this year. She was a fellow GNR fan (we saw MSG NYC 2002 together-her only time seeing the band old or new). 35 years old.

She was diagnosed in 2001 with Stage 4 colorectal, but bless her soul, she beat a lot of odds to live as long as she did.

She's looking down on this and probably thinkin' "OH MAN!". I did play her "Better" and "IRS" when she was in the hospital. She really dug them! At least she got to hear some new stuff.

Hey, never be afraid to go get a check up. It's never too early to make sure. And never be afraid to lend a hand to someone with cancer who needs help. Yeah, being a caretaker can really suck sometimes. But try to be there as much as you can.

Wow I've been away for a week and come back to perhaps the most positive GNR news I've read on this board.  For Axl to do that was amazingly great considering his reclusive track record.  I couldn't be more proud of him.  Cancer also took away my grandma this last christmas....the woman raised me by herself and brought me up and was also my best friend....so my deepest thoughts go out to all that have lost someone from it.

Now let's see how long it is before the press spins a negative spin on this story however.

Kudos Axl....very humble of you

Lets support the cancer people next time they knock on our doors.
I realize you said this with only the best possible intentions but unfortunately alot of these organizations do NOT use the money collected for the purposes they were intended for.? YOU HAVE TO BE VERY VERY CAREFUL WHO YOU DONATE TO!!!? Any legit organization will have the breakdown on their website of what precentage of monies collected were actually used for patient care and/or research or for administrative fees, etc.

Is it just me, or did you guys feel all warm and fuzzy inside when you saw the pics of the smiling boys?
In 1970, my 10-year-old brother (who passed in 1973) was one of the kids that Joe Namath (American Football NY Jets quarterback) visited in the hospital.? I can tell youze from experience that the joy celebrities like Joe and Axl brings to these kids is something the families will be eternally grateful to them for.??:)

P.S.? The Jets were reigning Super Bowl Champs that year.? ;D

This has to be the most positive news for Guns N Roses in a very long time. Axl needs to have stories like this in the spot-light for the press. We all know and have heard the stories of Axl being one of the kindest, gentle people but the media likes to print the negative. Cancer is very scary and it takes a tool on those sick with the disease and also their familes. I'm very proud of Axl for taking the time to speak with the patients. We need more good news like this.
For this band to be successful again, not only do they need a kick ass album, a successful tours, and some kind hearted actions like this.

that was very nice of him.

This is an awesome thing for Axl to do and kudos to him for doing it. I think people fail to realies how much things like this mean to the people who are stuck in hospitals. In fact  think even if a complete stranger went in to chat it woudl amke their day. Obviously not to the same extent but you know what I mean.

What makes me laugh is the hugely overwhelming positive response from everyone here yet when it comes to Bono's never ending charity work or any celebrity's charity work for that matter, a huge amount(not all) of you think it's all for publicity.  This is damn awesome that Axl took the time to do this but wow would it ever be nice to have some consistency from the fans. :peace:

This has to be the most positive news for Guns N Roses in a very long time. Axl needs to have stories like this in the spot-light for the press. We all know and have heard the stories of Axl being one of the kindest, gentle people but the media likes to print the negative. Cancer is very scary and it takes a tool on those sick with the disease and also their familes. I'm very proud of Axl for taking the time to speak with the patients. We need more good news like this.
For this band to be successful again, not only do they need a kick ass album, a successful tours, and some kind hearted actions like this.

Maybe we should send an e-mail with this story to the newspapers? Shall we do that?

No Axl dont need that stories and he dont need to be compeared with other charity assholes. Axl just do what he do and like to do, no matter what he "need" to be popular in the media.

Can someone please translate this for me???????
As to what your talking about Axl needs the media on his side. No matter what we as fans are going  to support this band through think or thin but we arnt the ones who are going to make then successful. The ordinary every day consumer are the ones who we will need the help from to  put this band back into the top. The best place to start is positive spin from the media and this story is a good start.

P.S.? The Jets were reigning Super Bowl Champs that year.? ;D

Thanks for sharing that beautiful story! Did you ever see the movie SOMETHING FOR JOEY? That movie inspired me to be  a pediatric nurse! The first cancer patient that I loved and lost was a liitle boy named Andrew. His mother said that one of the most exciting things to happen to her as a teenager was to meet Joe Namathe at Soldier Field. He wouldn't give her an autograph but he did give her a kiss and a photo with him.

I am very critical of Axl, but this was a great thing for him to do whether he was asked to do it or not.

On a side note I always wondered how many times GNR (new and old especially) were requested by some child for the Make a Wish Foundation.  GNR were the biggest band in the world in the early nineties and I am sure some kids out there requested to meet GNR, Axl, Slash, etc.  Does anyone know if there are any stories about GNR and Make a Wish?  Its something I have always been curious about!

Cancer also took away my grandma this last christmas....the woman raised me by herself and brought me up and was also my best friend....so my deepest thoughts go out to all that have lost someone from it.
Sounds like you're Grandma was a really cool lady!!!? Whether the person was my brother's age or snead hearn's sister's age or bill213's grandma's age, it's amazing what a profound influence they've made ... and are still making ... on lives of all the peoples they've touched.
This reminded me of that poll recently in a ELLE girl magazine where Grandparents were voted #1 coolest old people and Axl came in #2.? :headbanger:

Not that Axl is really that old or anything? :P

love axl's smile on the pic.. that's a real smile, not just for the cameras.. like the popstars today would have done. i think when popstars does things like this it's to make them more poular and their management told them to do it.. but axl prolly wanted to do this himself..

gotta love him

I hope right before they fire her for being such an asshole, Ms. Goodman's bosses tells her that those kids knew exactly who "that guy" was ... especially the kid wearing the AFD tee.

That Elizabeth Goodman is really annoying.

She even "confirmed" that false report about the roast lamb dinner.

This is ridiculous.  Everyone knows who Axl is, and if they don't know who Axl is, they know Welcome to the Jungle, because that song is iconic.  But good point about the t-shirt... like he said "I don't know who that guy was, but I'm wearing a GNR shirt."
I have been critical of Axl's behavior before, but in this case, he can't win.  He does something nice, and the media makes him look a joke.  They want him to be a has-been so badly.

I think the Rolling Stone piece was tongue and cheek, and not meant to be negative.  They linked to a great story!  No need to overreact.  Most of the little jabs in the media are not as ill-natured as many here think--come to think of it, the media jabs at every celebrity.  This was very decent of Axl, and is not being panned by anyone.  Chill out folks--let the meeting be the news--and don't let a kind gesture become some sort of controversy.

I agree but I still think this reporter was trying to be obnoxious. Maybe some of the kids weren't familiar with GNR. We have had members of professional sports teams visit our hospital and I don't recognize all of them as I am not that into sports.

I agree that it was meant as tongue-in-cheek, but - while I'm not worked up/angry over it - I still don't think it's necessarily appropriate...

hey-just want to catch up and say a big THANK YOU to all the well wishes sent my way. I was actually away for the weekend with friends of my sister, raising a few and chilling out.

In following back, Axl did this to lend support, fully realizing his star-status would carry the story. Bless him for this. If Rolling Stone wants to get creative about it, let them. No reason to get pissed at that. I mean, when was the last time Jann Wenner or Wenner Publishing did anything that made news, philanthropic or otherwise? The only news that Jann Wenner makes is Page Six with whatever boy toy he has this summer.

And to all of you: Isn't it great to go on this long winding trip called GNR? Life is too good to mess around, and goodness knows living our lives with this band, and Axl these days, has been challenging. But from an escapist point of view, I'll take it, in heaping amounts.

Okay, enought babling. But, again, my most appreciative thank yous to all the well-wishes.

By the way, I also have some serious problems, not cancer though but health problems anyway, and the only time I feel really happy is when I paly GN'R on the guitar, I listen to GN'R and when I saw Axl did that stuff on the news section.
