Title: Rolling Stones "Sway" / GN'R connection
Post by: jarmo on August 09, 2006, 06:49:03 PM
As you might have heard/read GN'R covered Sway by the Rolling Stones at the July 29th show in London, UK.

The song appears on the Sticky Fingers album which was released in 1971.

But did you know the guy who is credited for the strings is one Paul Buckmaster?

Here's the rumored GN'R connection:

Acclaimed orchestral arranger and Grammy-award winner Paul Buckmaster has apparently worked on arrangements for four songs that are slated to appear on the long-awaited GUNS N' ROSES album, "Chinese Democracy". According to Buckmaster's official discography/list of credits, which can be viewed at this location, he has served as the arranger and conductor on the tracks "Blues", "Twat", "Madagascar" and "Prostitute", all of which are expected to surface on the much-anticipated CD, due next year via Interscope.

Hmm, how coincidental. They may not have even realized it...

:hihi:  and what next year was this again?

Does The Blue and Madagascar have orchestration?

What was the rumored track title he described as being like 'Fire and Ice'?

I thought the rumored track details were different w/ the exception of Prostitute.

Amusingly, he was also the conductor and arranger in The Darkness' sophomore album One Way Ticket to Hell and Back, which was produced by Roy Thomas Baker, who worked on CD in '00-'02.

Axl's probably been going back and forth his undoubtedly huge record shelf, picking up stuff he'd like and contacted the production people to add some of that into his own material. Looking at their credits, the people involved in the production so far are pretty much an all-star group!

What was the rumored track title he described as being like 'Fire and Ice'?

Prostitute, I think.

What an anti-climax...working on GN'R then going to work with THE DARKNESS!! The darkness are a disgrace.

Not to be mean, but to ask your first question, I would guess that you have not even heard the songs you are talking about....

c'mon people, at least know what you are talking about....

Maybe I dont know the definition of orchestra.

Do the horns in Madagascar and piano in The Blues qualify as an orchestra?

Or am I missing something?

The Blues could easily do without any orchestration.

And Nuts, you can tell very easily what on Madagascar is; all that crap going on. And I've gotta say, the song needs it.....

The date on the news bit the article was originally included in is November 23rd, 2004.

By the article's prediction, Chinese Democracy is only a year late.

Considering that 2006 is already more than half over, let's hope that their prediction is only a year late.? :-X

Yeah but at least there work sees the light of day...

Well, better if "One Way Ticket to Hell" had never surfaced, in my opinion.   Very cool to hear more confirmation that CD has not only been worked on, but is progressing closer to a release date as well...

Haven't they done fool's cry and paint it black? oh shut the fuck up, tank! :-X

Althought I don't remember the contents of them well, underneath the zipper and velvet underground's banana, there were disappointments, for anyone I assume.
Wait, didn't we have sticky fingers as a board mate here?  Or was his name lies? : ;D

or a year earlier? sorry I'm confused.

your plan.  >:( I've been had. :coffee:

'Madagascar' obviously has lots of orchestration, but as far as 'The Blues', if they put the newer, more stripped-down version on the album, I'm sure Paul's work won't be there...

It probably will be there, but better if he wasn't  :-\

This would really be a great song to add to their set all the time or record for an album. Great lyrics that fit Axl and Gnr in general perfect. Here is some more info on the song....and ps, Jarmo, you stole my thunder on the Buckmaster connection! I mentioned this first when I heard they covered it in London-only one person responded ;D-I guess I don't hold as much "Sway" as you do.  :hihi: Finally, note that Keith Richards doesn't play guitar on this track yet he gets a writing credit. Interesting..at least to me.

Recorded in April & May, 1970. Released April 23, 1971 on the album Sticky Fingers
Lead Vocal & Rhythm Guitar: Mick Jagger Electric Lead Guitar: Mick Taylor Bass: Bill Wyman Piano: Nicky Hopkins Drums: Charlie Watts Backing Vocals: Keith Richards Strings: Paul Buckmaster

SWAY
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Did you ever wake up to find
A day that broke up your mind
Destroyed your notion of circular time

It's just that demon life has got you in its sway
It's just that demon life has got you in its sway

Ain't flinging tears out on the dusty ground
For all my friends out on the burial ground
Can't stand the feeling getting so brought down

It's just that demon life has got me in its sway
It's just that demon life has got me in its sway

There must be ways to find out
Love is the way they say is really strutting out

Hey, hey, hey now
One day I woke up to find
Right in the bed next to mine
Someone that broke me up with a corner of her smile, yeah

It's just that demon life has got me in its sway
It's just that demon life has got me in its sway

It's just that demon life has got me in its sway
It's just that demon life has got me...

It's just that demon life has got me...

I just realized the little connection while looking up lyrics for the song.....
