Title: Axl and Morrissey
Post by: Mom on August 07, 2006, 05:47:23 PM
Since we're not being hit by a flurry of news, setlists etc. for (hopefully) a little while I thought a threat like this might be appropiate.

Lately I've been thinking about the amazing amount of similarities between two of my favorite artists; Axl Rose and Morrissey. On the surface there might not be too many similarities but here are some things off the top of my head to consider...

1. Both hit it big in the 80's.

2. Both have abrubtly canceled shows/tours.

3. Both went into exile from the industry beginning in the 90's, and both served it out in mansions in LA.

4. Both have very distinctive voices.

5. Both have very distinctive hair.

6. Both have been accused of racism.

7. Both have have publicly feuded/trashed other mucisians (and both have had troubles with David Bowie)

8. Both have distinctive dance moves.

9. Both have feuded with the press.

10. Both had issues with Christianity from their up bringing.

11. Both of their Greatest Hits charted higher in the UK (and fo that matter, both are possibly bigger in Europe than the US at the moment).

12. Both have had much made over their issues w/ their sexuality.

13. Both have significant Latin fanbases.

14. Both awesome at writing deeply personal lyrics.

15. People tend to be love/hate when it comes to their feelings towards both.

That's all I got now. Eerie...

Mr. Bootlegs, I think Axl punched him when Guns were filming a video or something.  But I think they made up afterwards.

Morrissey is such pretentious moaning faced git.

Title: Re: Axl and Morrissey
Post by: Mom on August 07, 2006, 07:23:11 PM
Yeah Axl jawed Bowie because he thought he was being too friendly with Erin. I believe they later made up and Bowie told Axl "your art comes from hate" or somehting along those lines.

Moz can be a dick sometimes, but like with Axl I take the good with the bad as from where I'm sitting it's all wrapped up together.

16: they were seated together at an elton john bash

 ::)

but yea, i find morrissey (and the smiths - the band, not the various families) quite repulsive. his self-constructed obnoxiousness really is revolting in its infantilism and its really quite pointless save to sell records.

Interesting links, but realistically those comparisons could apply to many singers. And Morrissey's "exile" didnt last too long.

Also, whats with the sexuality thing? Ive never heard anyone question Axl's heterosexuality with any good reason.

I like both by the way.

I was thinking the same exact thing, if you try hard enough you can probably compare any 2 people the same way.  If you have enough free time to do such things....

Liam Gallagher and Axl Rose would be a better comparison. Two bad ass rock n roll singers who have problems with authority.

I could be a **** and point out one distinct difference.  Only one of the two tried to forge ahead as a solo act with the name of the original band he made famous.  :)

Actually - both have vehemently resisted reunions with the original members - and both have a lot of animosity between the lead guitarist and themselves.

Both have SERIOUSLY devoted fans - almost obsessed fans, really.
Both are half-crazy.
Both are incapable of having long-term relationships.

One other difference..... Axl's still a little bit crazy and reclusive.  Morrissey is BORN BORN BORN.

I like both by the way.

He wasn't off the scene for long by the high standards set by Axl, but still pretty long for someone of his stature

I should have been more clear on the sexuality thing, I meant how much has been made about Axl having issues (mostly misogyny) with women, while people wonder if Moz like them at all...although I think that one should be pretty obvious for anyone who has ever actually listened to his lyrics, especially "Dear God Please Help Me" of his last disc.

While I don't think anyone would seriously question Axl's hetrosexuality both are big fans of gay icons. Moz: James Dean, Oscar Wilde, Jobriath, and probably some others I'm leaving out. Axl: Elton John, Queen.

Anyway I found the similarities uncanny, if someone has someone else with whom Axl shares so many similarities I'd be genuinely interested to hear them.

You can't lump in Liam Gallagher with Axl and Morrissey.

Liam was the best frontman in the world for a couple of years circa 94-96 but then his limitations (ie Noel's songwriting ability) were proven and he's gonna spend the rest of his years being a  parody of himself. Having seen Oasis at Glastonbury 2004 I can attest to this.

As for the Axl/Morrissey comparisons. Well, Moz had a consistent solo output until 1997 and then disappeared for a long period of time....

...Only to re-emerge in 2004 and be more popular than ever.

Perhaps someone has been taking notes in his mansion.  :D

They're both involved with Sanctury....

Although yeah on the surface not very similar at all.

I did hear Axl recently attended a Morissey gig (back stage) in London, so maybe Axl is intrigued by Morrissey...?!? Stranger things have happened at sea....

But seriously the Smiths were fantastic.

I seem to remember Morrissey being very dismissive in some interview a whiel back when the issue of attacking people in song came up, specificaly "Get In The Ring."

Oh and in the interest of scraping the bottom of the barrell, Axl has/had his left nipple pierced, Morrissey has a bandaid over his left nipple in the "November Spawned A Monster" video....maybe Axl swiped it off him?

Axl had his nipple pierced since around '85/86, and when I looked up 'November Spawned A Monster', it came out around '89/90

Morrissey is eccentric, not pretentious. I have the pleasure of seeing both Axl and Morrissey within one month of each other. If it makes Guns fans feel any better, Morrissey fans (in general) wouldn't like Axl either.

Because Bolton isn't nearly as interesting a character as Morrissey and there aren't nearly as many similarities between the two that spring to mind.

Yeah no call for any aggro on this forum, we're all here for a chat and discussion. Cool your jets, please. Anyway, yeah Axl and Morrissey are both fantastic lyricists and singers, just different styles. I don't like putting a label on music. Its all music afterall.  I'd very much like to hear Morrissey sing a GnR song, likewise Axl singing a Smiths or Morrissey song. Hang the DJ! Hang the DJ! Aow!! :peace:

I love both Axl and Morrissey, i remeber i saw morrisey about 4 years ago at metros in the city, about a month after i saw axl in london actually, both concerts rocked, although obviously seeing axl was the greatest concert experience of my life. So yeah i love the smiths and i love GNR. AS for Axl and Moz havin anythin in common, well there both amazing lyricists and front men.

I agree that's the Moz song I'd like to hear, his voice is seen as too whiney by many to do something like "How Soon Is Now." If Moz was going to Axl (eww not like that, pervs) I'd like to hear "Estranged" hands down, except I can't imagine any of the mucisians he has worked with doing the guitar parts justice.

The only thing more annoying than Morrissey singing one of his own songs, would be hearing him sing a GnR song. Morrissey is the godfather of emo and is in no way comparable to W. Axl Rose. Axl is comparable to other great frontmen like Jagger, Plant, and Morrison, not some whiney little emo-fag like Morrissey.

Title: Re: Axl and Morrissey
Post by: Mom on August 10, 2006, 12:03:05 AM
Oddly enough "emo fag" was the phrase Nikki Sixx used a couple months ago to describe Axl. Axl is obviously comparable to guys like Jagger, Plant, etc. What I find interesting is his similarities to an artist with whom one would not normally asscociate Axl with like the afore mentioned singers whom Axl is compared to as a matter of course.

Bah...screw Morrissey and screw the Smiths. Its a major insult to compare that jackass to Axl in any way, shape, or form.

How about Axl and Eddie Vedder. They were both raised thinking their step fathers were their biological fathers. They both found out around the age of 17, that in fact, who they thought were their biological fathers, were in fact their step fathers. They also found out that their real fathers were dead. Both Axl and Eddie hated their abusive step dads and changed their surnames after finding out the truth. The Pearl Jam song "Alive" is about this discovery. What are the odds that two of the biggest singers of the last 20 years share the exact same traumatic experience.

I don't think so.  isn't he singing about axl in "what she said"?
Could be his fans would..like axl fans here, while perhaps axl even attended a morrissey concert.

I'd very much like to hear Morrissey sing a GnR song, likewise Axl singing a Smiths or Morrissey song. Hang the DJ! Hang the DJ! Aow!! :peace:

axl singing "When you say it's gonna happen "now"
well, when exactly do you mean?
see I've already waited too long
and all my hope is gone ?" would be too ironic.

Fans might throw eggs at Axl, Na but he should change the lyrics if he dare to sing the song :peace:
Likewise I'd love to hear GNR versions of Shakopee's sister, Queen is dead, Miserable Lie, etc but with slightly, nay totally different words. the lyrics are partly inappropriate for Axl.

"Big mouth" and "a boy with a thorn in his side (Imagine axl's yodelling)" would be my recommend. Otherwise, "a Crack on the head", "What Difference Does It Make? (And surely some would be convinced that this is about slash!)" "London"...."I Started Something I Couldn't Finish :hihi:"

I'm not into solos. :peace:

i'm a huge axl fan but i have to admit;  morrissey's lyrics are much better, darker and funnier. on the other hand, axl has a much better voice and makes better music.
have seen guns n roses and morrissey twice this summer. all good shows!
