Title: Bassist from The Offspring clears up "Chinese Democracy" controversy
Post by: DunkinDave on August 02, 2006, 04:27:33 PM
This is from March 2004, but I think it's worth posting since I constantly see people saying that Axl sued Offspring and all sorts of BS to keep them from using "Chinese Democracy" as an album title.

To summarize, The Offspring issued a press release saying their new album would be called "Chinese Democracy" as a joke. Axl got wind of this and overreacted, having his lawyers send a threatening letter to The Offspring. Axl did this despite the fact that it is not possible to copyright or trademark an album title, and Offspring could have used the title without legal consequence.

Thats funny because I have an interview with Dexter Holland(their singer) from Kerrang in which he said that the lawsuit/lawyer stuff was bullshit, fabricated by the media. He said he kept reading in the media that Axl was pissed and was going to sue. Dexter said he never heard from Axl or his lawyers.

I am not fond of Offspring's music.  (See how nicely I put that?)

I never heard about Axl threatening to sue. I heard he was pissed but accepted they could call their album Chinese Democracy.  ;)

Maybe if the Offspring had called their album "Chinese Democracy" it would have sold more than 5 copies.

Yea but Dexter also complained about Axl copying his cornrows, so he is still an asshole.

Shame that it was utter shite. I'm familiar with all the Offspring albums and Splinter was just total crap.
