Guns N' Roses Pillage Europe
On this day, July 30th, 2006, Guns N' Roses will finish their 33 date European Tour in which an approximate 320,000 tickets were sold (this number excludes the 10 festival dates played). This awe-inspiring summer saw over 700,000 fans attend one of the most acclaimed Rock N' Roll shows in the planet.

This 2006 incarnation of Guns N' Roses is composed of Axl Rose (Vocals/Piano), Robin Finck (Guitar), Ron Thal a.k.a. Bumblefoot (Guitar), Richard Fortus (Rhythm Guitar), Tommy Stinson (Bass), Dizzy Reed (Keyboards), Brain Mantia(Percussion), and Chris Pittman (Synth/Effects). During these last months this band has more than proven that they can brake the sword of malice, which the press has repeatedly tried to impale the group in.

This tour proved to be a succesful return for W. Axl Rose after secluding from the spotlight after the events of the ill-fated 2002 Chinese Democracy World Tour. This singer, legendary in many people's eyes, brought a sense of ferocity back into the art of arena based musical performances.

Rose performing in Madrid, Spain

Although, of course, as every fan of this tenacious band knows; no Guns N' Roses tour is fully free of danger. On the first date of the tour the crowd in Madrid, Spain was to the point of riot as the band went on to play 2 hours late using "technical difficultes" as an excuse. Also, after an endearing performance of Sweet Child O' Mine on the night of the Download Festival Tommy Stinson was hit by a bottle, which enraged the bassist into a Rose-like rant addressing the crowd of the issue. Rose seemed angered himself as he showed an emotionless pose during the performance of one of the groups new songs "Better". Although, after the addition of Guns N' Roses legend, Izzy Stradlin, the show turned into one of the best of the tour.

During the middle of the tour a show in Z?rich, Switzerland was postponed due to the near birth of Mantia's (percussion) new child. Mantia left the tour in order to be with his pregnant wife, and understudy drummer Frank Ferrer filled in for Brain at this point.

Guitarist Robin Finck joined the band in mid-1997

After a sold-out show in Stockholm, Sweden Axl Rose was arrested for allegedley biting a security guard after the guard tried to stop a tirade between a drunk Rose and his close assistant, Beta. Rose was released from a Swedish jail at approximately 7:00 p.m. on June 27 after paying 50,000 Swedish kronor (approximately $6,800) in fines.

Axl Rose is seen here with guitarist Robin Finck

Merck Mercuriadis released this statement following the band's sold out show in Oslo, Norway:

"We are very unhappy about Tuesday's events in Stockholm. To put this in context, we are in the middle of a tour - with sold out shows last night in Oslo, tomorrow in Copenhagen, and Saturday in Zurich rounding out this week alone - and continuing until the beginning of August. The Swedish authorities were very aware of this, yet continually threatened us over a 12 hour period with between 5 days and 3 weeks incarceration without bail if Axl did not "cooperate."

After the Sweden scenario Rose joked casually in reference to the incident in following dates. A few incidents have followed since but none have been as sudden and as abrupt as the incident in Sweden.

Yes, there have been some moments in concerts since then were a rowdy crowd has initiated into throwing objects at the band, which seemed to have almost pulled the plug in some shows (Newcastle, UK in particular) Although, isn't this normal and natural in the Guns N' Roses world? Most hardcore GN'R fans would probably say yes to that.

Ron Thal is seen here at the Roskilde Festival picking up a ball from the crowd

This summer, with an audience of about 3/4 of a million, the group has proved to be a tremendous force in today's Pop dominated music world. Maybe, just maybe, there's a little hope for those hoping for a resurgence of the essence of hard rock. Guns N' Roses could possibly be that reviving essence.

The band has played 6 songs off their Chinese Democracy LP during this European tour. There Was A Time (T.W.A.T.), Better, I.R.S., Madagascar, Chinese Democracy, and The Blues have all provided enough evidence to show that the wait for the new record was probably well worth the while. These songs performed through out various dates this summer have proven that Guns N' Roses is still able to rock hard but with a touch of modern poison. These new efforts show a band willing to experiment with an antithetic sense of musical and genre-based aspects while ignoring critics who think that this band is not capable of doing so. Many think this road is a dead-end for this band who was once at the top of their game.

Although, many others do think that these minds have got it wrong, and that Guns N' Roses will once again pillage the now barren land of Rock. Rose announced earlier in the year that the forthcoming Guns N' Roses album is scheduled to be released later in the fall of this year. Will this actually turn out to be? Only time will tell. The tale of a silenced album made during years of internal inquisitions may come to an end erratically soon this year.

Or...Is this just the beginning?

Brilliant review, brillaint tour, congratulations to Axl, congrats to the band, and a well earned pat on the back for all us guys who have had faith and stuck with the band through all the years of silence. Heres hoping the rest of the year brings a release of CD to finish the job.

Thanks for the great review, good job! :)

It got me thinking, maybe we could do something similar to what they did in 2001 with the newspaper ad. If we could somehow show our appreciation for the European tour they're about to finish, by a "thank you GN'R, come back anytime" type of ad..

Title: Tour Retrospective Thread - a look back at 3 months (highs and lows)
Post by: mlewis on July 30, 2006, 07:42:07 PM
So tonight the European tour came to an end.

I've followed the new band for about 6 years now, through cancelled tours in Europe, bad press and lots of shit, so tonight marks the end of a triumphant chapter for Guns n' Roses. The most successful tour for 13 years, a band coming together on tour, and the promise of lots more still to come.

So I'd like to start this thread- for us to share great memories, but also for more general discussion of the tour. What have we learnt? What's changed?

We've got to know this band a lot more, I feel. The guys are not just characters I watch on an old Rio DVD, but living, breathing embodiments of Rock n' Roll. They've embraced the fans and we've taken them so much more to heart too, and got to know a little of them as personalities, just as we did the old guys. They seem so much more real, now. A band I can imagine sitting round, and writing and recording an album together, in a way I couldn't before. How do the rest of you feel.

I'll give it a 9/10 rating.

New songs, drama onstage and off, setlists that varied each night, good performances by all band members.

Probalby 9\10, here too.

the band is clearly a cohesive unit, much more so than 2001-2002, the players are tighter too

axl seems more comfortable performing and looks a million times better

we got to hear new material live

axl is still axl when it comes to the party scene, and it could cost him, though he made it to every gig, only ending 2 early, one (newcastle) due to fan misbehavior and tonight due to ill health.

all in all, a success, with hopefully better things to come.

Post by: agropolus on July 30, 2006, 07:54:50 PM
yeah, near perfect IMO, but if there wasn't any incidents then it wouldn't be GN'R :D

But I think things are going quite well, if this thing doesn't take off and album doesn't come out this year, then Axl better quit and go home

Post by: busngabb on July 30, 2006, 07:59:54 PM
Fantastic from start until two songs from the finish.

The tour has, tonight excepted, been far better than I thought possible. No cancelled gigs, no band members quitting and no particularly bad incidents. I think the band is far, far better than in 02 and there is a real chemistry there now, which was lacking in 02. Brilliant stage presence, brilliant musically and the crowds responded to it.

Download I feel will go down as a classic GNR moment, for their ability to thoroughly win over a brutal metal crowd and the reviews were improving with each gig. My own personal experience of the band at Donnington and Manchester was amazing, truly two of the greatest nights of my life.

It is a shame that instead of capping the tour with a glorious ending, the band rather limped across the finishing line. I just hope the ridicule that follows in the press doesn't tarnish the improving image the band was developing.

The only worry is the lack of any information relating to the album or any material from it (Singles, videos etc). Most people who claim to be in the know spoke of announcements being made during the tour. If we don't get one before September in LA, then its safe to assume the US tour will feature a similar setlist as this tour, and that CD really isn't as close as we hope it might be. Fingers crossed for the next 6 weeks or so.

8.5/10

Yeah Great Tour, it was fantastic to have GNR fans around the world post pics and updates Immediately, GNR is like the Millinium "deadheads" only Futuristic style, they have cell phones and megauploads and share with all the other fans at home, This was amazing and great and Axl sang and performed better then he did with his original gang. Thanks to Axl GNR and the GNR fans for the 2006 Summer Tour.

6/10 - an accomplishment that is was finished and all shows were completed. Some good performances by the sound of it and Axl was out and about alot, generating publicity. Other positives is the fact that he looks nowhere near as weird as he di in 02. I know it is the music that matters, but it is true and good to see him looking more like the rockstar he undoubtedly is

The constant lateness is inexcusable. I know some of yoiu hark back to dangerous/riot causing Axl of the late 80's early 90s as some kind of justification. The fact of the metter is that the British media for the most part, focused solely on this and not the music. Q magazine ( the biggest music mag in Europe) summed it up in their last issue by inferring that you would think Axl would need to win people over for his impending album release - instead, he is alienating and subjecting himself to un-needed ridicule. I know the average diehard on this board is not concerned with this, but it is not the diehard that Axl is going to have to win over for this album to be a success, its the average music buying punter.

The solos and drawn out jam sessions also must go. A tight, consise set is what is required. For the life of me, I cant understand how Axl could not see this especially having pulled this on UYI tour. If he needs a rest, get Tommy to sing a number. Guitar wankery and meandering, tedious jams are just the worst thing possible at a rock concert.

Please, address these things before the next leg.

I have been reading this forumn , and I am alittle ashamed , first of all , how many of you were original fans in the mid eighties , i know i was one , and to see not a single original member on stage tonight to finish the show is absoloutly depressing at best.nor was there any announcement of cd coming out .

I am not trying to bash any oneperson here don't get me wrong ,but each one ofyou got douped on this tour . axl was late 35 out of 3o something shows, not to mention the nastalgia sounding set lists , the over played solos , so axl could hit up the 02

so what if he had high blood pressure , he could have finished and stayed on stage while baz finished

dont fool your selves , The axl rose touring band is just a circus act, prove me wrong other wise

I'm not going to count tonight's unfortunate happenings, the tour was an overwhelming success. No riots, no cancellations, etc. And Axl even remained calm and turned some bad situations into great shows (Download, Rio). The band has definitely benefited from all of these shows, obviously becoming better players and being a much more cohesive group of guys. The chemistry between these guys is off the chart. I'm just glad that they've finally been able to prove to the world that they can complete a tour without starting any riots or cancelling any shows, playing their asses off all the while. On to the US...

GnR (or rather, Axl) limped over the finishing line - but they still crossed it.

After the years of crap, its good to have seen a tour that was, to be fair, pretty damn good.  The lateness cannot be excused, but even when late, the shows are still kick ass.

Agreed that the soloing is a bit much.  GnR have enough songs in their back catalogue to fill out a set without needing to resort to the soloing and jamming.

That said, I'd rather have a late, soloing, jamming GnR than web rumours and suggestions that Axl has been seen at this or that nightclub.  They are making their living as a band now, and lng may that continue,

PS, Axl get well soon.

the only thing that would have made this more interesting for me is more new material.   Axl and all the guys in the band were amazing.   Release the album and play a few more new tunes, easily a 10/10.

Axl's voice was back in good form. Robins playing and image were better. Axl couldn't find a guitar player that was as good as Bucket, so he hired a guy who plays a foot guitar, and who answers fan e-mails. The band played a lot of boring instrumentals while Axl rested his voice. They added a few new songs to the setlist. No update or release date were given for the album. If this tour was designed to get Axl's voice back in game shape for the US Chinese Democracy tour, then it was very successful.

Title: Tour wrapup: Highs & Lows (Glass half-full)
Post by: Z on July 31, 2006, 12:18:16 AM
Great tour.? More highs then lows.? Nobody in the GNR crew would have wanted to script the ending this way, but they can hold their heads high.

I see it as a case of Axl wanting to do too much for the fans.? I'm not suprised he burnt himself out with the longest concert of the tour and then finishing the night with a 1.5 hour acoustic set.? He probably stayed up another few hours hanging out before crashing.

Very professional of the band to finish strong with Baz on vocals.

The tour is what this band needed to progress further.? I'll bet the album will get a November release date by September.?

Highs:
There were no cancellations.?
Axl's voice was incredible.?
Great guest appearances (Izzy & Baz).
Robin proved he can handle the responsibility of being the lead guitarist in GNR.
Richard and Tommy form a solid centerpiece, the heart of the band if you will.
Ron proved to be a worthy addition to the band.
Dizzy upped his game and can now be considered one of the top piano players in rock.
Brain/Frank more than lived up to expectations.
Chris, what the fuck does he do??? Kidding!!!!!? He does more than fans will ever know.?

We may all look back in a year from now and reflect upon this tour seeing it as the jump start they needed to inject Guns N' Roses into the 21st century.

And the lows?!?!?..........
Fuck it I'll let somebody else name them.? I don't care to look back at this tour with any negativety.

Thank you Guns N' Roses!!!!!!!!!!

BRING ON SOME CHINESE DEMOCRACY.? Fuck 13 tracks.............give us like 15 at least? ?? ?

ONE LAST THING:
Axl proved that he does indeed care about his fans.

I agree. The glass is definitely half full hear.  They did 39 shows including the NYC shows.  Thats awesome, the sour memories of 2002 are gone, bring it back to the US drop CD and get it going.

Title: Re: Tour wrapup: Highs & Lows (Glass half-full)
Post by: Mr.Intensity on July 31, 2006, 12:59:49 AM
The tour was an overwhelming success, Axl Rose has regained any credibility he may have lost from the 2002 tour cancellation in regards to being a risk for promoters. He also has proved that his voice is back on key and just as good as ever. Who cares that he got sick and couldn't finish a couple songs at the end here. 39 shows in total, with no cancellations, I'll take that anyday!!!

Let the train roll on to the U.S......... it's still picking up steam in my opinion.

The low of this tour was Ron Thal and the high of this tour was Axl's voice. Axl still starts shows extremely late, and he still has a short fuse. The late start times are going to get him in trouble in the US and Canada. I'm pulling for Axl, but he could easily fuck this whole thing up by causing a riot. I can just see him starting a show late, and then have some technical problems, causing him to walk off stage, and thus triggering a riot. Axl may smile a bit more and rant a little less, but he still has the same short fuse that could cause him to self destruct at any time. That's always been the appeal of GnR, that it could explode at any time. Hopefully Axl keeps the pin in the grenade until Chinese Democracy comes out.

I'll never understand the hate for Bumble/Ron - the guy is a great guitar player and fits in with this band more than Buckethead ever would/could.

all you do in your posts is whine about ron and saying you want bucket back. you should put that in your signature, ohh... but then you would not have anything to post :nervous: and i bet the number of shows you've attended live on this tour is zero : ok:

the show has been amazing. it's great that they pulled it off. i can't believe how far away it seemed in february and now it's a wrap. they did not cancel any shows. the ones with the rolling stones got replaced immediatly with new ones. we got to hear new songs at the shows. i think it's been great.

Great tour and so much more than ive expected...

GNR did all the shows and that is most important thing in my opinion. Now people cant say that they probably cancel and stuff like that...

Axl proves he is back with a fantastic voice and the band feel like they are (almost) a real band. The only thing they need are to release the album... : ok:

how many of you were original fans in the mid eighties , i know i was one , and to see not a single original member on stage tonight to finish the show is absoloutly depressing at best.

i'm sure izzy was an original member  ;)

Again, they could  have just not finished nightrain or played paradise city. It was a nice thing for Baz to do, to make a gesture to the fans. If Axl had wanted to leave, the whole band would have left too and you know it. He wasn't feeling right, whether it  was a serious condition or the result of too much partying I can't say. But they made sure a guns show ended with paradise city, and  given the circumstances it was a cool thing to do.

Hmm.

How many late arrivals? How many shows cut short? How many tantrums and storm offs? And of course, last song of the tour, Axl wasn't there. Maybe he shouldn't have played a tiny club show to 100 people at 3am and respected the fact he had a gig later on in front of 12,000 people. Oh well. Overall, a success, but no, no CD, same old setlists, same old tantrums, walkouts, booing and late arrivals.

When they do turn up on stage - they're brilliant. But when is another matter.

I would give the tour a 9/10.

It gave me a chance to hear some of my fav tunes, see Axl (one of my fav frontmans), complete seeing the 'classic' GN'R line-up, and also the new fantastic tunes. Cheers!
I think there is so much potential in the band, a lot of ppl were surprised that the new guys can actually play, and the future looks bright. Maybe 2007 will be GN'Rs year (if 2006 wasnt!)

Only disappointing notes were:

Too many solos, no Rocket Queen/TWAT/IRS at either of my shows (me being petty really)

But so many great points:

Intro/WTTJ - Amazing, utterly
Better/Blues/Maddy - Great to hear live
Nightrain- As someone said earlier, a show-stealer, closely followed by WTTJ, YCBM, SCOM
Seeing Izzy, great!

Lows:

The solos

Oh gawd they were awful

Christina Aguilera tracks?

Dont cry in instrumental form?

Whatever Bumblefoot was doing....

Dizzy's endless piano solo

I just want GNR songs - is that really so much to ask at a GNR show? Is that being unreasonable?

Slash did an awesome godfather solo, Buckethead did a nice Star Wars solo - why cant the new band do somethining like that?

Mindless shred solo's - dont we love GNR and Slash because they weren't that kind of 80's metal?

With all due respect boss, it isnt the 80's anymore, GNR have moved on and Slash is no longer in GNR. Times have changed, yes im not a massive fan of the solo's! Rons being the only exception because of the rolling around!

The solos were too many and too long. For people not soaked in sweat and trying to catch their breath, it became boring and lost momemntum. For REAL rock fans, sweating it up, screaming and having fun infront of the stage, they were a nice welcome ?: ok:

Axl's voice was amazing..

Some songs really missed Buckethead..like Knockin', YCBM....others didnt.

Finck proved himself!

Brain having a baby!!

If we have a thread on what Axl was wearing 4 days ago, Mattack will still bash Bumblefoot out of nothing.

What - so its fine if Axl "explodes" after releasing CD - just so you get your new album fix???? maybe you didnt mean it to come across that way - but it sure as hell sounded it.  I think axl has matured a lot from the tours of yester year.  Shows did start late, there were TD's, Axl did walk off stage (Donington) - but he came back on and completed a fkn great show that night.  credit where credit is due, man - huge credit to axl, adn the whole band as a group.  Personally speaking, Ron was an absolute highlight for me - he nailed every note last night and seems like a very likeable guy.

Along with one other major occurance, it has contributed to the best summer of my life.

Thankyou GN'R and Baz. Thankyou Dryer.

this tour was a major success.
Congratulations to the boys
They now appear like a real band  : ok:
i think this tour did a lot to them concernig the "band effect".
It is so good to see them having fun and to see Axl in good spirits and excellent form is nothing but great.
Bumblefoot is cool as hell  and a worthy replacement for the masked man too
Finck,Stinson, Fortus= WOW!!!!!!!!!
Dizzy and Pittman are also doing a good job. Especially Pittman seems to have his hands in the zone more than we think ( No irony!!)

to sum it up : If they now release Chinese Democracy right after the first single that it might be world domination part II

I can't wait 8)

The good:
- Axl was awesome. Honnestly, He impressed me. He voice is powerfull. Best frontman I have ever seen onstage.
- Richard Fortus: He is the next guitar hero. Absolutely the best of the 3 guys on guitar. By far. A Worldwide Class guitar player. just WOW.
- Izzy: awesome to see him back!
- Robin: better than in 2002. He has improved. better player and now he is awesome to look at during a show. I love his new style, great stage presence.
- The covers: some really great ones like "You gotta move". awesome.
- The cohesion: they like to play with each other. Some good connexions. And they look like a Rock band now. Absolutely better than 2002.
- The sound of the band: great sound. Full. Powerfull.
- The pyro/visual effects: It's wonderfull for the eyes.

The neutral (neither good nor bad):
- Ron Thal (Bumblefoot): I like the guy, but I still think a 3rd guitar player is not necessary. Good player, but not needed. 2 are enough. Richard could do the job and play more Lead. 3 is a mess. Too many people on guitars. You don't know who play what.
- The setlist: good to hear the good old classics. But kinda the same order at every show. I miss some illusion stuff too (Civil war, don't cry full, 14 years with izzy!!). But i'm satisfied with what we got though.

The bad:
- The late
- the solos/jams/interludes: too many. too much. too long. Few are great, too many are really boring and annoying.
- the light: there is not enough light onstage.

I hope you people back in the states enjoy the shows in September! What a summer!! Great to see the best band in the world 4 times to add to my tally of Guns gigs and also brilliant to meet so many cool guns fans! Mike

Axl, perfect look, attitude, sense of humour, great voice (my god i want a soundboard of knockin'on heaven's door at budapest !), great alchemy between Robin & Richard, it was very different with buckerhead to say the least...
Izzy on stage, another original gunner, and the most important to have back, in my opinion.
Robin Finck, the new guitar hero of the 2000s.
Dizzy's covers, the Aguilera solo, the don't cry one, the little funny jams (doors, james brown...)
and of course Brain drums and Chris keyboards and effects stuff.

you were great in europe guys, i'm pretty sure u'll be even better in the US.

thx for the Paris show, it was amazing.

I've seen the band twice now, and I want to have Chinese Democracy on my iPod before I go see them again. If you saw Bucket in 2002, then Ron Thal would be a lowlight for you. Axl's late start times will prove to be trouble for the band over here, I guarantee it. Yes I want an album before the whole ship is derailed, due to a late start time and Axl walking off stage, thus triggering a riot.
