Title: The NSA trying to find terrorists
Post by: Where is Hassan Nasrallah ? on July 24, 2006, 01:26:22 PM
http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig7/rudmin1.html

No matter how sophisticated and super-duper are NSA's methods for identifying terrorists, no matter how big and fast are NSA's computers, NSA's accuracy rate will never be 100% and their misidentification rate will never be 0%. That fact, plus the extremely low base-rate for terrorists, means it is logically impossible for mass surveillance to be an effective way to find terrorists.

I will not put Bayes' computational formula here. It is available in all elementary statistics books and is on the web should any readers be interested. But I will compute some conditional probabilities that people are terrorists given that NSA's system of mass surveillance identifies them to be terrorists.

Sitting on our hands is the answer. Peace thru lack of action.

Nothing is 100%.

Nothing is 100%.

some things are 0.000001 %.
but yeah, paradoxal
doing a lot of things that does nothing.
or doing nothing that does nothing.

You two have been warned once already.

I really don't like these threads because they always end in useless cyberfights. I know these are important/ interesting issues but people just can't control themselves on the internet and always have to insult the next guy or his country.

It's probably not a good idea to spy on terrorists.  What a terrible thing.  To compare the NSA to the KGB is an utter joke; however, it is not surprising considering people put Bush/hitler, Hezbollah/Israel on a moral equivalency.

I believe that some of the 911 terrorists were identified using sophisticated computer databases before 911.  Look up "Able Danger."

Bush/NSA violated the telecommunications Act by spying on Americans 7 months PRIOR to 9-11. So your assertion goes out the window.

Thanks.

Well that is all relative and not an issue of importance. It is merely posturing for a personal attack, or straw men to be built up.

Where Bush using 9-11 as an excuse (yet another lie) for eavesdropping on the American public is important. Even more so that he was doing it over a half a year before that tragic day that he has exploited ever since.

I think its about time you call your Jihad! You are constantly bashing the president.. Its like you are obsessed.. If you are so disatisfied why don't you start a revolution.. I mean you actually go as far as accusing him of conspiring the september 11th attacks..   :peace:  Hell I'm pretty sure you have a problem with his HIV efforts in Africa too.. Its as if you are so obsessed with bashing every move he makes..

Where exactly is your evidence of this?  I certainly doubt you are an attorney or have ever read the telecommunications act.  You probably read some article by some left-wing professor/pundit and then regurgitate it back to this board without any real understanding of the legal or constitutional issues.

FYI, presidential powers in regards to spying and eavesdropping is a highly disputed matter.  Just like any law, some interpret it one way, and others interpret it another way.  Yet, conveniently, you immediately believe the anti-bush, anti-spy-against-terrorists position.

It is all relative to what?? How is this an attack?? It is certainly relevant because I constantly see ridiculous comparisons made by those on the left.? Are you seriously trying to say that the NSA is similar to the KGB?? Is this for real?

Quote

Are you serious?? You really think Bush is using 911 as an excuse to eavesdrop on americans?? For what?? What purpose does the government have to spy on the average American.? You can argue whether it is legal and whether we should do it, but to assert that he is not really going after terrorists but simply using 911 as an excuse to eavesdrop on the average american is just ludicrous.

By the way SLC, your signature speaks volumes.  Instead of focusing on the "real" enemies to this country, the left sincerely believes that those on the right are the real danger.  To equate a columnist with Abu Masab Al Zarqawi is just astounding.

Because I am not a lawyer leaves me unable to tell you something that you are unaware of? Jeeeesh.

I think you answered your own question.

Are you serious?  You really think Bush is using 911 as an excuse to eavesdrop on americans?

Bush himself has said that dipping into phone calls was what he needed to do after 9-11. He used 9-11 as an excuse for many things. All of which came from his own mouth.

By the way SLC, your signature speaks volumes.  Instead of focusing on the "real" enemies to this country, the left sincerely believes that those on the right are the real danger.  To equate a columnist with Abu Masab Al Zarqawi is just astounding.

It's called sarcasm, kind of like the KGB question you had above (which was obvious.)

The quote is from David Letterman BTW.............

There is a split now in the right wing. Members of his own party want to sue him for his unconstitutional acts among other things. True conservatives are starting to distance themselves from him, speaking out against him. Hell, even Pat Buchanan is saying things that have blown me away (against Bush's non stop blunders.) I never thought I'd agree with Pat Buchanan in a million years, but there he was basically repeating what I have said all along.

If you want to see who is "bashing" the president, you can look no further than the republican party.

The story was actually broken by Bloomberg LP, which was founded (and still owned) by a republican.

It was then picked up by most major news networks and reported.

LOL, did I say they were?

I think it is a mistake for any party not to be divided. To walk lockstep without thinking for oneself is recipe for disaster. Just agreeing with the party line no matter what got us where we are now. It is also why you are seeing republicans break away from Bush before these November elections (although it is too late for many of them.)
