Title: If you could have picked the track listing for The Spaghetti Incident.....
Post by: Led Roses 06 on July 17, 2006, 07:02:36 PM
What songs, not necessarily punk either, would you have picked for GNR to cover on this cd.

In no particular order:
Eruption
You Really Got Me
Hair of the Dog (they got that one)
Whole Lotta Rosie (studio version would be nice)
Train Kept A Rollin (studio version would be nice)
Strairway to Heaven
Smoke on the Water
Hey Joe
Only Women Bleed (studio)
Over the Hills and Far Away
Stranglehold
We Will Rock You (loved it at the Freddy tribute)
We Are the Champions
Free Fallin' (love to hear just Axl on this one)

I know a lot of the songs I picked have been done live or parts have been done live, but i think this would have been killer.

Well, since the whole point was old school punk covers Id say the trackset was pretty solid. Id only add some Dead Kennedys.

Thats 1 thing i've always wondered... Why is SIDHY on there, if its punk covers?? Sales??

Each band member picked some tracks which were then agreed upon by general consensus. Axl's music taste is kind of going in many directions, so it should be no surprise that SIDHY was Axl's choice. He also picked HOTD and the Manson thing. Slash chose I don't care about you, Duff chose the Johnny Thunders cover and Attitude, for example. Don't know if Gilby had much say though ;)

Going back to "Whole Lotta Rosie", where the hell was that recorded.  I've heard it a few times, and the one I had said it was recoreded at Ritz 88.  I know that's not right though.

I would like all the current tracks on TSI along with these other songs GN'R have played over the years:

Heartbreak Hotel
Jumping Jack Flash
Wild Horses
Whole Lotta Rosie
Train Kept A Rollin
Sail Away Sweet Sister
Tie Your Mother Down
Only Women Bleed

I think Whole Lotta Rosie was on Live From The Jungle.

What songs, not necessarily punk either, would you have picked for GNR to cover on this cd.

They did a perfect job selecting the songs and covering them. It helped introduce me to bands that I wasn't previously familiar with at that age. They were also the kind of songs you don't hear on the radio everyday, which was part of its charm.

I wouldn't change anything about it, except for the hidden track. It would've been a nice surprise to hear, "Take A Letter, Maria".

a studio version of jumpin' jack flash would be awesome.

I would kill to hear GnR covering the following songs though:

The Weight (The Band)
18 and Life (Skid Row)
Rocketman (Elton John)
Midnight Rider (Allman Brothers Band)
My Back Pages (Bob Dylan)
American Girl (Tom Petty)
The Cats in the Cradle (Harry Chapin)
Magic Bus (The Who)
Living Loving Maid (Led Zeppelin)
Superstition (Stevie Wonder)
Cemetary Gates (Pantera)

If they made an album out of that itd be one hell of an interesting mess.

Some songs shouldn't have been on TSI : Buick Makane (Big Dumb Sex ???), Hair Of The Dog (wtf?), Black Leather (there are way better Sex Pistols songs).
They should have done a David Bowie's cover, "Quicksand" for example.

Anyway, the Spaghetti Incident wasn't a great idea imo. And the production was terrible (too clean).

There's an encrypted message at the bottom of the cover, something like "Excuse Slash..."
What does it mean ?

Where does it say that?

Where does it say that?

At the bottom of the Spaghetti Incident cover : "S Q Z/EYJ"

???  It took a bit of creativity on your part to figure that out, but I don't think that's what that means.

Does it?  :nervous:

I think the production is fantastic on TSI, guitars sound huge, drums sound huge, bass is there thumping away, vocals are in your face. Sounds great to me.

That encrypted message is definitely a private joke... About the spaghetti incident... "Excuse Slash, he..."

See, everything is based on the person. Exactly these songs, together with You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory are favorite ones in the album. It would be awsome to hear Tie Your Mother Down, We Will Rock You, Dead Flowers and Enter Sandman for example. Just songs that they played somewhere...

personally, i love the IDEA of GNR doing a punk covers record, and i think it could have been amazing. this is the tracklisting (in no particular order) i would love to have seen:

ain't it fun
buick makane
you can't put your arms around a memory (with axl singing preferably. i know johnny thunders' voice wasn't great, but c'mon now...)
kids of the black hole (adolescents)
london calling (the clash)
looking at you (mc5)
search & destroy (iggy & the stooges)
richie dagger's crime (germs)
transmission (joy division)
what do i get (buzzcocks)
die, die my darling (the misfits)
bastards of young (the replacements)
los angeles (x... maybe duet with exene cervenka?)

About the songs being the lesser known ones - I think thats the exact thing that makes a good cover. Everyone knows and loves the classics - theyve had their glory, but why touch something so solid already?

They should have played something from The Ramones, The Velvet Underground and Led Zeppelin.

And what's the meaning of the encrypted message at the bottom of the cover ? Nobody answered me yet.

Yeah dude, you're right. That's why I haven't put Since I Don't Have You. Anyway, I really like Duff during You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory. And Black Leather is far away from classic...and I still think it rocks.

Dead Kennedys were too politicized for GNR and the fans...

Which is exactly why it is shit for a punk covers album. It was like slicked-up 80's drums and led zeppelin guitar tones and at the same time trying to a convincing Misfits cover. Sorry, try again guys. Every single one of those covers was shit. The sentiment was nice but what a horrible way to produce a punk album. PS: Matt Sorum is about the worst punk rock drummer on the planet.

PPS: thinsafteypin is the only one who has come up with a good tracklist. 18 and Life? Cemetary Gates? C'mon people. Let's throw some STP and maybe come Candlebox in there while we're at it.  :hihi:

They never should have released it to begin with.

I've never been a big fan of GN'R's "interim" albums...

Yeah, but you're missing the point that it's GN'R's versions of those songs, and GN'R are a slicked up 80's rock band with Led Zep guitar tones. If they were gonna keep it sounding exactly like the originals, what's the point?

Spaghetti Incident sounded like UYI... If it had sounded like AFD, it would have been great.
