This will be there 28th show of the current tour, thats including the 5 NYC shows.  I was thinking about when they might break out some more new stuff or give an update on CD.  However, I wouldn't be surprised if they want to the KRQK concert to do that, considering they'll be in CA.  Im just really glad they're showing up everynight and putting on great performances !

I don't think AXL misunderstand what the crowd wanted in Greece.
My guess is that he purposely misuderstand it to CPR coz he don't want to play it live.
And I hope he play Civil War tonight.

Axl just wanted to avoid the request for Civil War in Athens, that's what he made the CPR joke. It was just a joke, he made out the chant alright. It's not a big deal....

I don't think they are playing Civil War on this tour, the setlist is not very flexible.? :-\

Post by: eddiesson on July 12, 2006, 08:45:01 PM
well, I just came home from one of the best and probably biggest concert (festivals don't count) I have ever attended. I'm still in awe. The band which introduced me to rock music (with totally new line-up) played an awesome gig.

As I knew they would start playing approx. 2 hours later than announced, I arrived at the arena 1 hour late  ;) Axl can be proud of me :) They didn't prove me wrong, they appeared on stage at 22:45, instead of 21:00.

Here's the songs played:

Welcome To The Jungle
It's So Easy
Mr. Brownstone
Live And Let Die
Knocking On Heavens Door
Short Robin Finck solo
Sweet Child O'Mine
Richard solo (Robin joined later for "Beautiful")
Dizzy Solo
The Blues
Ron Thal solo (Don't Cry)
You Could Be Mine
November Rain
Out Ta Get Me
Better
Think About You*
Patience*
Nightrain*

-Encore-

Madagascar
Robin Finck solo
Paradise City*

As you might guess, godlike Izzy Stradlin joined GNR on stage during songs marked with *. I'll be telling why I called him godlike.

They exploded with WttJ, and It's so Easy. Everybody singing along every single word, jumping, screaming... Then things slowed down with Mr. Brownstone and Live And Let Die. there was a moment in the middle of LaLD, where Robin finck played a little solo, which he played with EXACT same guitar tone Slash used... I felt really strange. As if... anyway.

Axl noticed a banner. He requested and showed it us: "Mum, don't worry, I'm with axl again - '93/'06" which was referring to the famous banner "Don't worry Mum, I'm with axl" banner of the '93 istanbul concert :)

then came a very extended version of KoHD, which was a bit boring towards the end. it was more like 2002 version than UYI2 one.

Robin Finck played a solo with a raspy tone, then came SCoM. the solo wasn't the best effort from Robin. He played it better at some occasion. this was certainly not the brightest moment of concert, but Axl's perfect performance made everything outstanding.

Richard showed his technical talent and rock'n'roll blues roots. I couldn't believe the stuff he played with his thumb instead of the pick! I can't understand why he's getting very few solos.

The Blues received almost no reaction from the crowd, very few people were into new songs. It's probably because most of the people were older than 25. They were more interested to hear classic stuff. And the blues followed a very long(but beautiful) dizzy reed solo, and The Blues wasn't the song which would move people. Nevertheless, It was played beautifully. Robin's solo shined. He's very good with solos with less notes, without fast passages. melodic, emotional and expressive stuff.

During his guitar solo, Ron suffered a lot of strange noises and cuts due to equipment, but he demonstrated how a guitar solo should be. not focused on boring technical prowess, but emotional stuff, standing alone without a band to back up, entertaining.

Yo Could Be Mine started with drum intro, and imho, better than Brain's effort. But still, Matt Sorum, with his double drums (I think they're toned differently) makes this one unique. How much they try, they can't make it the same (let alone better). And tommy's bass sound was exactly the same as Duff's. sigh... I know people don't like this comment but... I really wanted to see that blond haired tall guy playing that stuffi which he does in his own way.

November Rain was one of the highlights of the night. all three guitarists played their solo perfectly. they brought their own interpretations to what slas created. These already superb solos were even improved by those guys. (again finck played with Slash signature sound...) And the slow part ended.

Out Ta Get me was strong, but it didn't move people a lot. wih better things started to get wild but we were out of energy already...

BUT...

then came the shining star, Izzy Stradlin. It was really unannounced. I checked his website for an announcement many times, but nothing was there. People went NUTS! I can't describe the energy he brought to stage and to the audience! It was like WttJ again, as it was the first song of the concert. people screaming, singing along... everything. And on stage, he was like the leader. tommy, ron and richard were always around him, pushing him to do the back vocals, as if he was their father, yet better, their idol. He wore exactly the same black outfit and played almost exact same black guitar Richard was playing. it was almost like a father and son. So alike... Izzy really owned the show. He was godlike. you could feel an aura of energy around him.

Patience and Nightrain were awesome. No words can describe.

Madagascar is my favourite among new songs, and most original newGNR song. they played it very good. the reaction it received was the best among new songs. Then the gig ended with Paradise City as usual.

After a looooooong review, here's my thoughts:

- the guitar trio is awesome, awesome, awesome. Their passion is so clear.
- Their stage presence is unmatched. people who never heard GNR (yes, they exist!) are impressed by their show.
- Fast and powerful old stuff (Ycbm, out Ta get me) aren't as good as slower or new stuff. The reason is that, 3 guitars (and occasionally 4 with izzy) make it really hard to hear subtle fills, basslines, solos and stuff. it becomes somewhat "rigid" and too solid.
- their forte is slower stuff, Ron and Richard play really superb stuff in the background.
- tommy sticks too much to the original stuff Duff wrote. I was really eager to hear the difference he makes, but instead, I missed Duff occasionally. the fact that they didn't play Rocket Queen worked almost better for me, as the bassline is so "Duff".
- Axl is better than ever. Better than past, better than beginning of the tour. incredible.
- Ron may be one of the humblest and most sympathetic guitar virtuoso ever lived.
- Dizzy is a damn good piano player, but his stuff goes unheard beacuse of the sound barrage guitars create.
- Izzy is either the new prohpet, or a saint.

- Don't flame me on this, I LOVE new guysand new songs, but we must give credit to the classic line-up, Especially to Slash and Duff, they created music which is so wonderful. Anything new guys play with their sound, or make slight variations, you can't help but think what a genius and damn good players they are, what a badass attitude but strong emotion they had. (and I must add, you can easily add Buckethead to the list. his impact on newGNR is undeniable) after all, they are still adding blocks to the foundations "old guys" created.

- New songs are the ones which are totally not shadowed by the past. They really should play more of the new songs. And Robin really shows his talent on them. I think those solos are the same caliber of Slash's solos.

One word to describe (everthing related to GNR, both past and present): "MAGICAL"

But don't forget that Izzy and Richard Fortus are almost the same age... A son/father relationship is unlikely.

Thank you for such a heartfelt review.  :)

Looking at the original members today I find it interesting how different Izzy appears to Axl, Slash and Duff. The other three may have aged, but still look every inch the rock stars they were 15-20 years ago.

Poor Steven fell by the wayside but Izzy now looks like he could blend into the crowd, coming across somewhere between a bus driver and a geography teacher. Perhaps going clean changes your image as well as your mental outlook. Whenever he gets on stage it makes no difference either way.  : ok:

thanks very much. I really enjoyed how you enjoyed my review (as much as I did while writing it) ! I hope I can make you make imagine how a wonderful concert we watched last night.

and there are a few details I forgot to mention:

the capacity of the concert arena was 17000. I'm not sure if it was full, as I was very close to the front. But I can guarantee you, %75-80 of it was full, at least.
Concertplace was BY THE SEA! so the air was always fresh, the scene was beautiful, lights coming from the coast, boats, evrything. Axl couldn't resist giving a good comment about it during "knocking on Heavens Door" which was too meaningful. I hope someday, you should all visit Istanbul, and contemplate the beauty of Bosphorus.

and Slashead: Izzy and Richard might be of the same age, but with Richard (who has the EXACT same hairstyle and very similar outfit with Izzy '85) looking like Izzy's 20's, and Izzy looking and acting soooo maturated (a la Bruce Springsteen or Bob Dylan) from a distance, you can easily take them lke father-son. They can change clothes/behaviours, you can take Richard as father, Izzy as son. what I mean is that, it's not the age, but the attitude and visual appearence makes me feel this way. The obvious similarity between them makes this feeling even stronger.

I hope he gives the same suport to Velvet Revolver too.

Izzy really owned the show. He was godlike. you could feel an aura of energy around him.

what would you describe as the color of this aura?

was it orange?

goin' to to the concert i was passin' in front of the hotel they stayed (i was given this info) i saw a man wearing something like hood like arabs on his head , his face couldn't be seen from my side but i saw a huge beard that reminded me of robin. i told the driver to slow down and then i saw tommy and richard gettin out from a minivan. i jumped from the taxi and ran towards them, as they saw me they were a little bit scared bcuz a crazy lookin 130 kilos man screaming was running to them. robin escaped to the hotel, but richard and tommy saw my "axl for president" t-shirt and started laughing, i came near them and said that i'm a huge fan of them and thanked them for comin' and wished them luck. i was frozen and couldn't speak they waited for me to speak or have a photo (cuz my cellphone was in my hands) but i couldnt do anything. then tommy asked me if i want to ask them something or talk or maybe have a photo with them but i was bummed, richard shook my hand and told me they are in a hurry and was pleased to meet me and tommy said something i don't remember, then i suddenly asked if they knew where axl was , and they both smiled and said "who knows".
We waved our hands to each other and then a bald man came to me and shook my hand and said see ya there, and a fareast dude with a camera (i then saw hin on stage, he's the gnr photographer) and asked me where i got my tshirt, and both bald guy and fareast dude told me axl would really love it,and fareast dude took a photo of me and told me that i will see this photo.

i then hurried to the taxi and headed my way to the concert arena.
my wife and friends kept a place for me in the third row and we began to wait.
first a band called 4lyn came to stage, they still couldnt believe they opened for gnr and they chanted gnr with us all the time. they were allright but not my taste. kinda nu-metal band but with nu turntable and shynth shit. people reacted them good except some fuck numetal shouters.
then we waited like two hours i think and came the opening of welcome to the jungle, and i started to cry and just stood steadily and keeping my eyez on axl. this continued to the nex songs, it's so easy and mr.brownstone. then came lald, ycbm, kohd, scom and some solos between. we opened a banner written "mom don't worry i'm with axl again! '93/'06" referring to the banner opened back in '93. axl loved it very much and got it and opened on stage. we also opened another banner after blues written "never mind the formers, here's guns n' roses" he said something like it's funny but fucked up or something i couldnt hear that.
when izzy came to stage with his old hat, crowd went nuts chanting "izzy" all the time. we're so lucky to see him on both istanbul performances. they played think about you, patience and outta get me together and i must say that this is really a band, axl and other guys always joking around, and even izzy was like a part of the band not a guest appearance. axl and izzy was very close and enjoyin being together all the time. at one point axl asked us if we want izzy to sig a song, we went nuts again and we shouted for "14 years" alltogether. izzy turned to axl and said something like i'm not ready.
axl was very happy to be on stage and the view from the stage was very nice, a full moon, bosphorus and 17,000 gnr maniacs. but we laughed when he called bosphorus a "river" . last song was niterain which was done perfectly. and btw, during bumblefoot's don't cry solo, there was a wi-conn problems but he was soo sweet that noone cared and continued to sing along.
encore was maddy, robin's solo and paradise city.
i cried like in 10 songs and danced with my wife, it was the most beautiful nite of my life.
people were very surprised that axl is not a fat, bald guy with no voice and the band does not suck. cuz press and internet idiots , which we have in here also, always write stuff like this.
axl was perfect and enjoyed the show and joked all the time,he was happy to see so many people dancing, chanting, jumping all the time band members played very well and always were in touch with the audience also.
i saw gnr back in '93 and yesterday and i can assure you that only difference between two rosters is we are not grown up with the new members and we don't love them the way we love slash, duff and steven. this new line up is really gettin the gang spirit gnr once had, and deserve all the best cuz they're now the best performing band on Earth.
and they really care for you and do whatever they can to give the best performance to the gnr fans.
cuz they know we only deserve the best and we always had it.
axl promised us to see us again and I BELIEVE HIM.

and thanks to ganzo, you can see our banner above :)

I totally smashed my head. I've had great advetures since I'm from Bulgaria and not from Turkey. Anyway the show was amazing. Could be a little better though but I'm very happy. The crowd went wild during Welcome to The Jungle and It's So Easy. I was sure Axl went later on stage on purpose. People were really hungry for Guns and that was a good trick to make them go wild. Only about 10% knew the new songs even I was asked who's cover is this during Madagascar...??? WTF??? Some stupid fuck around me kept talking that they won't going on stage as he was heard some "CERTAIN" info from "INSIDE STAFF"..Hahaha...Anyway, it was marvelous, I'll put my review soon.
