Title: Just a pro topic about the jams and solos
Post by: jazjme on July 11, 2006, 02:40:18 AM
Been finally watching all these shows since hammerstien boots, and thinking about concerts I have seen over the last 20 yrs, since I was 15, and a thought and a truth came to light for me. As a musician myself in a capacity, and listening as the shows have been goin on and seeing and hearing, this band is gellng nicely. OR rather like fine wine reaches its perfection with care and time and such, so is GNR.

My point is that what these guys are doin every night , are perfecting the ingredients , and if you ever played in a band , its the jamming that brings the comradarie and brotherhood. Its not like hey lets go out there play tunes rehearsh them and thats that. What Ive been seeing is fucking beautiful band interaction. And pisses me off when people complain about the band doin what a band should do band do.  Its feelthe music , crete the vibe , keep it sponmtanious for themselves as well as give the tunes tat fans want to hear jsut the right punch.

zi think back to the 80s, and before my time, early 70s and late 69s, and back then this is what bands do, they fuckng play, they play music, it might not make sence to some cause its not the hit or the tune you wanna hear, case in point any zep fans ? Listen to any liv boots or such. They were a band that jammed!. TO many others to lsit , but my point is. And my analasis of some people that are "bored easy" is that if you want hits and tunes, go see a fuckng pop concert, whre its all laid out, complete with coreographe, and dancers. If you want RNR see GNR, Im sorry the sotes lost thier edge , they now cater to the single minded hits orientated folk, . You wanna hear and see great RNR, look for it in your local rock night club, where all thje bands jam, have fun and interact as ands should. OR hey better yet, SEE GNR, Caue they are basically doin the kinda shows you would see other hungry bands doin who would want so much to be whre GNR are at great rock clubs.

And After all this time I have to laugh at what people complain about, , shit I watched MEtallica show atr Download, and all I got from it was , ok rehersed , and blah, not to knock em cause hey I like em but the fire isnt thier in the band like it is for GNR, and as the band jams more and has fun and gels, as it has been all I see is numerous awesome shows on the horizon. If you et bored tell ya what, go take a piss go get a beer, if its only tunes you want than you are missing so much of what GNR are!

True. One reason why I like Gn'R is their live shows.. You never know what you gonna get, and setlist isn't the same in every concert. Especially on UYI-tour. Like you said; "Its not like hey lets go out there play tunes rehearsh them and thats that." The jams are good extra stuff for filling the spaces between songs, 'cause I rather listen to a jam than just watch roadies moving the piano or some other stuff. And they seem like having fun with them.. I also liked the jam during Axl's rant in Helsinki  But anyway, I would remove Robin's solo before PC. It's too long for that part of the set.. I think that they should play I.R.S / Nightrain / Paradise City (for example) fast and without too long breaks.. like they do WTTJ / It's So Easy / Mr. B at the start. I like the Mother / Paradise City -combination though.

very good point  : ok:
I think that if you are a musician you wanna play, and play anything to the best of your ablities. What they are doing is being musicians, I mean, if you can play, just imagine how cool it would be to play in front of x thousand people with a huge sound system, and a proper rock arena set up. You couldn't get that feeling, atmosphere or volume in any studio. An people will cheer for every not you play (if you play it good)

I'm looking forward to seeing the show (10 days to go!!) Then I will make my mind up

nice post Jaz.

I've thought about this alot in the past month also, especially with most harping on the solos throughout the show.  I haven't seen one person on here that appreciates the guitar and didn't like the solos in the concerts.  I don't see why people can't appreciate the music that they are making.  It's like they want to see GNR play their 15 songs in under an hour and a half and then go home and be happy that they made the 11:30 subway out of town so they can get their normal 9 hours of sleep....boring.  Personally, I wish there were more solos.  When these guys were playing (i know it sounds corny) but you could feel a part of their soul coming out through their hands.

very nicely said Jazjme

the thing that gets me is that from what i can tell there is only like 3 "solos" and "jams" that are any longer than a minute :-\ but people react like it's the end of the world that they take a bit of a break...maybe they are grabbing a drink or stretching their fingers or some shit

Oh, and as I said before, since it was reported that they are never all together rehearsing or jamming it gives them an opportunity to work on song ideas.

While it was a good post and good point it was a pain to read, proof reading doesn't hurt. I'm sorry if I come off as a grammar nazi or a jerk but it is only common courtesy to us to try and make posts readable. :D

I haven't seen Bonham do a solo live and alive. Heard 2 solos only on the records.

Here's a backup comment from John Paul Jones of zep : ok:

Music lovers were not uptight then. An atmosphere of freedom is the mum of music, it seems.

Yeah, it's great just seeing what the band (and each respective member) can come up with on the spot. I love the little jazz thing they do. I agree that they could trim one or two solos by a few seconds just to keep the momentum a bit better, but it's all about feeling and sharing the music, showing what they can do and how they have fun. More power to 'em.

No, you're not the only one!? I saw quite a few shows during the 91-93 tour and always enjoyed them, especially the part when Duff came back on stage and joined in.? ?:)?

I perfectly follow your point!...but
I love solo's and love spontaneous jam's during the set, but during this tour I do not love them as they are boring, they really pull the speed out of the concert, instead of listening to solo's and watching the magic, I get bored... I cannot help it.
Also I feel like the solo's are not 'hanging together', its like: song done, some silence, a solo, silence, another song...
What I liked back in the UYI tour solo's was that the solo's were like part of the songs or they put 2 songs together....it was magic.
The solo from Dizzy though and then going to The Blues is a bit what I mean...

anyhow, my opinion: solo's OK and a must! but if they are boring...please leave them home.

I totally agree with you. They should do the solos more intro-kinda-way.. Double Talkin' Jive -> Solo / Voodoo -> Civil War is a great example IMO. Or '92-'93 when Matt did a drum solo which went straight to YCBM and Slash did a solo right after that. It kinda kept the music going.. Last week in Helsinki I liked the way Finlandia turned in to SCOM and Dizzy's solo in to The Blues.
