Title: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Neemo on July 06, 2006, 04:03:25 PM I just finished the Album survivor in Bad obsession and was given a suggestion by Stoned to try this over here....Whos interested? gimme some ideas folks for format : ok:
I was gonna do it by top ten for each decade but pasnow threw this out... Maybe seperate movie's into genre (Action, Comedy, Drama, Horror) as opposed to decades, then in the final four match up the best of each.. Otherwise, it's kinda tough to compare "Pulp Fiction" to "Vacation" or "Dumb & Dumber" which one you like? anymore ideas? Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Emilie on July 06, 2006, 04:20:24 PM I think pasnow's idea sounds great. He is right, it's very hard to compare movies in different genres, just because they are so... different.
Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Evolution on July 06, 2006, 05:19:21 PM Sounds a great idea to me.
Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: D on July 06, 2006, 05:27:11 PM As long as people dont vote for what they've been fed by the media as the greatest.
I know most will say Casablanca or Citizen Kane or something simply cause thats what we've been told since birth. I watched about 30 minutes of Casablanca and was bored out of my mind. So hopefully people won't do like I think a lot do in the album survivors and vote for what they've grown up being told is the best etc and they will vote for what they truly think is the greatest. Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Jim on July 06, 2006, 06:08:46 PM D, I suggest that you watch all of Casablanca. Also, Citizen Kane gets my vote.......
... Alright, it wouldn't, but I would have nothing against anybody that did vote for it. Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Alright, it wouldn't, but I would have nothing against anybody that did vote for it. My point is, if u honest to God love it then its ok. I just get the feeling that most people sometimes say shit just to fit in or out of fear of being ridiculed. that gets on my nerves. I wonder how many who say certain things are the greatest have actually ever even watched or listened? Id guarantee a very small majority have a fuckin clue as to what they are talkin about, they just say things cause they grew up getting it bashed into their skulls. Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Where is Hassan Nasrallah ? on July 06, 2006, 06:11:32 PM yeah, it's kinda unfair to compare kubricks and godards art with pop stuff like pulp fiction .... ?:)

Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Kujo on July 06, 2006, 07:36:30 PM I like breaking it down by Genre.
To avoid any debate, IMDB should be used as the reference for what a movie is classified as. If D nominates any movie with Bon Jovi in it, he is banned from any further participation. Of course we can save alot of time and just award "Anchorman" as the best movie of all time now. ;D Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: pasnow on July 06, 2006, 08:10:01 PM Of course we can save alot of time and just award "Anchorman" as the best movie of all time now. ;D {sniff sniff} nah, I smell Napoleon Dynamite, judging by the average age of this board. Not my fave though, me, "Rocky" would get my vote. Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Malcolm on July 06, 2006, 08:20:25 PM I like this idea
Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Neemo on July 06, 2006, 10:25:13 PM If D nominates any movie with Bon Jovi in it, he is banned from any further participation. What about Young Guns 2? he dies within five minutes anyway ;D Of course we can save alot of time and just award "Anchorman" as the best movie of all time now. ;D yeah at first i wasn't too sure of this but thinnk if the final 4 looks like StarWars, The Exorcist, Anchorman, Pulp Fiction...hmmm toughy it could work So then do we go by genre in decades? how far back do we go? 70's I'd say i guess :-\ or do we just do like top 10 or 15 of each genre? and is anybody more partial to just top 10 movies of each decade instead of going soley by genre? Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: axl_rose_700 on July 07, 2006, 07:12:44 AM Sounds like a great idea to me!

Not my fave though, me, "Rocky" would get my vote. You have got to be kidding. If that film even makes it into the knockout round for it's genre then I'll refuse to vote on the principal that this thing will be a joke! Sure, it's a funny film, but one of the top ten (... I guess that each round would have ten films.....) comedies of all time? Jog the fuck on mate, surely not by anybodies standards. Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Hammy on July 07, 2006, 02:51:55 PM Genre & Decades i think would be best. I mean fine it would take longer but it's best doing things right. Maybe for the 60s where people here haven't seen to many movies you could just do it all in one rather than splitting it up depending on feedback........
.......and as someone said imdb should definately be used as a reference for what genre what film is.... .......since you like doing lists :hihi: maybe for each genre/decade round you could gather together a list of movies, you know as a reminder, since you see so many movies and often forget the odd 1 or 2.... Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: pasnow on July 07, 2006, 04:38:11 PM Genre AND Decade seems like alot of work, but maybe it will be better in the end. Will last a long time until we finally narrow it down. Neemo if you need a hand with this let me know, I'd be willing to help out. : ok:

Horror/Suspense Comedy Drama If it were these, I'd say Horror/Suspense: The Silence of the Lambs Comedy: Caddyshack, Smokey and the Bandit Drama: One flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Shawshank Redemption Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? On Topic: As for decades, since most of us (including myself on this one :peace:) do not remember many movies enough of the 50's, 60's etc (and someone brought up a good point about NOT voting for Casablance just because it's Casablanca), how about we do decade's as: Pre 1980's (1930-1979) 1980's 1990's 2000's I say Pre-1980's as the 70's and everything prior. I think a few good movie's came out in the 60's, but not enough to build a whole decade for). Also, we'll use IMDB for movies Official release date. Sound good? Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Neemo on July 08, 2006, 10:42:14 AM I say Pre-1980's as the 70's and everything prior. Sound good? might work i dunno the average ages of people who will be voting in this...I imagine? though, that like the albums, the farther we go back the less nominations we will get Action Adventure Animation Biography Comedy Crime Documentary Drama Family Fantasy Film-Noir Game-Show History Horror Music Musical Mystery News Reality-TV Romance Sci-Fi Short Sport Talk-Show Thriller War Western? ? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say maybe we should disregard the red genres...please gimme your input on this. Click on this link and then you can browse the top movies of each genre to give you an idea http://www.imdb.com/Sections/Genres/ Also we gotta narrow it down to 4 or so major genres then whatever is the first major genre on IMDB is what the Genre will be: eg: Alien (1979), Directed by: Ridley Scott, Genre: Sci-Fi / Horror / Thriller & Aliens (1986), Directed by: James Cameron, Genre: Action / Horror / Sci-Fi / Thriller I think the major genres should be Action, Comedy, Drama, Horror and generally be broken down like this: Action (includes Adventure; Animation; Family; Fantasy; Sci-Fi; Sport; War; Western) Comedy (stands alone) Drama (includes Biography, Crime; Film-Noir; History; Music; Musical; Mystery; News; Romance) Horror (includes Thriller) now in the case of Alien (1st one) it says Sci-fi first...but the first Major Genre is Horror so that overrides it, where as Alien contains Action and Horror but is considered an Action flick because IMDB has that listed first. Movies like The Usual Suspects (which is listed as a Crime/Mystery/Thriller) is considered a Drama because, even though it has no major genre listed, Crime falls under the major genre of Drama. Just my opinon feel free to add your thoughts and ideas  Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Let's get it on!! Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: supaplex on July 08, 2006, 02:22:56 PM i think that the sci-fi should be a stand alone genre, i can't see putting star wars and lethal weapon together in the same genre. but that's just an opinion.
and i said to neemo in the other thread that we should have a 3-4 days voting period not like the 2 days like the albums finals. so we can get a chance to view a movie if we don't know it. Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Neemo on July 08, 2006, 03:01:36 PM i dunno...there are sci fi movies of all walks...and in it's most basic form starwars is still only an action movie (IMDB categorizes it as Action/Adventure/Fantasy/Sci-Fi) so by my format I proposed above it still qualifies as a action movie ;) . but if we do genres we gotta set some ground rules down or some movies are elegible for all 4 of the main categories i suggested
IMO Sci-Fi a sub-category and also doing a top ten of 4 genres and 4 different decades for each genre...that will take a while... but like in the album survivor, the game is as much mine as it is yours, if it's not fun people won't vote...so I'll go with a majority vote : ok: Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: pasnow on July 08, 2006, 03:45:28 PM This may look crazy at first, but I think at some point it'd be cool to mix it up a bit, kinda like the Sweet 16 in NCAA. To boost some life back into the voting, we begin mixing up genre and competing them against each other (Action vs Horror, Drama vs Comedy). This will be done once the voting is complete for best movie of each decade per genre.? It may help liven it up, as opposed to repeatedly voting Best Comedy.. Best Comedy.. Best Comedy.. etc.

Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Neemo on July 08, 2006, 05:59:14 PM yeah i wasn't sure on how to classify animation or family....but normally they are action oriented (most of the ones I've seen anyway) and you can't really group family with animation cuz not all animated shows are family oriented...seriously though is there enough great movies to warrant a who separate survivor for them?
the most likely animated movies to be nominated are pixar and disney flicks which tend to be action/adventure type movies. Akira is action, Animatrix is action....i dunno...again everybody post your thoughts on this idea too if anything action and adventure should be considered one and the same for the purposes of this survivor Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Dead Leaves (action) Princess Mononoke (fantasy) Spirited Away (fantasy/family) Ghost in the Shell (Sci-Fi) Toy Story (comedy) Watership Down (umm...rabbit film?) Fantasia (no, seriously!) The Lion King (don't deny it!) Aladdin (Adventure) Akira (Sci-fi) That's just off the top of my head. It's just my opinion but I reakon there's more than enough for it to have it's own section. If they're not good enough they'll get killed off in the knockout rounds. Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Axl4Prez2004 on July 08, 2006, 06:55:12 PM Fuck sake. I'd throw these into the mix. Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Jim on July 09, 2006, 06:21:56 AM Hold on a second. ....
I was just thinking, why bother crushing all these genres together just so that we can do it by decade (a futile persuit in my humble opinion). Why don't we just do a round for every genre listed in that post, by that poster, on the last page! Obviously not Talk Show, Short, Reality-TV or Game-Show, but INCLUDING Documentary! (I don't understand why that one was in red................) It stilll needs some triming. For example I don't get why News is there, why there is a music and musical round (surely anything "music" will fall under biography or documentary), and I still think that there should be a round for foreign film. I think that it would be a lot more fun, not to mention easier, to do it that way than by some mashed up genre definitions done by decade. How many Westerns are we going to see appear otherwise, if they're classed as 'action.' So... Yeah. Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Axl4Prez2004 on July 09, 2006, 06:50:32 AM ugh, westerns. I think I've seen one that I enjoyed. The pre-cursor to 24, done in real-time, High Noon.
Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Danny Top Hat on July 09, 2006, 07:36:55 AM I'm with Jim, I don't see a need to do it by decade. I'm happy to compare Cassablanca to Moulin Rouge, etc.. I don't think decade really matters.
Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: jameslofton29 on July 09, 2006, 08:01:32 AM Jim and Danny actually make a really good point. Great films are timeless. No reason to date them.
Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Neemo on July 09, 2006, 08:25:59 AM well i agree but it gets hard to narrow it down...how many nominations do we allow? and how many form each genre to vote off? if the list gets too big it's just hard to digest all the movies there.
I figured on doing something similiar to what i did in the albums one where i take the top 3 or 4 for each decade and mix them together and do a survivor based on that... and someone suggested 21st century, 90's, 80's and then everything prior to the 80's..not so sure we shouldn't throw a 70's in there too for us oldtimers :hihi: but that would mean 16 - 20 movies from each genre as an elimination thread that is lots and that way we don't forget any movies that we may have if we say just nominated like our 20 favorite movies. thats just my thoughts anyway....it worked for albums...in the top five we ended up with a 90's disk 2 80's disks a 60's disk and a 70's disk and that was widdled down from a list of 15 albums but like i said we'll do what the majority wants Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: pasnow on July 09, 2006, 12:16:09 PM However we do it, it may be best to be divisible down to 2. I think 16 per genre is best, then narrow it down to 8, then 4, then 2 then the 'Greatest"
Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Neemo on July 10, 2006, 08:49:34 AM Hold on a second. Yeah. movies like walk the line are considered music genre and citizen kane is considered in the news genre. Also we are doing greatest movie ever...do movies like "Super-size Me" or "the Outlaw Jose Wales" me will actually compete for the top prize? while documentaries are interesting i just dunno if they would even get a small percentage of the vote... I mean i can go with nominations for each genre but most movies are mashed into 4 or 5 categories anyway so it's impossible to determine...ok I'm gonna start a new thread and we'll talk about genres and decades : ok: Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: D on July 10, 2006, 02:15:42 PM Im glad to see this thread is evolving..
I like the different genres. Does everyone see what Im tryin to say on Casablanca, Citizen Kane etc..??????? If u have saw those films and honest to GOD think they are the greatest, by all means vote away. But I have a feeling that a whole lot of people probably have never even watched these flicks, but since they've always heard they are the greatest will vote for them just so they dont feel like a retard for voting Rocky over one of those. People get peer pressure even on message forums. On that album survivor, the fact that LED Zeppelin had 4 albums in it was a fuckin joke. Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Neemo on July 10, 2006, 02:37:40 PM I hear ya DTM but there is no way to know if people actually like or have seen the movies or not unfortuantely...also zep tops charts everywhere so they must be alright :hihi: :peace:
AC/DC and Metallica were the surprises IMO...i mean Floyd and Hendrix didn't crak the top 5 so that has to say something, doesn't it :-\ Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Citizen Kane as 'News' because, why?... Charles Foster Kane's job! Or maybe because of how the film opens? As far as Walk the Line goes, it's a Biographical film through and through. For the record, Rocky won Best Picture, Citizen Kane didn't. ;D Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Well it's actually listed as a Drama but it has news as a sub genre And biographical is also listed in walk the line but it's main genre is Drama as well. music is just a sub-genre can you honestly say that some of your favorite movies are Documentaries? I'm not really following what you are trying to get at here. :-\ Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Jim on July 10, 2006, 03:09:39 PM I studied a module on documentary film last year. Maybe that's it. I wasn't looking at it with a view to a winner, I just thought it would be interesting.

Post by: oldgunsfan on July 10, 2006, 04:21:34 PM Personally i think this whole idea is almost fucking impossible :hihi:
That being said, off the top of my head are some favorites: Gone with the Wind, Clerks, True Romance, Terminator 2, Back to the Future, Godfather 1&2, Rocky, and a bunch of others I'm drawing blanks on ;D Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Kujo on July 11, 2006, 09:12:34 AM Jim,
If it makes you feel better, when the proper category comes up, Seven Samurai is getting a nomination from me : ok: I also dont think breaking it down by decades is necessary in this matter. Title: Re: Greatest Movie Ever Survivor? Post by: Madagascar88 on July 11, 2006, 10:31:40 AM Use Your Illusion I - Live DVD from Guns N' Roses == greatest movie of all-time

Woo! That's me, you and the Whatever Man for sure. I'd trust Danny to throw a vote in as well. That's at least four of us, which should get it in, and then everybody watches it, we have a winner! |
