So they played IRS instead of Madagascar?

I really could do without Think About You, Rocket Queen would be much better.
OR a UYI tune ;P

The dress... is this like a late initiation?

well, it's ABOUT TIME Chris Pittman got hazed for being in GNR... i mean come on, who else gets the opportunity to join the greatest organization in the world without getting hazed???

well...

either that or Chris is trying to push Axl towards putting that kilt back on

You don't have to be gay to enjoy wearing a dress.

I'm certain that Chris wouldn't wear a dress to 'out' himself.

I'm back, and what can I say?

It has been unbelievable two days for me, to see Guns n' Roses two nights in a row has been very addictive, I wanna see them  tomorrow again and day after that and the day after that!

First night I had a seat but tonight I had floor ticket and boy did it rock! I was in the 2nd row from stage and I had fun like never before.  ;D

I'm gonna tell you a bit more about these gigs later, but now I'm way too tired and have to get some sleep, cause tomorrow I'm off to Ruisrock. What a dream week for me, two Gn'R gigs and sunday I'm gonna see fuckin' Tool!

Well at the gig I thought it was nothing special. Axl found it funny I guess 'cause he mentioned it.

A man wearing  a dress? So?

The dress wasn't like tight or feminine in any way so it wasn't like he was doing drag or anything... It was long, black ... Hell, even I could wear one of those!  ;D

Another nice gig! :D

Here's a few notes:

-Axl was in a GREAT mood throughout the show, he constantly had that "kid in a candystore" type of smile on :) He also paid sincere sounding respects to the audience

-During Paradise City's "ragz to richez" part, Axl pointed at Fortus

-Someone threw a furry animal on stage, Axl put it on the opening where the pyrotechnics come from, saying "I'm gonna sit its ass on the pyro!" and laughing

-I felt really proud to see the audience go so crazy for GNR, and that two arenas were sold out over here. Way to go! :peace:

Title: Re: July 6th - Helsinki, Finland
Post by: unclezoso on July 06, 2006, 08:04:32 PM
Wow.

It was even better than yesterday. Axl seemed to be on a better mood... smiling all the time.
I can't concentrate right now to write properly. Just a few random thoughts...

- IRS took me by surprise. The fact that they played it and also that it's so much better live.

- The show was mixed really well. Axl's voice dominated the whole soundscape but also the guitar solos and leads came through nice and clear. Bumblefoot has definitely found his place in this band. I didn't know that he can be so bluesy too. And counterwise Richard Fortus can shred!

- The heavy part on Better rocks! Even the weird robot part worked well as people cheered during that

- I didn't hear what Axl commented on Pittman's dress but after Axl's comment Pittman showed his ass and Axl laughed

- Madagascar is such a good encore. And tonight it came out perfectly (unlike yesterday)

- Now I understand why they play Out Ta Get Me. Axl's performance on that was just insane. "Take that one to your finnish hearts!"

Cheers mr self destruct  I'm also going to Ruisrock to check out Tool. Amazing to hear my two favourite singers, axl & mjk, on a same week  :)

Yeah and at some point, I think during one of those jams, Axl and some of the band members had a little toy animal war when Axl threw that thing towards Pittman, who then threw it back to Axl.

Axl and the other members were having much fun and goofin' around a lot. It was great to see them so good-spirited.  :)

Just got back home and I must say that this was the greatest concert I've ever been! Yesterday was amazing but today was even better. The crowd was jumping, dancing and singing along non-stop and no wonder Axl thanked the audience several times. People around me didn't recognize the new songs but by the end of the song they were allready dancing and singing along and especially Better got a great reception. Axl was very energetic and his voice was again perfect and it is so fascinating to watch him perform. I really liked all the new guitar players but I must say that Robin stood out and he seemed to get the biggest cheers from the crowd also (after Axl of course).

These two nights have made me realize what a great live band this is. I knew they were good, but not this good! Amazing!

I'm tired but happy, now to bed...  :peace:

I wasn't planning on sending that many updates of the second show, but fuck, there was nothing else to do. I was high above the stage, looking it from the Robin's side. I had great vision both on stage and behind it... but it all felt like I was somewhere outside of it all watching other people in the show. The upper seating bowl just seems so separate from it all, it's really REALLY hard to get in the mood. And then there's a 20-something couple sitting next to you, seems like they are on their first date or something, neither of them moves or even talks to each other. After four first songs (WTTJ, Easy, Brownstone, LALD) you hear someone saying that the first song was pretty good, but he didn't really know the others. On the other side you have a bunch of pretty girls but they're not at all interested in the show. Of the 20 songs they were watching probably 6 or 7, hanging somewhere else the rest of the time. At 10:30 couple of corporate dudes with a few beers decide they should start booing and soon everyone will join them and the band comes on stage. It didn't happen, they just managed to annoy me. They also made a deal that at midnight, the band playing then or not, they will leave back to the hotel. Nice going dudes.

And I'm sort of quiet myself. I'm not able to jump and sing alone when there's emptiness and quietness all around. So there was nothing much to do than fiddle with the mobile. Never, NEVER again to a seating place, at least not that high. I was thinking about sneaking to the floor with my yesterday's ticket (it probably would have been easy) but the visibility of my seat was really pretty good, so I decided to stay there before the show started. Wrong decision.

I really don't know if the gig was good or not. I was too outside of it all. And although Ron tried to wave us to get going, the bands are not playing for the upper bowl. We were just standing there in the darkness, watching the show going on below us. Luckily I saw the first gig from the floor and have good memories about that. I'm glad to see that others have enjoyed the second show as much as I did in the first show.

But I saw a HTGTH T-shirt in the train station. I wanted to go and say hi, but as I said, I'm the stereotypical Finnish quiet type and kind of pissed-off about the show (which had nothing to do with the band or their performance), so I decided not to. Hi there, dude!

What a night! Better was so amazing!!

Does anyone have a picture of Axl with a whistle he used in Paradise City?!
It would look very good in GNR collection because I got it yesterday!!!

 :D

It's a simple yellow whistle.

-Someone threw a furry animal on stage, Axl put it on the opening where the pyrotechnics come from, saying "I'm gonna sit its ass on the pyro!" and laughing

That was fucking hilarious ;D And before that he kinda played with the animal.. walkin' it over PA or something.

Well anyway, I was too tired to post a review yesterday so I'm going to do it now.

When I got inside the arena I was sitting in the corridor next to some guy, so I asked if he has any idea how late the band was tonight. Well he didn't have a clue, but when he left I saw that he was wearing a HTGTH-shirt : ok:
The band started late again, but that's okay to me 'cause when I heard WTTJ's intro riff I forgot all the waiting. There was some tight-asses around me, just standing but doing nothing really. I felt like an idiot (again) jumpin' around, singing along, clapping my hands etc.. For fuck sake, we were at Gn'R concert and people around me are acting like in a court or something. But I must say that rest of the crowd was very energetic.. better than in the first show IMO. Thank god there was this foreign couple at the second row dancing and singing so I had some company :hihi: But when I looked to the upper seats where people when rockin' their asses off, I just hoped that I could be there. But the security says NO! :P Anyway, the band seemed to be even more energetic than it was in the first show.. I loved their performance :peace:

My highlights:

-WTTJ as an opener just works so well.

-Finlandia.. people were standing on their seats and gave very loud ovation to Finck.

-Dizzy's solo was amazing like it was in the first show  Crowd loved it.

-Axl on top of the piano on The Blues was a great spice for the song.. alot of people got interested when he did this. I hope someone video taped it.

-Out Ta Get Me.. very energetic performance.

-The furry animal :hihi:

-I.R.S.. I was waiting for this in the first show so I'm glad they played it!

-Paradise City.. I think that people knew they wouldn't see this band for a while, so they got up from their asses and started to dance and shit (even the tight-asses around me :o Except those who already left).. I blew my voice and my hands were friggin' tired but I didn't care. It was amazing end for these to nights.

-Going home. I don't know why, but when I got to the train station and bought a coffee and I was sitting on the ground drinkin' the coffee.. I realised that I had just seen Guns n' Roses two times, and I have nothing to worry about. I don't care if I don't even get in to the train, I just saw Guns n' Roses. I can wait three hours for the next train. I don't have to sleep 'cause I just saw Guns n' Fuckin' Roses! It was a great feeling :hihi:

Back to the gig.. After the show Axl said "I'll see you again!", so I hope they'll be here again sometime. One thing that I didn't like was Maddy, 'cause it was played so late on the set. It was better when they played it earlier. After this song there was only me + 7 people on my row. And there was like 15 seats. After Nightrain there was only me + 5 guys and two of them were almost passed out. Thank god the rest of the audience really got into PC..

I had two amazing nights and I will never forget them :peace:

GUNS N` ROSES STOLE MY SUNGLASSES!!!!
Well, not really :P
I throw my glasses to the stage maybe during PATIENCE (or just before) when Axl was very close to my section of the sittingplace. It was very classy throw i must say :peace:
Landed right next to Axl?s feet but he didn?t notice them. Axl moved back to the center of the stage and Richard came to the "sunglass-spot", almost crushed them accidentally. And he left to other parts of the stage too.
And then came Ron Thal, playing hard with the song that was on, noticed my glasses, picked them up and put them on for a while :smoking: then Ron probably understood that they were too dark for a stage so he just put the glasses nicely on the top of the amplifier (or something). So...Ron Thal wore my sunglasses, pretty-fucking-cool
Great gig again, i personally think that Madagascar was played MUCH better yesterday but i REALLY missed Chinese Democracy  Why on earth GN`R skipped that gem both nights ???

This a fucking awesome too! I was rocking myself out and standing during the whole gig (I had seats really close to the stage in this gig). It was awesome though I can't even compare it to the feeling I had on 5.7 when I was in front row  :)

I forgot to mention that during the early part of the set, Axl mentioned that at the backstage he heard and saw how people were clapping their hands and stomping their feets.. or something like that. It was cool! :peace: And like Wednesday, there was also waves going around the arena before the show.

WOW! What a great night!  :peace:

I was there with my girlfriend, and we had the best night of our lives. My only worry was if I may have some major panic attack (I have those sometimes), but beer helped me a lot  ::) To be honest I don`t remember much details of the show....was just screaming along with axl whole night, and sweating a lot....there was fucking hot! Great show.

This morning my GF woke up and said "you know what?...Axl is GOD". Yeah...good girl :)

WOW! What a great night!

That's the best review so far! ;D But it's true.

I heard that someone got a video camera inside and filmed the whole show  Anyway, there's already a 3min clip of Ron's solo on youtube. Bad quality though as it is recorded with a phone :hihi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgO2gUzwD0c&search=guns%20n%20roses%20finland

The best concert ever!!
I loved axls voice, it was great! Even the solos were great. I think axl nailed the high notes perfectly.
Btw, axl said that fortus is from new york again! I thought he is from new jersey? Ok whatever.
The audience was great (i think), of course the scream, when the lights went out, was priceless! Amazing sound.
The toy thing was very funny. Also, audience didnt throw bottles to stage. Instead, Robin threw water bottles to audience. At least i saw that. I did have to leave earlier to get a taxi to home.
 : ok:great show

WOW, don't really know what to say... This hole experience has been priceless ;D I really enjoy being at the concert. BUT...I don't understand why people had to move to the bar etc... I had seat so I saw people constatly moving on and off. And some were really drunk.... ???(I shouldn't worry about that....)
Most important is that Axl sounded great and behave different way. (Meaning being polite, cheerfull etc.)
And last song was Paradise City, it's was fucking amazing to see people dancing, jumping and singing... Great way to end show ;)

the show was ok. i do have the usual complaints.

the endless guitar solos and "70's porno movie muzak" jams between songs sorta killed the momentum of the show for me...

it also sucked big time that they started 2 hours late.

to be brutally honest, i wasn't blown away... i saw VR two years ago, and they put on a better show IMO.

but, Axl truly does have a killer voice these days and the band seemed pretty tight... i wish Brain would've been there, though.

all in all, it was "just" ok.

Btw, axl said that fortus is from new york again! I thought he is from new jersey? Ok whatever.

i'm  pretty sure he said new jersey at show #2, but new york show #1 if i remember right

He said Richard was from New York in the Stockholm gig too! And then something like "No.. I screwed that up... You're from Jersey"

Thanks for all the reviews! Sounds like another great show.

I just came back from Finland, I had such an amazing time, I will write more later, I promise.

I wanna say a big thank you to jarmo for taking his time with my updates from the show.

While I'm at it, I just want to say that Madagascar, Out Ta Get Me and Better were the best songs at the July 5th show and that Madagascar and I.R.S. was the best at the 6th.

What wrong with one spectator's honest opinion? I'd hate it if he stated his personal opinion as a fact, but he doesn't does he?
He perfers A show of some other band to that of the tight band with a killer vocal, most of us love. So what? Tastes deffer.

 : ok:great show

you had to leave earlier to get a taxi??

During the last song.It was almost ending, but i was forced by my tired relatives to go to the hotel. I was pissed off, but i couldnt stayed there longer alone since i know nothing about Helsinki.
I dont remember much about the show anymore, i was so tired. But happy.

First about the taxi thing: There was a news story that aftre the forst GNR gig in Helsinki the taxi lines were 3-4 hours long! So no wonder some not-hardcore people might get a little scared and want to leave early.

Another pretty funny thing was that the Finnish promoters Welldone received complaints about the first gigs late start because some people had so much difficulties getting home after the show. Welldone said that they compensated this by giving free tickets to the second show for the people who suffered most for the late start. And guess what - the second show started and ended even later so the people with those free tickets probably had the same problems again!

The Finnish daytime paper Ilta-Sanomat had a column about Guns N' Roses today. The writer is called Jone Nikula, who is a big time rock figure in Finland. He has written books about Finnish heavy metal and rock music, he's been a rock DJ in radio, tour manager for Hanoi Rocks, marketing director in EMI record company's Finnish branch, and also one of the judges in Finnish Idols contest where he's the judge with brutal and onspoken honesty.

So when I noticed him doing a column about GNR, I braced myself to receive another portion of sarcastic and maybe even evil comments of member changes and all that that we have been reading from the journalists. But Nikula gave me a good surprise! Here's the translation:

The shadow of accomplishment

Guns N' Roses were the most noteworthy band in the late 1980's and early 1990's. With their debute album AFD the band brought danger, chaos, rage and arrogance back to mainstream rock. As the band itself and their record company got rich because of their statistic-breaking success, so did also promoters, record store chains and workers repairing hotel rooms. They also were opening the road for the grunge phenomenom a few years later.

With their second album, Lies, the band in passing invented the unplugged thing. And with it they bought time to work on their 1991 double albums Use Your Illusion 1 and 2.

After that it has been a lot quieter on record publishing front. The odd tours, continuing changes in personnel, stories about money disputes and megalomania, and the everlasting postponing of Chinese Democracy album has regularly kept the band in headlines - not always in very flattering ones.

* * *

Yesterday and on Wednesday the band visited Finland. The gigs were preceded by news of singer Axl Rose acting up, the lateness of their shows and a brawl that landed the singer in jail in Stockholm. On the other hand, we were also hearing reports of good performances and interesting new songs coming from the music world.

So it seems there's still enough chaos and arrogance, and even rage at least for the hotel guards, and undoubtedly the one guard that Rose bit in the leg was getting feelings of danger, too.

In Helsinki everything went smoothly at least on the first gig. At its best, the night in Arena gave us great rocking. At its worst it was still good entertainment.

* * *

Obviously Guns N' Roses are not the same band anymore that they were when they changed the course of rock music. The band consisting substance abusing, broke dudes has changed to musicians playing behind the frontman Axl Rose. The new songs also made it obvious that the grandiloquence that Axl Rose brought to the band already in the 1980's has been given even more important role. One could also note that the band's best songs all come from the debute album from 1987.

And still, after all this cynical tearing, it also became very clear that Axl Rose is doing the right thing by continuing to use the band name. During the couple of hours in the Areena, he proved that Guns N' Roses is still more than a touring outside museum of 80's heavy rock. As a band they might still be unbalanced and prisoners of their former accomplishments, but they are still relevant.

In my 1980's world Guns N' Roses were everywhere. But the band on stage this week in Helsinki wasn't a nostalgia act. It was a band oozing of second coming even though they might still be looking for their form and balance. The shadow of the band's accomplishments is long, but a new sun is already peeping out in the horizon.

i'd suppose what's wrong with me is the fact that i'm not a hardcore Axl nutswinger like you.

sorry about that.  ::)

GUNS N` ROSES STOLE MY SUNGLASSES!!!!?
So...Ron Thal wore my sunglasses, pretty-fucking-cool?
Great gig again, i personally think that Madagascar was played MUCH better yesterday but i REALLY missed Chinese Democracy  Why on earth GN`R skipped that gem both nights ???

+ my Q&A with Ron (with his permission ofcourse)------------------------>

<< Hello!
THANKS for two GREAT shows here in Finland!
You really fit to new GN`R and i hope that you are part of the writing process also in the near future.
Very nice of you to play Don?t Cry, cause without you fans wouldn?t hear it LIVE at all. So thanks for that too!

Thank YOU ! You all were wonderful people and it was a pleasure to be there with you all :)

<< ps. do you remember 2nd show in Finland, you picked MY sunglasses from the stage. I throwed them when Axl was very near of the place where i was sitting. It was a VERY good throw i must say ;) Richard almost crushed my glasses minutes later and then you came, picked them up, tried them on and put them on the top of the amplifier (or something...i?m not a musician or technician)...

haha, those were yours! Cool! Yeah, I saw them on the ground and thought "someone's gonna smash these, I'd better put them somewhere safe!" lol

<< pps. you are doing FANTASTIC job with GUNS!!!!
ppps. Frank Ferrer was also AWESOME!!!
pppps. gongratulations to BRAIN also! >>

Thank you thank you thank you ! :D

<< ppppps. ask Tommy to play some Replacements stuff as his solo-section with his bass (that would be something...) I LOVED THE REPLACEMENTS!!!

Great idea... :D

<< pppppps. you partied with Kimi R?ikk?nen (Formula1 driver) day before yesterday??

Yeah, then had dinner over his new house before the show - wore his hat on stage - what a cool fucking guy! :D

<< GOOD LUCK WITH THE REST OF THE TOUR!

Thanks so much! Hope to see you again! :)
