Title: What is is about GNR?
Post by: johngnr on July 04, 2006, 04:35:36 AM
We all know about the controversy of Axl forming a new band without Slash, Duff etc and calling it GNR - but why is it that controversial? Queens of the Stone Age have only one orginal member left in the form of Homme and there is no problems as far as i'm aware, Nine Ince Nails have never had a set lineup yet noone berates Reznor for using the name. Primus has had/had numerous drummers and guitarists (inlcuding Brain and BH) and yet nobody criticises Claypool for using the Primus name. So why the controversy with GNR? Discuss

The list of bands where positions have been occupied by many more than one person would be almost endless. I think a lot of Guns fans either just dont know a whole lot about music or they feel such a strong emotional attachment to the old band they selfishly want that stuck in some kind of timewarp.

Move on people, I say

but Claypool has always been the brainchild of Primus...

in GnR slash was just as big of part, if not bigger than Axl, the top hat, the mass of hair the JD, the Sunburst Les Paul, the stance...Slash exuded GnR Axl and slash are meant to be a team to alot of people they are 2 parts of one whole.

And duff has a huge following too...but not quite as big as slash and axl...the bleach blonde hair and the white bass

Axl never formed a new band. G N' R has always been there, and has always had band members.
Slash and duff formed a new band

Trent wrote all NIN songs alone(and still does). Axl didn't. So that's pretty much the case. If Axl would've written AFD and UYI alone, no one would complain.

off the top of my head, I'd say
1) Inside the industry
There're people who have counted on a reunion to milk it and for this reason or other who bear grudges against Axl.
2) the media
that enjoy creating scandals to manipulate na?ve fans.
3) The masses are very often
media victims/malicious gossip mongers.
4) GNR was once the biggest band with the most dangerous image that has attracted a massive number of the most dangerous fans in the world including the types of 3) and 5).
5)obsessive fans who are in identity crisis against the current and under the impression that they have the band in their possession.

All the above factors plus some other things combined are the cause for the controversy.

Gn'R was waaayyy bigger than those bands. Also all the members blended together to make their sound.  Axl's shit sounds totally different now.. NIN and Primus records all sound the same no matter who is in the bands. Not that anyone really knew any members besides Les or Trent anyway.
