Title: GN'R 's "evolution" from 1997-2006
Post by: heinous on June 25, 2006, 07:06:38 PM
(If this is Dead Horse material....)

1997-2000

About a 3 year period with Axl, Dizzy, Paul, Robin, Tommy, and Josh Freese, who reportedly developed enough material for multiple albums....

2001-2002

Josh left and was replaced by Brain, Buckethead joined, Paul was replaced by Richard, and of course the first "attempt" at a tour....

2003-2006

Another 3 year period where Buckethead left and work on the album continued....

Axl said they had some 70 songs back in 2000.? This year he said they had wittled it down to 34 (or was it 36?), with 26 done, and 13 for the actual record.

My point in all of this is, while we could have heard the new album around 2002, it was possibly a very different album than the one we're looking for this fall.? Indeed, while Axl could have released a record at any point along the way, it seems like he's chosen to hold back as long as he feels he can make it better - even at the risk of the new GN'R being labeled a failure.? I personally think the rotating door of musicians has had a lot to do with it, with each contributing and adding to it.

I like the whole idea of there being a "sifting process" as to the songs themselves.? While the band may have enough material for more than 1 record, they DO NOT have the luxury of spreading them over multiple albums.? If there are going to be 13 tracks on the first album, they HAVE TO be the top 13 songs they've written.? No ifs, ands, or buts.

Just my two cents....

The  13 tracks on the first album , Chinese Democracy , must be the best 13 tracks from all material , do not hold Big Guns for the second album , because the band wil be jugde so hard on this album so put out the best you have AXL  : ok:

On the eddie trunk show he was very clear about saying he worked on and off on the record. I think maybe we are overthinking what Axl is doing. I don't think not releasing the album has much to do with reworking songs again and again.

A lot of the songs we've heard were from the 1998-2000 days.  IRS, TWAT, Catcher and The Blues were all mentioned as songs that were heard by Rolling Stone in the article written in 1999 or 2000 and Chinese Democracy is from those days too.  Rhiad was played on the 2000 New Years show so that's also an older one.  The newer songs we've heard are Better and Madagascar.  I'm anxious to hear more of the stuff that Buckethead had a bigger hand in writing

Wasn't Rhiad and Maddy both aired at the same show for the first time?

Good point, I didn't remember that RIR was that early in the year that year.  So I suppose the only really new song we've heard is Better.
