According to Ryan Key of Yellowcard.  Not sure if this has been posted before but in the July 2006 edition of STUFF magazine they had a section on rock and roll and Key was asked who was the biggest rock star of all time.  His response.
"Axl Rose.  He did tons of drugs, dated tons of models and made the rest of the band bail on him.  Rock stars are a thing of the past, but I think Axl would be the biggest feature in the rock star museum if they built one."

They also did a front man family tree, and according to them Axl Rose, Vince Neil, and Bret Michaels evolved from David Lee Roth.  And Axl Rose spawned Chris Cornell, Layne Staley and SCOTT WEILAND.

dont think axl did heroin and steven did but i think axl was usually good about not doing the hard drugs too much. Scott on the other hand ha heroing for brteakfast lunch late snack dinner and midnight snack.

I think the fact that Axl didnt die at his peak automatically discounts him from those "biggest rock star". Id say the person who embodies RnR most is Jim Morrison.

Yeah, I'm not sure Ryan Key has the ultimate say in who exactly is the biggest rock star of all time, but I thought it was interesting and true.  Unfortunately, part of what makes Axl such a big Rock Star is the stuff people constatntly complain about.  Going on late for shows, cancellations, riots, jumping into crowds.  That's what makes Axl so great.  You've gotta take the good with the bad.  However, so far so good this time around.  No problems to speak of.  They averted disaster at Download, 16 years ago the old band probably would've walked off stage.  Maybe Axl's having a bit of a change of heart as he grows wiser.  Or maybe he knows this could be his last shot to get the new band off and running and he can't afford any slipups.  Either way, good stuff.  I can't wait for a release date, and concert dates for the US.  But until then I hope all the European fans rock their asses off when GNR comes to a city near you.

I agree with the Elvis comment.  There has never been any rock star as big or as popular or as cutting edge as Elvis was.  He broke so many barriers from his radical dancing (for the times) to being the first white man to sing a black man's song live on TV.  If you look at things relative to their time, Elvis was and is the biggest rock star of all time.

Axl may fall out in the top 10, but not above Mick Jaggar, Steven Tyler, Elvis, Morrison, Angus Young, and Jimmy Paige...at least IMO.

Axl Rose is a rock god in my opinion.  Others of worth are Jim Morrison, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Slash and Jimmi Hendrix.  For the girls I have to put Janis Joplin in there!

Axl and Slash were the last true rock stars.  Axl hasn't released an album in 13 years and still causes a stir wherever he goes and whatever he does.  Slash is still universally recognized.  I think the love-hate thing that Axl has going on with both the media and music fans is pretty unique, the fact that he is still as notorious as he is, and that he is still beloved by his fans and there are still haters who harp on his every move, bashing him and everything he does whenever they get the chance shows his that he's a rock star in every sense.  If he were irrelevant the haters wouldn't still, all these years later, still be so dedicated to bashing him

but he is known the world over... He may not be liked by everyone but I mean the guy can drop by the white house and say hi..

Jim Morrison is THE greatest rock star of all time.

Axl is the Frankenstein of rock music. Part Jim, part Mick, part Janice, part Freddy, part DLR. If you were to build a rock star using the best and worst parts of the greatest rock stars of all time you'd get Axl.

He has turned in to the biggest joke of all-time.  He is not the epitome of a rock star he is the epitome of how to fuck up a career.

Why are people there?  To hear new songs?  No, they go to hear the songs they grew up with.  He may sell out every venue and everywhere he goes but so does Weird Al.  He could have been one of the greats but he pissed that away in the last 13 years of silence.  This current tour is nothing but a blast from the past sprinkled with a few new mediocre songs.  The magic is gone...

I do not think that any of the new stuff that I have heard or seen live is that great.  Not bad but not great either.  I do not think that they stack up to the old stuff or to other bands that I am in to now.

I agree with absolutely everything you say, dont worry, Im sure Im not the only one:

I think many people are there due to the following:

1) That they are mad obsessives like the folks on these boards.
2) They are casual fans who have a copy of GH and dont know much else and never really knew the proper line up.
3) They were fans back in the day and arent aware that Slash etc jumped ship long ago.
4) People think that its a reunion tour because Axl has been away since 1993.

I agree that the new songs are pretty bollocks. TWAT excepted - great song, sounds just like  Slash solo to me. Maybe thats why.

The 'biggest rock star of all time' should more time being a rock star and releasing albums and not a primadonna berk that attacks women and bites people after being in hiding learning to be a numerologist or whatever for 13 years.

When I think of "rock stars" the first people that come to my mind are Axl Rose, Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler, and Kurt Cobain. Maybe Jim Morrison, also. And Elvis, since I guess he was kinda the king and all. Personally, as of right now, I would consider Mick Jagger the biggest rock star of all time. But Axl isn't far behind, plus he's only 44. If you think about it, GNR weren't around very long, they only released three CDs basically (not counting Lies or TSI), and yet they're still considered legends. In another 20 years, after Chinese Democracy and whatever other CDs the new GNR release, as well as possible reunions that might happen one day, I do believe Axl will go down as the greatest rock star of all time. True rock stars are a dying breed anyway; I can't think of one person out there now who is a TRUE rock star, a REAL rock star. Axl and Kurt Cobain were the last two, imo.
