What do people get out of hacking? Do they think just because they hack a site they're Godly? If an Admin keeps backups, usually th damage isn't really worth the time and risk of hacking, but I really don't get why they think they're cool.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to hack a guns n' roses forum. The world's gone insane...

most hackers nowadays do it to prove the forum is vulnerable and they ask the admin to update the site and install a patch for the bugs so no one else in the future can hack it and do real damage instead of just warning

still sucks though, it's not excuse, even if they claim to do it to help the community..

hopefully, this kind of hackers don't delete anything, they only hide and manipulate some forum features until the admin do what they ask for or something like that

It happened around 5:30-6:00p.m MT. At first, you couldn't click on any topics, then all of a sudden the main page had only one topic and it was like "You've b33n h4cked by the b00n brothers!" It scared the crap out of me cuz I thought my computer was being hacked, so I got off really quick.

I had no idea what happened until I got an e-mail saying the site was hacked, apparently from the hackers who sent it from the admin controls.  I went on their site and they are all ranting and raving on what a great job they did and some idiot did post on there to try to hack this site and a few other GNR forums.  Some people just have WAY too much free time. :no:

the whole forum is down now. what kinda damage can they really be doing? does madison or the admins know by now?

There were indications that someone was trying to "hack" the forum via an exploit.
Didn't think much of it then since the forum was getting updated fairly regularly and invision seemed pretty secure.

If these people hacked the site, and there is a link to their website, and they are bragging about them doing so, then why cant someone report them and they get into trouble?? Last I checked hacking was against the law, and if these people are admitting to doing it, and have their own site, then cant they get into trouble if they are reported?

Well I still think it's pretty funny that the mygnr members are making a mess of the hackers forum now spamming it up with messages. ?MYGnr has like 24000 members so I guess it was pretty stupid to send an email to every member showing where to go to post. ?I checked the domain registration for their site and they have it protected, of course so I guess there really isn't much that can be done. ?They are probably a bunch of 13 year olds anyway.

Not particularly, no ther leaks originally came from my forum (that is now GunsReincarnated (http://www.GunsReincarnate.bbfun.com) ) in the guests section and ofcourse GG's forum. Mygnr mods would delete the threads remember??? but they were already posted on other forums before, son.

I didnt find this in the least bit funny.  They hacked my business computer and wiped all my customer records.  I've now got to get the memory recovered.  I've been quoted over two grand, I therefore do NOT get the joke!

A number of people got that email. These Boons Brothers people have a forum where a lot of mygnr people are on now. I dunno why some got this email and others didn't though. I didn't.

There was, in fact, a noob posting threads in random sections on the forum. Lots of numbers and something that looked like IP-adresses. JDRM here pointed out that he tried to hack something.

I like both the sites equally.  I read on the hacker forum that it was one member there that hacked the site because the person who owns that forum was getting annoyed that his site was getting spammed by MyGnR members cursing them out.  Aww, too bad for the lowly hackers!  I think every member should register there now and make a mess of HIS site! ;)

We are working to bring the forum back up. It's just taking time - there was more damage done than the hackers led people to believe.

It's been interesting to read the responses on the different forums to what happened. ?
It's very cool to hear words of support from both mygnrforum members and non-members who understand how wrong it is for hackers to bring down a forum - especially in the GNR community.

Whenever another forum in the GNR community has been hacked in the past, we've always sympathized and offered to help them get back up. Anybody who has spent years building a forum and supporting a band that we all love doesn't deserve to have some juvenile hacker ruin it all for everyone just for kicks. ?And for those of you who can't understand this - then I can't explain it to you.

Anybody who supports or encourages hackers clearly doesn't care about the GNR community - they just care about themselves and their own little site. ?And that's not how a real community operates. ?It's been an eye-opener to read some of the boards - and see who the real fans are. ?

Thanks again to the large majority of Gunners out there who have sympathized with us and encouraged us to get back up.

back in 2002 when www.chinesedemocracy.com brought down, mygnr took advantage to promote its own forum, and didnt sympathize, so why shoud we sympathize with you.

There's nothing fun about getting your work ruined. Either by hackers or because of things like hardware failure.

Some of you might not like the place in question, but you can't argue that the people who run the forum do so because they happen to be fans of the same band as most of us here.

I do totally agree...and brody (the admin @ the site i mod on) has been making sure that his forum is updated fully, I don't support or encourage the hackers and hope the MyGnRers ccan get back to the site they love....hell I go there too from time to time and mygnr has saved me in the past when htgth has been down...but i still think it was a bit amusing...no offense Madison but if this place got hacked then you'd prolly have a bit of a laugh if Jarmo's account was deleted.

this might be disrespectfull, but I dont think much effort went into that forum.
it stayed egzactly the same for the past 4 years, and even the look has been a default, it's always been full of ads, mods dont seem to be doing anything.
not to mention the index page of the mygnr.com .a blind guy would have done a better job at designing websites.

I'd have compasion for every GNR fan forum out there, but not mygnr.

When it appeared that htgth was hacked last year (when words were replaced by gangsta words), I wrote long posts on our forum explaining how lame and disgraceful I thought the hackers were. ?I totally ripped into them because I know how much time and trouble it takes to keep a large forum up and running. ?And for somebody to come along and just randomly hack it for laughs is just wrong. ?Now, it turned out that it wasn't hackers in htgth's case last year -- but I wrote the posts when I thought that it was.

Even when splat's forum was hacked, I sympathized. While it's not my number-one site, I totally spoke out against the hackers and asked Gigger if there was anything we could do to help them get back up. ?

We're a community, and that's how a community responds.

The hackers on that forum are honest, they admitted everything they did. Nothing has been deleted, it was not by any means a serious hack. They could have deleted the forum if they had wanted to. Instead of everyone criticizing them you really should be thankful they had some shred of decency not to go that far - they could have done a lot worse.

The problem is there is a very public exploit in that particular Invision software and because it was not upgraded it meant the security was nonexistant. It was a matter of time until someone hacked it.

eric posted it in the shoutbox on the boon brother site and the fucker that did it admited to making the script so it wasn't a? real hack just a script, thats how they couldn't do any damage, they're amatures

Umm, the NORMAL thing to do would be to INFORM the site that it was vulnerable. ?Not hack it and then laugh about it all over some 13 year old's hacker forum. ?There is no justification for that.

Their motive was to expose the fact that Eric has been misleading people - according to them, mind you. I don't want to upset MyGNRForum people by saying anything, I'm just repeating what they are saying on the Boon Brothers site. According to them, Eric hasn't been updating the software as he should - it wasn't to alert him that the software needs updating, it was more to "teach him a lesson."

I didn't say I think what they did was right, I just think you people should be thankful more damage wasn't done. EVERYTHING could have been easily deleted.

The problem according to Boon Bros. is that Eric has been telling people he uses all the money he intakes for the site and isn't honest about what he's really using it for. They also said no server costs as much as he's making per month and that he's pocketing tons of donation money that is meant to go towards the forum.

Again, let me reiterate: I am just repeating what people there are saying. I don't want MyGNR fans to attack me for putting this out there.

This sounds like the same ridiculous - and untrue - rant that a certain person on another site has been trying to claim for years. the site now says it'll be back monday the 25th of june but isn't the 25th sunday?
and they only hid stuff and deleted madisons account, no other passswords were taken or deleted. and admin has a function to send an email to all members so they used that and couldn't see our emails etc.
i dunno why its taking this long to fix though, i really miss that place, despite how people hate it, we're just gnr fans like you who want to use our message board, not our fault if people hate the admin

Actually it should have only taken him a couple minutes. No one on Boon Bros. knows what's taking so long. They hacked a Harry Potter forum last night the same way as they hacked MyGNR and the Harry Potter one was online about three minutes afterwards.

Maybe Eric just hasn't had time to actually start yet, who knows? Just have a little patience, yeah.

No. They're amateurs. They only "hacked" MyGNR using a popular exploit in the software version.

Forum update:

The mygnrforum.com indeed got hacked on June 23rd 2006. The hackers did mes up data. They used the feature to send an e-mail to some members mentioning the the Forum (not their computer) got hacked.

I do have a backup (wich is a couple of days old). Restoring a backup would normally be fast and simple with a small Forum. This is not the case with a big Forum like mygnrforum.com. Plus I've run into a few technical difficulties and have had to rely on the host which takes 4-8 hours to answer/give help.

A few posts will be gone, a few members will have to re-register. No need to panic, I'll post all those details when the forum is back up.

In a few days, weeks, months, we'll simply look back at this as an "incident".

I do expect mygnrforum to be back online Monday June 26th 2006.

This is an unfortunate incident. Computer software get vulnerable from time to time. Security exploits are getting more and more common.

I encourage webmasters from all Forums to be on the lookout for security exploits. Would be cool if Forum members from all Forums would keep an eye on security patches and notify the Webmasters should danger be near.

i did hack(social) into facebook.com, it's an  interesting tutorial. that's it. did no harm to the person account and i'm not even loggin there anymore.

the guys who hacked mygnr did for fun and to make the admin aware of what he's doing.
it's like breaking in a bank safe and not stealing anything/
